quick question about my 93 Corolla Jim. when I turn the ac on it lowers the rpms down to almost a stalling point but it doesn't ever stall. when driving, it doesn't seem to affect the rpms. only when stopped does it bog down. any ideas? thanks
This is very common on Toyotas from 1990-2006, most likely your throttle body (and butterfly plate) are very dirty or your IAC (Idle air control valve) is stuck. Clean both of them with throttle body cleaner, the throttle body is easy to clean with a rag but the IAC is located just underneath it and requires removal of two screws to clean the little half-moon inside it. Both of these parts control the intake of air and idle control so when they get gunked up with carbon they don't allow proper airflow into the motor and it begins to dip in idle which is made worse by adding a load (such as AC).
It never ceases to amaze me how bad the layman DIYer can fuck up their own car by trying to add fluids to the wrong hole. It clearly has visual ques all over the engine bay denoting where each fluid type goes. Must have been a Obiden voter and probably never stopped wearing masks and is on their 6th booster shot.
