Amazing students and school! Kudo's to all the dedicated teachers commited to passing on their love and knowledge of Jazz. Check out the "Moanin, Folsom Middle School Jazz, 2013" band ensemble, 7th and 8th graders.

Zeplin is cool, but I'm glad they were able to help him see other things. It's hard when you're in high school b/c your taste is very fixed. I remember thinking that Ellington and Basie weren't all that. I've grown up since then. =)

Texas has a thing for raising amazing jazz musicians. That said, come to Seattle. Growing up in NYC and learning jazz (struggling to learn jazz, more like it) I heard about Essentially Ellington and thought--okay, whatever. Moved to Seattle and they grow jazz musicians differently out here. It's ain't choppy mc chop fest all day long with the high school players here, these cats play with more maturity than guys twice their age who frequented the top jam sessions in NYC (I watched, didn't dare play)
