One of my favorites! A little piece of trivia: McCarthy was in the Twilight Zone movie in the 80s. He was one of the characters in the reimagined version of "It's a Good Life". He played a character named Uncle Walt.

There were other nods to the original series as well. For example, Burgess Meredith, veteran of four TZ episodes, narrated the film, introducing each segment.

Thanks as always for your amazing content. The flm imdustry first used this technique around 1931 or 32 in the film Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. The actor had the makeup in one color and in this instance they slowly changed the camera filter to expose the darker colored makeup making him transform to Hyde looking gruesome.

I first learned about this when I was in a college film class in 1976. It was used in the 1932 Frederic March Jekyll and Hyde film. When I bought the entire Twilight Zone series on DVD about 12 or so years ago, I saw this episode and, 'Hey! They're doing the strategically placed color makeup and changing the filter trick'. I never bothered to confirm that though. Thanks for this, Rick.

Who do I believe now? Other comment said that technique in Jekyll and Hyde was a mystery for years, but one day revealed it was using polarizing lens that was rotating
@kali3665
@kali3665 Год назад
@@milannesic5718 Rouben Mamoulian, who directed the original Jekyll and Hyde, refused to reveal the truth of how they did it for decades. It was only in the late 50s that William Tuttle, who actually DID the special effects for Jekyll and Hyde and later worked on Twilight Zone, exposed it, and he repeated the effect for this episode and others. You can also see it used in The Howling Man, Queen of the Nile, and, as I noted earlier, A Short Drink From a Certain Fountain.
@kali3665
@kali3665 Год назад
Twilight Zone would later do this trick in reverse in the 5th Season episode A Short Drink From A Certain Fountain, and I never noticed it until too many years after first seeing the episode. But then I was rather distracted by Ruta Lee. 🤣 This was a trick they could only do in black and white film, of course. Which is a shame - the film tricks we've lost due to the change of technology. That was the fun of Twilight Zone - they had access to many of the effects artists who worked on classic Universal Horror films, and that allowed them to keep the budgets cheap.

The Frederick March version of 'Dr Jeckle and Mr Hyde' from 1931 used this technique in the first part of the transition from the good Dr to Mr Hyde, interspersed with a jump cut to his mottled hands to allow for the full prosthetic makeup transition to the final character form with a final pan up. Bob Burns, a Hollywood special effects pro, used this technique for live performances at Halloween in his garage. Dr Jeckle's predominately red laboratory lights shifted to blue for the transition. While such an effect wouldn't work for film, it was perfect for a live performance. Some of Bob's works can be found on RU-vid, if you're interested.

This effect was used to horrifying effect in the movie "Sh! The Octopus" [1937] where an elderly spinster suddenly transforms into a horrific hag. [The clip is available on RU-vid] while the effect works exceedingly well in black and white, It's incorrect however that the effect ONLY works in Black and White. In 1888 the effect using various coloured lights on a LIVE STAGE allowed Actor Richard Mansfield to change SLOWLY before his audience's eyes from the kindly and handsome Dr. Jekyll into the bestial Mr. Hyde. The change coupled with Mansfield's performance was SO complete and SO terrifying that Mansfield was suspected by Scotland Yard of being Jack the Ripper.

As others have said, the effect you're enamored of was hardly "revolutionary" at the time, as it goes back to the dawn of the silent film days. And, in point of fact, your statement that "Rod Serling made sure" that this effect was used is not even remotely accurate. As writer/producer of this series, Serling had his hands full and had nothing to do with cinematic choices. That responsibility was solely the responsibility of the cinematographer, George T. Clemens, who had over 40 years worth of screen credits before Twilight Zone ever came into being. Further, Mr. Clemens was a camera operator on the 1932 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, where the color-contrast-fade trick came into prominence, so he was quite naturally more than familiar with the technique and had used it in other instances long before he put it to use on Twilight Zone. . . so let's please give credit where it's due.

I’ve seen nearly every episode of the Twilight Zone, but not when they first aired because we were not allowed to watch this program in our home in the early 60’s. My parents, and many other parents at that time, felt it would cause nightmares so it was prohibited in our house. Rod Serling was a genius during his time and I still watch all the re-runs which usually air around this time every year. PS- I usually snuck out of my room, crawling like a commando, and was somewhat successful in watching bits and pieces of these in creditable shows. Lots of memories and I’m although I’m 67 now, I treasure those simpler times.

Karloff's Frankenstein's monster had green makeup for the same reason. It comes up dead white on black and white film. The monster was meant to look cadaverous. The people that colorized the movie should have listened to a few film historians first, he was never meant to be green, just really pale. One of the Jekyll and Hyde transformations was done in a similar manner to this twilight zone effect, pretty sure it was the silent John Barrymore version. Old trick, they were using color variations for various effects from the beginning of black and white movies.

Does anyone remember a sci fi show........I don't recall if it was Twilight Zone or another series........but the premise was that a psychiatrist was called in to treat a nuclear physicist who was having mental difficulties but who was also working on America's next super bomb with more power than the hydrogen bomb. They told the Doctor to just nurse him along until he could finish the project. Well testing day came and reporters were gathered at the scientist's house with all the other scientists and they watched the test on television. Just before the new weapon was detonated a reporter asked the scientist what material he used for the bomb? The scientist said: What? The reporter repeated "What material? Uranium? Plutonium?" The scientist replied: "earth." The reporter goes: "earth?" The scientist reaches into a potted plant and pulls out a handful of earth and says: "Earth." ....as the picture fades to oblivion.

Hi, that was a great episode, the only red trick with black and white film was actually the police car in Car 54 where are you To have the police car a nice gloss black, it was actually painted bright red - this translated differently on B&W film and appears different to natural black The red black appears more glossy shiny black and real black cars come out as matt or semi gloss

That reminds me of stage tricks, back lighting or front lighting a cloth 'wall' for a completely different scene.

Reminds me of the old black and white 3d glasses with a red lens and a blue lens. It was used for the 3d version of “The Creature in the Black Lagoon”.

This effect was also used in Ben-Hur, but in reverse, to make the blemishes of Leprosy fade away from Judah's mother and sister as a miracle.

There was another technique done in a silent movie that was a mystery for several years. I believe it was a Dr. Jeckel and Hyde effect. The man's face would change grotesquely. It was revealed later that this was done with a polarizing lens. As that lens was rotated it created the effect.

What always spoils it for me is the lack of foreign accent in our character that is thousands of years old. If you are two thousand years old your first language can't be American English (our any other form of modern English.)

I believe that Estelle Linwood had a role in the wonderfully funny movie called "Murder by Death" which had an all star cast. She played the part of a nurse to the woman who was now taking care of her. Others in the cast include David Niven, Eileen Brennan, Peter Sellers, Peter Falk, Truman Capote, James Coco, Nancy Walker and so many others. It was based on a Neil Simon play. The gist of the move is that the World's greatest sleuths are invited to the Twain residence for a dinner and a murder. It is a tribute/take off of all the great movie detectives from the 40's and 50's. The movie is a wonderful piece of work that really should be reviewed. At least two actors are in it that are gay, they being James Coco and Truman Capote. So that should qualify as for sticking to the main idea of this channel.

I’ve been trying to find more artwork exactly like this: does anyone have info on the animation studio? I can’t find anything!

They kind of copycatted this storyline in the "Queen of the Nile" episode with Ann Blythe and her "mother" being her daughter and how she ended up doing away with her suitor with the scarub beetle!

As I finished viewing the video, I scan down and the first thing I see are a collection of ads all for skin care products. It seems the algorithm has gone all 'Twilight Zone'.
