Trucks used to be just reliable working vehicles. You can thank #ford for the shift from work vehicle to everyday vehicle(and being good at both).
This is my 1989 Ford #f150 XLT Lariat, 5-Speed, 4x4, with the revered 300 straight six engine. This is when #trucks began getting "comfort" options that people seem to think take the abilities of a truck away for some reason. Then again those same people saying that are kind of the reason the designers went that direction sooooooooooooo...

In my experiences old 300 ford L6 were not a joke, they went to crap in the early 80s, ditch the computer and the injection and drop in a 351,...an old 351!!! that shift knob is great!! ya fix it up, Austin !

My Dad had a 88 short bed Lariat identical color as that one. Same front viser too. 302 3.55 gears 4wd Bulldog with wrecker gear type shifting. Where it goes straight to 2nd then you gotta shake it loose for 3rd. Great truck and I have good memories of it. 55 cranking 3grand 😂. Also speaking of French cars my cousin bought a LeCar 2dr from my aunt's new husband back in the 90s. A deer jumped out in front of them and they swerved and it rolled over on its side. So light they hoped out and flipped it back over and took off again. True stories. 😎🏁🤘

As someone who dailied a 62 falcon with an inline 6 and an 85 towncar with throttle body injected 5.0 they go in and out of making them well vs meeting regulations. All my 96 to 2000 fords were reliable but rusted. The 62 falcon was the smaller straight 6, 2 speed auto converted to cable choke. Ridiculously reliable, however the 85 town car was over engineered float boat, those early efi did not age well. Before those two I had a 2000 mustang convertible v6 auto, lots of little issues and headaches but scored it for 200 and kept it alive for 2000 for 4 years. Now I have two 96 miatas, one turbo and standalone, one stock-ish. Stock ecu is like a set it and forget it thing barely ever an issue, and so easy to diagnose with the scan tool and the diagnostic box under the hood.

Man oh man, the original owners must have been rough on that thing. I bought an 86 F250 as my first vehicle out of a grocery store parking lot almost 11 years ago for 900 bucks and never had anything close to that kind of a list. I've done a lot to it trying to improve it and make it a nicer truck to drive but I've never had a major failure of anything or even ever been left stranded with it, and I drove it every single day the first 5 years I had it and 2-4 times a week since. Not to mention how many times I've had the bump stops resting on the axle tubes, and how many times the factory tach has seen the end of its travel. LOL

It's 33 years old, you need to expect problems. Thing is, outside the fuel pumps and synchronizer, none of the problems kept you from getting home. They just keep plugging away with minimal maintenance costs. At my last job an 86 with a 302 and 4 speed took a wheel bearing, a battery, and tires in 4 years of daily use pulling water wagons in winter and 4 wheelers in summer. Often overloaded with fence posts and wire. Find the heater core and guess at how long a fix it will be. I think today someone holds up a heater core and tells the engineers build me a car around this part.

A lariat is a rope used as a lasso. Wonder Woman carries a lariat of truth! Seriously, guys??? I thought I taught you better than that!!! Ford made F150 Lariats starting in 1980-through the decade. They were the first trucks of its kind that weight and rust were part of the consideration in the design. It's why they became the "fleet" truck of business. Lighter trucks meant better gas mileage and yet they were STILL the best trucks for towing and hauling. Coming out of the 1970's gas crisis, the design had to become sleeker, lighter in weight, get better gas mileage, and yet still be able to hold up to its reputation as the best WORK horse on the road. Until the mid-2000's when Dodge/Chrysler redesigned the Ram1500, the Ford F150 held the position as the nation's number one work/business fleet truck. That title now belongs to Ram1500. Do some research!! Love you guys!!! #oneproudmom www.drivingline.com/articles/the-1980-1986-ford-f-150-is-an-overlooked-generation-of-classic-pickup-trucks/
