``Skellies (...) they have most unsettling voice lines`` It feels a bit like zombies from "Return of the Living Dead" series, like they vocalize the pain of being dead, you know they feel their body rotting.
"Flesh creatures..." "So cold..." "Who goes there...?" Being able to take down those bastards rather easily never detracted from them scaring the shit out of me the first time I played it, and it showcases how They Hunger builds up its atmosphere well to compensate for its weaker parts in a way that is completely memorable, at the very least
Every time I hear those lines from the skeletons I get that nostalgia feeling, it takes me back to those days I played They Hunger for the first time, when I was 13 yo. This mod never gets old, some parts are a little amusing to replay, specially on the first episode, but it always ends up building the atmosphere again. The third episode was too short tho. Everything was so new, detailed and interesting that it always happens when I play it I have that feeling of wanting moar lol.
I think to rub it in, every map should end with you coming out of the sewer to get the map exit, then the next map should always start with a small section before going back into the sewer.
"You just dun commited suicide, boy." I'll never forget that voice line. It's so good. . . Thanks for hitting the nostalgia chords, I've not thought about this mod in decades.
Luke Fle by ending”s”, I mean having to fly the helicopter around the prison watchtower (which I thought was the final boss fight) and _then_ you have to fight the zombie sheriff heli a heli, which I thought was complete bullshit.
Mial isus Don’t forget how the heli you’re in is constantly moving around, shifting your gun’s aim... meanwhile, the zombie sheriff is a deadeye shot! Fun!
@@TheRealNormanBates I didn't care much about the helicopter fight. Sure, it's hard as fuck, and if you didn't prepare for it beforehand most likely you'll never have enough ammo or health lol. But I enjoyed it as a 'true final boss fight'. It also puts an end to the whole story, killing Franklin once and for all, and the sheriff zombie too.
Alfred was the scariest part of the mod for me: Countless minutes of terrible voiceacting and this cutscene when he's walking down the corridor to put his shoes on and then proceeds back to the opposite part of it, while enjoying not sparing me of his talkativeness. Good thing you can kill him later.
@@bazooka93 Same lol. I've been measuring how much I've improved my English over the years by replaying They Hunger and understanding the voice logs more each time.
If you're looking for more spooky style mods to try, I'd recommend checking out "Underhell" or "Nightmare House 2" which are both fantastic Source mods! Especially Underhell if you're looking for a good mod with a long story and variety in gameplay.
@@IINareik Cry of Fear is the most Marmite of the Half-Life mods. You'll either love it or absolutely loathe it. The limited inventory space, ability to get lost easily and the sheer amount of "hey, screw you player" moments can put people off. Also, the game ends with the "it's all in your head, Luigi" which is just a lazy ending.
@@IINareik Even in Silent Hill you had a bloody map and enemies that weren't strategically placed to deliberately screw the player. Cry of Fear has some potential, as long as you can forgive the rather poor voice acting and cheesy writing, but it's deliberately made to infuriate the player.
if you're looking for some spooki mods for October, may i recommend Estranged act 1 and 2? its a half life 2 mod on steam- with really good voice acting too! when it comes to it's horror, its rather tame, about as spooky as this mod is, but its still a pretty high-quality mod i'd reccomend you play. also, while this isn't really horror focused, I would HIGHLY recommend Entropy Zero. it's the closest thing we got to an opposing force expansion pack for HL2. its *really* good. Edit: ok. just found out that estranged Act 2 isn't actually an HL2 mod, but it is a direct continuation of Act 1 which is an hl2 mod, they're both free for the time being but Act 2 will be charged for a sum of money once its completed, as its still in early access.
That disappearing bullsquid reminds me of probably the most entertaining experience I had in Doom Eternal. I was fighting through the Slayer Gate that first has the Tyrants while in a Discord voice chat with a friend and hopped up on bloodlust. Got different Glory Kills on the two tyrants and started bitching about how disappointing the kills were and moved on to the cunt on a rocket sled and.....he was just gone. To this day I believe that Doom Eternal was somehow tied into my microphone and the rocket sled demon just said "This guy's a certifiable PSYCHOPATH! I'm out."
I'm pretty sure using the HD Model pack for They Hunger messes the mod up, I very recently played this with vanilla skins and I had none of the weird glitches you had like the disappearing bullsquid, standing electrified scientist, missing crosshairs etc.
I'm sure the HD Model pack makes the game unplayable at some point. It happened to me years ago and I doubt it's fixed in the moddb page. I'd advise not to install that pack, and besides, some vanilla models are pretty cool in episodes 2 and 3, it's not that bad.
