I remember watching this episode when it came out in the 60's. It bothered me that the Professor didn't notice the shoreline of the lagoon 'not' flooding, but placed all of his focus on that one goofy bamboo stick in the water. Oh well, to much skeptical thinking when I was 8

Same. Why was the tide line still the same? I guess we now know that, without the sinking stick, there's have been no Gilligan goof. And therefore, no episode.. Still love Mr. Howell buffing the grass blades. Over the decades, when sweating it out on my own lawn in summer, I sometimes wish I can have a lawn and helpmate like Mr. Howell had! With a sip of Mint Julip after every blade cut.

Reminds me of a scene from the probably not so well known movie FM, where the new guy in charge wants to add more commercials and the head DJ just says to him, heck we could just get rid of ALL the music and play nothing but commercials to which the guy just smiled and said something like great idea!!!! And of course Demolition Man where they play nothing but commercials and even do requests for the "oldies"! GEEZ........

Yes, it is called an epilogue and it is almost a staple in TV shows. However, the plot does always seem to end before it. It is like a tidy little ribbon they attach to the end of each episode.

Yes-some examples of scenes that were cut in the past were in the musical episodes of “I Love Lucy” such as in “The Operetta” where Fred (William Frawley) has his song about having his “Inn on the river Out”, and also in the dream episode “Lucy Goes to Scotland” which sometimes would cut the bit where the professional sword dancers are demonstrating their tradition followed by the physical comedy of Lucy attempting to prove she could also do it. When I was a teenager interested in film I actually applied for work at WPIX in NYC and was shown by a few editors how different lines or entire scenes would be trimmed or cut completely from several sitcoms airing at the time including “Gilligan’s Island”, “I Dream of Jeannie” and “Get Smart” among others. Also, generally the first season episodes were rarely if ever shown due to the fact that they were filmed in black and white and not colorized at that time for tv. The editors at the tv station all agreed on one fact: you could pass an episode around to several editors and they would each have their own individual ideas about what lines or entire scenes should be cut!

Gilligan's Island is huge globally except in the UK where only a small number of episodes were shown in 1966 in some local ITV regions on random weeks on a Thursday, then it was never shown again. YUP I grew up in Louisville, KY and in the early-mid 1970's we got an independent UHF station WDRB-41 and aired this uncut in order among other great shows I''d watch after school each weekday (Lost in Space, Voyage to the bottom of the Sea, Spider Man, Speed Racer, of course the loony toons including some pretty rare episodes you'll NEVER see again outside of maybe a DVD collection, Bullwinkle, Tennessee Tuxedo, and later on the 6 million dollar man, Bionic Woman and Battle of the Planets) I watched probably every episode of Gilligan's Island a couple times and I remember this scene very well, even as probably an 11 year old thinking of how absurd this was not just trimming but buffing the tip of each blade of grass! :D Every time I watch MeTV I it takes me back to those days!

I find network showings of GI harder to watch now because some of the funniest scenes that I love are deleted for re-formatting. Often I find scenes of the Howell’s are deleted and they’re some of the best and funniest scenes. The show is a delightful classic and the acting was excellent and very funny. However, I DID visit my mom and dad a few years ago and they were watching it on, I think, Nickelodeon. It was sped up (OK, at least no scenes omitted, so far as I could tell) but it was wall-to-wall commercials with a little bit of show thrown in!!! Incidentally, the premise of this episode is a good example of how Gilligan's Island encouraged the less than 10 year old me to think critically about science. I remember the first thing i thought was the Professor is full of BS, because were the island really sinking, the first thing everyone would notice is the beach shrinking due to the water covering it. But NO, the professor fixates on some stick he put in the water, and ignores all the other evidence.

Yep, Rick I've seen that scene before. I'm old school and watched Gilligan's Island from the start. I can most of the time recall from the edited versions of today that something is missing...but thanks

Nobody noticed that it was still the same distance to the lagoon. The professor messed up by only using a single data point.

Watched Gilligan’s Island after school through the 70’s on KPTV channel 12 broadcast from Portland, Oregon. I lived 70 miles away in a small timber town, so the antenna had to be in the right position.

I was a big fan as a kid. I even bought a long sleeve shirt with the white collar because I could look like Gilligan.

GI was on constant syndication by our local NBC affiliate after school at 3:30pm every day through the 1970's into the mid eighties. So yes, I seen them all, including this scene, a few times. I could quote every line of dialogue before it was spoken.

I watched every episode over and over back in the 70's when the stations just ran them uncut. I do indeed remember that scene. And like most Jim Backus scenes it was solid gold. They would run the monster movies straight from the can also. Sometimes letting us teenage boys have a peek at a little T&A. Being smart, boys back then kept our mouths shut and didn't tell our parents. This went on for around 3 years in the mid 70's after school Big Show, that only boys watched.

What they should have done is have the castaways get rescued right a way, (the glue syrup, made from sap worked) and got the "Minnow" back to Hawaii. Then, the skipper could have used the island, thus named "Gilligan"s Island" , as his new chartered destination. They could have had hundreds of guest stars as passengers and the show could have lasted more than ten years. The first five passengers would have been the stars of the show. They could have had jobs on the island. Each week, up to five guest passengers could have come to the island for a weekend get away. The show always begins and ends in Hawaii. Guest casts could have been any comic in Hollywood at that time.

Used to be able to notice when they cut out scenes from the original Star Trek from when it ran on NBC to when it was syndicated.

It’s so hilarious and unrealistic how Mrs. Howell has so many clothes. She’s wearing something new in practically every episode. How did she pack all those clothes? lol

I remember the scene from when I was a kid and remember how funny it was. I have a better one for you. When I was a kid watching the show the local affiliate of Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcast Network ran it and they censored an entire episode, the one where Ginger pretends to have psychic powers. When I finally saw it as an adult I sat there slack jawed because I never knew it existed.

Rick - Is it true that the cast of GI missed out on years and years of residuals even though the show has been on consistently for sixty years?
@ricknineg
@ricknineg Месяц назад
Mostly, yes. None signed residual paperwork, there’s debate about Dawn Wells yet she was hard on her luck and was asking for donations so even so it may not have been much. But Bill Frawley aka Fred Mertz from ILL is still getting residuals from the show….his estate is

@stuartm6069
@stuartm6069 Месяц назад
sadly true, Most of the actors in the sixties and into the seventies had contracts where they would only get residuals for the 1st three airings of an episode in reruns. The way some actors got around this was they would have a stake in the show as producer or some other title where they could get residuals in perpetuity. Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched and her husband Howard Asher were given the title of creators and she got residuals until she passed away.
