I honestly wish they didn’t do this in movies. Adding in scenes into movies where a black person is able to tell off a white person in the Jim Crowe south and during the upset of civil rights movement because it really downplays the horrors of black people and our ancestors went through, I used to feel differently until I watched The Help with my Great Grandmother is 99 as of last month and got upset and told me that they shouldn’t put these ideas into young people’s head that we were allowed to talk like that and do that at the time and told me a story of her neighbor getting shot in his front yard by a white man for just scolding his child at the store who grabbed a toy away from one of the black boys and took it. The man came and shot him in front of his wife and kids and then went to his truck and drive home and waited on his porch for the cops who he told what happened and then went inside and ate dinner with his family and the cop left. Nothing happened to the man. This was 1964, in a Jackson Mississippi, where The Help takes place. She said such scenes makes it look like we could’ve done something and just didn’t when we literally couldn’t. We could get killed in the middle of the town square by a white person for just offending them somehow and then get our home burnt down afterwards, they could get you fired and not hired anywhere, they could get your children expelled from the black school, they could take EVERYTHING and then your life from you with no repercussions just for uttering something or looking at them in a way they found offensive. Which is why I no longer argue with it. I hate these cheesy “white savior” movies and I hate when it’s shown this black person was allowed to do anything they wished and anything they wanted and wouldn’t get punished severely. If they’re going to continue making these black trauma movies then they should be brutally honest with them and how white ppl acted. VERY few people were “white saviors” and the honest truth is, if things didn’t change, many ppl today would be exactly the same way even though they pretend they wouldn’t. They’d be just like white people back then. Because those ppl grew up being taught that hate, you wouldn’t know any better either if you lived back then. So I agree with my greatgrandmother said; they need to stop showing scenes that wouldn’t have happened and they need to stop with the white savior bullshit and show the truth. Shoe the ugly truth of what would’ve happened if 3 black women did that, whether they worked for NASA or not.

@@Plumyboi This man wasn't nice, and most definitely racist. In this scene when he changed his tune he viewed them as tokens, the exception and not the rule. If I'm to be frank it is more than like they would have be beaten and killed. In his racist mind they were being "uppity" from the moment they existed in his presence and even more so for "speaking out of turn". Well if they were men instead of women that also would have increased their chances of being killed just a bit more. This is a great movie but it also was soft on some of the racism and the violence that comes with it.

@@Ren-cp3tnbeaten and killed is a stretch for the late 60s that’s more of a 30s and before thing although it did still happen in then it wouldn’t be likely and definitely not from a police officer as by that time they were actively trying to prevent those types of lynchings

@@Plumyboiexactly. I’ve learned that too many people give up being in the conversation. You don’t change peoples minds by being hateful in return. Fight your fight but know there are other ways to get what you want. He respected them at the end. Doesn’t matter if he respected ONLY them, something has changed. Perhaps in the next black person he meets he will be more engaged in the conversation rather that rule them all out because of his experience. . And on and on the next generation goes with a change in perspective. That’s how we got to where we are today save for those who want to continue in hatred and victimisation.

I remember on one hectic day, I was helping one of my assistants to train this new worker. And that new worker said to me “No, I don’t want you to train me, I want your boss” with the most annoying face I ever seen. Surprised but still try to be polite, I asked “which one?” He said “one of those white guys” I wasn’t in the mood to argue with some assh*le, so I just called one of ‘white guy’ to train him. Later on, that new employee came to me with a big smile on his face and said to me “I’m so sorry with my attitude before. I didn’t know that you are the boss” 🙄 That guy was Asian, and FYI I’m also Asian. To be honest at work I received racism most of time from my fellow Asian. Everytime we train new workers, the Asian one will asking for “the white boss” to train them. But after they find out that I’m the boss, they will put the biggest smile I ever seen. Ironic. 😴

The fact that they took so long to tell this historical event was insane to me. This movie was amazing. The black women at NAsa at this time were truly phenomenal and the ones who didn't see them for their blackness knew their worth. They were self taught to an extent and smarter than the men with masters and engineering degrees.
