After seasoning an aquarium full of mud, silt, sand and leaves, my experimental saltwater aquarium is finally ready for a pair of Twinspot Gobies. Finally, Cairns Marine have collected for me a pair of Twinspot Gobies, and in this video I head down to the LFS to pick up my treasured fish.
These fish rely exclusively on sifting a healthy sand bed of its microfauna. To keep their sandbed alive, I feed it Frenzy Fish Feed pellets every second day. To buy your Frenzy Fish Feed Pellets, go to

Great video Adam! you see even in the marine aquarium botanicals are useful 🙂 it's just a shame we can't use mangrove leaves here in Australia, what a stupid law especially when you see local councils cleaning up local beaches and discarding them, when I was in Cairns a few year back I saw them cleaning up Mangrove propagule off the for shore and binning them what a waste, I've seen the same happen in my local area as well, I enjoyed watching this you always produce interesting videos, I've also used Sea She-oak in the past, it gives me that feeling of when I used to look through rock pools in areas like Pottsville when I was a kid many years ago when these areas were still pristine, they are mostly built up now with mansions so much for protecting these areas, last time I was there I saw a palm leaf floating down stream and some lawn clippings but we still can't use mangrove leaves in our aquariums go figure.

Unfortunately I contributed to the urbanisation of the tweed coast, as I owned a landscaping business there for about 5 years. We did new houses as Casuarina and SALT estates were being built. I never thought about mangrove leaves, but yes, I guess they are restricted. Still, I can always use coconut husk, sea almond, pandanus, and yes, Coastal Sheoak. Don’t forget the logo( minus text) with the blue inside Australia

Excellent advice. Hope they are doing well still. Small is probably good at least you have their full lifespan. I collect fish for wholesale and can only wish everyone with a home system had the good advice to purchase suitable livestock for their tank. Keep up the good work

Is there a video of setting up the tank? I'd love to see it. We live in Cairns and would visit Cairns Marine often due to having our own marine tanks. We tried a pair of Twin Spots after staff told us that they easily take food. Well, obviously not and we watched ours starve to death. Once realising just how hard they were to keep, it was heartbreaking seeing how many were collected from the wild and sent to their deaths. I wish you luck brother and I reckon you're off to a much better start than a majority of us.

I’m disappointed to hear about your experience at Cairns Marine. I also shopped there, when they were open to the public 3 days a week. It worries me how many sand sifting gobies in general, and not just twinspots, are sold in retail stores. It’s very rare to see them in tanks long term. My aim with this video, is to hopefully illustrate how different their tank needs to be for success with this style of goby, but possibly other fish such as Stethojulis wrasse, tamarin and leopard wrasse, mandarins, and even the humble Copperband Butterfly. ru-vid.com/group/PL3TJwBL958AwQfN9IkjXMf9qpzacQLC2G&si=Is7Wz5T4rPHKfUHn

What an unusual looking fish, almost like they have wheels.

They certainly are unique. It’s the hopping motion, and two big eye spots which attracted me ( and the reason they are also called Crabeye Gobies)

I think this is one of my favourite videos on youtube. But.... do you have an update😂
@australianaquarist
@australianaquarist 3 месяца назад
Not yet. But I can say I have one out of the two not with me. I think it was possibly predated by a crab. The other goby is still going strong. I’m yet to actually feed the fish. I just feed the sandbed a couple of large pellets every second or third day.

Just checked back, so that’s 4 months without being “ directly fed”. I think the experiment is on the right path,
@australianaquarist

Yes. It’s a very different tank to today’s reef tanks, however I do feel hobbyists are excluding a range of fish possibilities, with the use of bare bottom tanks, dry rock, and bottled bacteria.

Thank you for doing this! I just recently got a pair of these gobies from my lfs, where they were encouraging me to get them as if they were cool and easy fish. I did my research first and still got them but at least with full knowledge what I'm getting myself into. (The other two pairs they had were already dead and sickly so I hoped the last pair still got better chance with me) Your videos allow me to learn a bit more and at least have some hope to be successful with keeping Hover and Floatie alive and happy. 🥲

Brilliant I’m so pleased you saw this video and have a better understanding of these gobies. This makes me happy. It is the whole reason for starting this project in the first instance. Please, I urge you , to consider setting them up in a species tank similar to the way I have, so that you can not be in the predicament of worrying about the fish, at the same time as worrying about your coral health, and nitrate - phosphate load etc. The hobby has stagnated in its thinking, and most advice you get about a marine tank will centre around what’s good for corals generally, and will shun the idea of deep substrates, intentionally adding botanicals etc. In saying that , I have added 3 Duncanopsammia, 1 Turbinaria and 1 Trachyphyllia to my tank, to assess how well they do in this environment. They are doing well. Good luck, they are fascinating little fish.

@@australianaquarist Thank you for all the tips! Unfortunately due to space limitations I cannot currently afford to set up a whole new big tank for them - as much as I would love to, but my main tank only got a few tiny fishes and some inverts and I try to implement a lot of what you did into it now! ☺ I have quite high nitrates, lots of semi-controlled algae growth and a whole lot of tiny hitchhiker critters of various kinds and it seems that both easy corals and animals are happy and healthy so far.
