From a 2008 interview with Matt: “If I had to do it over again, I wouldn’t do the show at all. Honestly, the show really made me feel dumb. And I never felt like that before. I did it because I needed the money. I lived with my parents. I had just dropped out of law school. I was a regular pot smoker. I didn’t want to work. And after the show I got $100,000 and signed a development deal with Spike. I went to California, and I was supposed to do all this stuff, and I just didn’t do it. I was so embarrassed about the whole premise of the show that I never wanted people to think, ”Oh, here’s this guy who didn’t even know the show was about him. It’s a big joke, and now he’s some reality star trying to be a TV host.” So I holed up in an apartment in Santa Monica, and spent a lot of the money on marijuana and alcohol. I lived there with a girl who broke up with me. The next day I flushed a half ounce of pot down the toilet, packed my car, came home to Pittsburgh, and I got help. I haven’t done drugs or alcohol for four years. Now I’m married with a new baby and a stepson. I work at a logistics company. Were things different, I would much rather be working in the entertainment business. I just went about it the wrong way.”

That is both extremely depressing, and the most likely scenario. I feel very bad for the guy, he did not ask for this. And he expressed multiple times on the show that it no longer felt worth it. And unlike Jury Duty, the joke in this show really was on him. He was always put in the worst position, and made to look as bad as possible.

five years later In January 2013, matt stated in a new interview released the day of the premiere of the show's third season that he had "come full circle" and had made peace with the experience. He noted that he still hears from fans of the show on Facebook, that in nine years, no one has ever said anything negative to him about it, and that the fear he felt about what people would think of him was "...something I drummed up in my head."

Matt was actually smart keeping the Hutch around. I'm assuming, like Survivor, everyone votes for the winner at the end. If you are seated next to someone who is a jerk, it'll make you seem like a saint and everyone will vote for you. That's probably why there was so much time between seasons and they didn't make many of them. If it's not fresh in people's minds, they're less likely to assume it's fake. Plus this was the first time there was a fake reality show so why would a contestant think it's fake? If it was a common concept, everyone on every reality show would probably have their guard up because then they know it's a real possibility they're the fool on a fake show.

Though The Joe Schmo show took a toll on Matt Gould, it shaped his life experience. In a 2013 interview with the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, he said that the show had made him feel insecure. For years, he thought that people looked at him as the but of a joke. However, he also said that “no one has ever once in nine-plus years said something negative to [him] about it.” Once he realized that viewers had truly liked him, he came to terms with his time on the show. When he re-watched his season, he said he was proud of how the show portrayed him. His kindness and generosity paid off in the long run. He advises future “Joe Schmos” to take the show in stride and laugh about it if they can. guess he's ok now? 😄

@@PolarBearProblems it's not like he didn't know he was filmed. He signed up for a reality TV show and that's exactly what he got, except for the twist, that he was destined to win. Being naked in front of your class is not a good allegory to having fun for a week with people who are paid to hang out with you. It's not even something you can make fun of him for. The opposite is the case. He didn't became a laughing stock, but he became THE man. But drugs sadly distorted his perception of reality.

I just read the post mortem of Sgt. Maj. Franklin D. Jones (actor of Earl) and it made me so sad. He was a real life, highly decorated marine veteran with 28 years of service honored with two Purple Hearts, The Cross of Gallantry with a Silver Star and two Presidential Citations. He subcame to cancer and the long time effects of Agent Orange. Asides of that he was a family man with 5 kids and 9 grandchildren. Not to be that person...but you're definitely contributing to it being done again by watching this far into the series. They see how many views this content is getting on the socials, and that's part of why they're rebooting. So...I respect that you have a belief about it, but live your belief, please. I take care of r_ape and child victims for a living, so to me, this isn't psychological abuse. It's tough stuff and the person should definitely have a good therapist, but if you really want to talk abuse, talk about what the"bunnies" in the "mansion" they mention have gone through. Talk about the objectification and gaslighting it takes for the women they used throughout the show as sexobjects to get to that point in their lives where they're just a body to someone, to where their entire LIFE becomes a lie, permanently. Talk about the life expectancy of p_orn actresses. This? This could have gone bad or good, either way, in the end, depending very much on the psych profile you start with. Some people would choose this for themselves just to see how they would react, or even just because life already seems like a joke in so many ways. This guy was in a place of discouragement in his life when they picked him, already--he probably wasn't the best person to be picked for this, and the fact that they pushed him into morally questionable actions wasn't healthy for his resilience. Coulda been done differently. Morally questionable show, for sure. Could be dangerous for the wrong person, but so can being a "bunny," and no one seems to give two shakes about that. This, abuse? Come on. That's kind of a place of privilege to come from, really.

Imagine one of these shows but the person they are supposedly pranking is actually in on it and it's someone from the cast that's getting pranked. Basically that person is the only one that doesn't know that the new Jordan/Matt is actually in on it. I mean that would be very complicated and way too far but just imagine. Thinking you're the one playing the trick on someone and then you actually turn out to be the "target"

None of us can imagine what this is like. I really just hope the "contestants" come out okay after it all. Like, after this show, how would not question everything in life. They surely came across other points in life and just couldn't believe it was real. It'd be like psychosis and PTSD combined. You couldn't trust everyone the same as you did before. It would always seem like people around you are just faking their emotions toward you. Everything would feel like a simulation. Even if you know damn well it's real, there's going to be a thought in the back of your head saying, "but there's a chance it's not real, right?" Then on top of that just like other PTSD and Psychosis sufferers... if you did drugs/psychedelics on top of this you'd freak the hell out for damn sure.

What do you even mean? This wasn't that long ago, and even long before this, it has been recorded in history as most of civilization being "male-dominated" society. And how does one simply stating that make them woke? everyone is aware of that already. Can you even describe what it means to be woke, or what some qualifying characteristics are of being woke? I used to think I was woke, but the longer I live the more I see people like you saying things like what you have said here. Call me dead asleep then, I don't want to be part of that stupidity .

There was another similar show that you should react to from the same time period. Basically the “reality show” was that this woman had to convince her family that she was engaged and getting married to this guy who was an absolute doofus. For a large sum of money, they had to go a week with her family and get through the wedding ceremony without anyone objecting. However everyone was an actor except for the woman and her family, including her supposed fiancée and his family. I think it was called “My Big Obnoxious Fiancé”

I had to look up matt to understand where he was in 2023,what i ended up finding is both sad then great, after the show he seemed like he did try to get into the business industry but failed several times,he was embarrassed and had regrets about the show and at some point his relationships didn't work and he became depressed,he hid in his apartment doing drugs and Marijuana spending his money mostly on those 2,after a bit it seems like he grew to terms with himself and stopped his addiction and finally understood that most viewers liked him,he thought he was the joke so seeing people like him helped him, after he came to terms with the show,it seems now hes married and has kids,he lives a more private life it seems now,not sure how accurate this is but this is most of the information i found on him

Ralph is actually my favorite from the show. Not because of the show, but he's a podcast host with Kevin Smith where they breakdown Hollywood news. He is the person who spearheaded Adam West getting his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame, he is an AMAZING impressionist, and talks about this show a ton on the podcast. He really loved and respected Matt, but, he is kind of a tool so you were right there lol.

I'm kind of confused. How were they supposed to insert the kissing scene in the "show" without any premise? Like was it supposed to be a challenge or punishment? Also, really cruel of the show for offering Matt to eat shit. That's completely different from the rest of the extreme foods. That should have been either make everyone eat shit or make everyone eat extreme dish.
