They painted my boat and I painted their wall?!

My 42ft narrowboat, Naughty Lass, is ready to leave the dry dock - after a 3 stage epoxy blacking and me painting the boat's name on the walls. The owners of the Northwich Drydock Co. then let the water back in, refloating the boats in the dock, and helping us all through the lock. After mooring up back at Hunt's Island they even invite us for a drink by the fire where I meet the landlord of a previous pub of the week.
Filmed on iPhone 12 Pro Max and GoPro 4, 7 & 9 edited using LumaTouch on iPad Pro. All drone footage filmed by Garry Deavall from A1 Drones.

Some interesting info there Robbie about dry docks etc. I’m always surprised how long ago the canals were built, and the amazing infrastructure put in place to support this new transport system. It’s a credit to British ingenuity, financial acumen, and the hard yakker of the men and women who built them. Perfect Pub of the Week!

Hello! Just wanted to say that I've been marathoning your 'Canal Boat Diaries' series and just discovered your RU-vid channel as well and you've brought me so much joy over the last week, living vicariously through you. I'm all the way over in America (Atlanta, GA), so I've never even been to the UK before (well, properly -- I did have a short layover in Gatwick Airport on the way to Italy once!), though I do hope to get over there at some point, if all goes to plan. Anyway, it's been so lovely seeing the country through your eyes. And I look forward to seeing more. (Oh, and I joined your Patreon -- I can only manage the $5.00 tier at the moment, but I definitely wanted to give something back)

Back in the 1730s where the dry dock is now was the main course of the river. The first lock on the present site was built in the 1840s and the largest lock, which was built to take a steam flat towing up to 3 dumb flats, opened in 1888. Seagoing ships didn't arrive until after WW2.
@RobbieCumming

Hello Colin! 👋 So they didn’t think about seagoing boats at all when they added the lock?

The idea of bringing sea going ships as far as Winsford was a WW2 proposal, with 150 ton barges continuing to Nantwich and 100 tonners nearly to Wolverhampton. This was intended to reduce the loads carried on the railways.

Interesting to see the two pack being applied using a aluminium based primer coat, I always thought the shell had to be blasted to bare metal to apply two pack... will be looking into that further! Be interested to see the Naughty Lass get a new paint job this year (maybe for a 3rd series of CBD?)
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 3 года назад

@WingingItBoatingonaBudget
@WingingItBoatingonaBudget 3 года назад
@@RobbieCumming yeah. Guessing the alu paint works 'magic'.. we want to two pack ours next year - but part of the reason is we want the whole hull shot blasting to remove 40 plus years of paint... (Easier than sanding it off!). When I painted Nuts n Volts last year total cost was less than 300 quid... BUT it did take me a MONTH working on it full time to do it.... And yes it's not quite a 'professional paint job' but from a distance, in the dark with sunglasses on it looks ok! 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe the BBC would fund a CBD 'special' of renovating a narrowboat... 🤔 Oh and if they do I can highly recommend someone as your 'assistant' for doing the graft on the series... Hi Robbie I think you mean 'seagoing' rather than 'seafaring' which refers more to people. Is it rude to ask how much the treating and blacking cost? Normally, the boat would be taken back to shiny metal before a 2 coat epoxy blacking. I assume that the aluminium primer means that this is not necessary. Jeff

What about the bottom. No one ever shows the bottom being done. Or is it???

Also my question on here never seems to be shown on any other video and that part MUST RUST SURELY?
@raysmith6891
@raysmith6891 3 года назад
Very seldom gets done as it is constantly underwater so shouldn’t rust and any blacking gets rubbed off on canal bottom as they’re not very deep at all.
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 3 года назад
Easy everyone yes I got it done i showed clips of the finished keel so you can see I just couldn’t film baseplate being painted as wasn’t there when it was being done

@@raysmith6891 The question of whether to protect the bottom must be raised as often as which toilet system to use. The majority seem to me to advocate not doing it to save time, pain(t), money, craning, injury. However, when I get moving about in the boat in the morning I hear an initial gloop-glooping of bubbles disturbed from the hull, so I know that there is either electrolytic corrosion going on or oxygen appearing from life underwater all the time. And oxygen means corrosion. Canal Boat magazine has an article on steels, rust and protection (May & June 2021).

Robbie nice paint Job BUT what happens to the flat part right underneath you know at the bottom that one cant see.Is this also painted the same way as the sides that are under water? Sorry if its a silly question BUT whenever other RU-vidrs film their Blacking including that David chap (Cruising the Cut)they never show the flat bottom section getting any attention OR paint. thank you and ATB Mike Skegness

The reason you don’t see that is because it’s such a messy job and usually a bery tight squeeze to get underneath. Matt painted the baseplate with one coat of the epoxy (step 2) - no primer or glossy show coat needed of course as it’s permanently underwater.

Pub reopening. Has anyone lasted longer than 9pm? I haven't. Sitting and not moving, drinking cold liquids. Not good. I am yearning for inside drinking.