Postal 2's "Eternal Damnation" might be a suitably spooky mod to showcase...even today, after all these years and with a more jaundiced eye, there are a few sections that are still impressively atmospheric. It also still has one of the best architectural sections of a sewer level I've ever seen. That isn't saying a lot, granted, and it's not even the WHOLE level, but it's still pretty nifty.
Man, you should play it with almost original fov. If your screen's ratio is 16:9 aspect screen. You should use command default_fov 105. To have it permanently, you can simply add "default_fov 105" to autoexec.cfg file which is in half life folder (named as valve). It also should apply it all hl mods and expension packs. Just a suggestion. It helps a lot and gives better fov and model view. I wish Valve was giving info about this to players. Nice video, They Hunger is beautiful.
That bullsquid wasn't supposed to stop, it's actually just supposed to run up the stairs and disappear. You're actually playing the slightly more dated individual versions as opposed to the all in one versions so some bugs are probably left from release.
It's obvious mods like this were made with much care from the authors. Sometimes actual horror games have to sell woo woo spooky and jumpscares just to sell more, because their objective is to sell, not the case with mods.
@@MrTurcosOtomanos Yeah, I'd take a flawed mod with a lot of obvious care shown for it over a professionally-produced yet utterly forgettable game any day.
@@IsmailofeRegime idk if that was sarcastic. But you know, with mods like this you can have a great time. And they're not long enough to get you bored, unless they try to be hard lol. Anyways, a nice way to put some extra hours on professionally-produced games.
@@MrTurcosOtomanos It isn't sarcastic, I'm serious. There are lots of obscure mods for Half-Life that I still remember due to how creative they were, whereas there's a lot of professionally-made modern games that people forget about after a year or two. Obviously this doesn't mean every professionally-produced game sucks, or that every mod is memorable, just saying.
@@IsmailofeRegime Oh I see. Lol my bad. I still replay some mods out of nostalgia. They Hunger was one of my favorites. And currently I'm getting my hands in Afraid of Monsters. So many years later I've decided to finally play that one. Could you recommend some?
I wish the They Hunger series came without any character models from Half-Life and ideally also had other HUD design and sounds to cut out any Half-Life feeling which interferes with the atmosphere of a horror/zombie story.
I think you got the plot assessment a bit off. The Doctor did NOT make the zombies, since the poor exposition guy states "Dr. Franklin, he's not an evil man, he was just trying to figure out what was making all the zombies.."
you know not one picture you saw on the stairs. for your knowledge it is a picture of king al fateh which is the king of islam. and the question and content you need to make is why there is 1 picture of King Al Fateh on the stairs? (at 5:03)
Hey Icarus, do a doom mod madness on project horror, it's a mod that turns doom into a horror game with some serious overhaul of the atmosphere, difficulty and gameplay. Awesome for spooktober :D
Chonkers = "Zorks" and Skelly Boys = "Kellies." There were Kellies in TH1 to0 also as well if I recall a go go. This story supposed takes place in the late 1950s (or a hybrid of the '50s and the '80s since it's mostly inspired by '80s horror flicks), so why is there a TEC-9? Those things are ghetto trash anyway. And why'd they change the "hunting rifle" to a G36? You're playing the OG version, which was my first experience, but I also remember when they first replaced that rifle with a G36. I knew right away that they only did it because everyone thinks the G36 just plain looks cool. Who would use 5-round mags in a G36? No matter which version, the hunting rifle fires full-auto when not aiming and semi-auto while aiming (kinda like Dahl weapons in Borderlands 2). So why 5-round mags? Personally, I think they should have based it on the M40A from Opposing Force and reskinned it to have a rustic wood stock. A bolt-action rifle fits the setting better anyway.
I've finally played the actual mod after all this time. What I didn't realize was just how bad the level design is in it. There are plenty of times where you just kinda have to guess where to go. Like when you enter the asylum. HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT THE RANDOM ASS PARK TABLE WAS MOVABLE AND I HAD TO USE IT TO JUMP OVER A GATE?! If I had found that on my own I would have assumed that I found a bug and kept looking.
I'm becoming highly frustrated seeing you waste so many bullets. Why were you shooting zombies anywhere but the head early on in the police station? They die so damn quickly if you aim for the head. Were you actually not using a reticle? I can't see one on screen... though I can see what seems to be a laser sight when using the shotgun of all things.
