I would put him up there as one of the greatest drummers, because there are others at the same level, in my opinion. Danny Carey from TOOL or Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) and of course the alien that only spoke in drum-patterns John "Bonzo" Bonham from Led Zeppelin. They all are incredible and have their own style that's for me the reason for not comparing them.

When you hear the " weird" sounds that is the changing from one radio station to another. Hence the title " Spirt of the Radio."
@toddvandell85
@toddvandell85 3 года назад
@@TwoSistersReact Especially the lyrics for this particular song. Reason being? As you noticed, it's a very happy-sounding, positive, upbeat, and even dancy feeling song... *MUSICALLY.* But, the major key the music is in, and it's bouncy, poppy sounding sensibilities musically? Hide much deeper, darker, and, ultimately, direly cynical lyrics, that talk about how so much of the radio business is more about compromise, salesmen, selling ads, and giving away "glittering prizes" which lead to "endless compromises" which then ultimately "shatter the illusion of integrity" meaning radio stations trying to gain larger listening audiences did promotional giveaways to their listeners that seemed to cast those radio stations' integrity in a not very pretty light. Also, I believe that the line "and the words of the prophets are written on the studio walls, Concert halls!" I believe the "prophets" Neil was referring to here, were actually *PROFITS* of a much more sinister, monetary type and value. Basically, the studios and concert halls need albums with hit singles to make any real money, or profits, and it's harder to finance a band's tour of concert halls without generating some profits with the sales of their albums. So, no album with any hit singles for the radio, translates to little or no money to finance a tour of the concert halls. So, lyrically? Basically 180° opposite from the music itself. Music is bouncy and upbeat. Lyrics are darker cynical and decidedly more downbeat. One of the joys of Rush is how often they do that: They employ happy music in complete contrast to not so happy lyrics. This is a song you could go back and listen to again, and focus exclusively on the lyrics, and you will come to appreciate the clever way the words and music counterbalance each other. (I believe they did that on purpose especially on this song, to make it even more cynical. Because it's so easy to get caught up in the jaunty musical feel, such that Neil's darkly cynical lyrics can slip right past you, not even popping up on your radar, until much later, when you stop and think "hey, those words weren't really happy or jaunty at all, like the music was". The subversive gift of Rush, that just keeps on giving: which is, that it can take several listens to a song before you realize just how deeply subversive they really were.) "Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based radio station CFNY-FM is cited as an inspiration for the song." (From Wikipedia's entry on the song itself.) That happens occasionally in blues music, too. The song "Further on Up the Road" , which is not a Rush song, is written in a major key, too, and has a slightly jaunty, upbeat feel to the music. But, then, the lyrics say "further on up the road, I hope someone hurts you the way you're hurting me." Subversive, too, because the lyrics throughout the song are dark, dire, and pained, while the music sounds super upbeat and happy. And it was written that way on purpose. I believe that was originally a Bobby "Blue" Bland song, but several artists have covered it, including Eric Clapton and Joe Bonamassa. "Further on up the road, someone's gonna hurt you like you hurt me (2×) Further on up the road, baby you just wait and see You got to reap just what you sow, that old saying is true (2×) Like you mistreat someone, someone's gonna mistreat you." (From Wikipedia's entry on that song.)

You two are way too cute for words. This band is legendary. Here are the names of the band members and the instruments they play. First is lead singer and bass guitarist Geddy Lee that also play the keys and guitar. Next is Alex Lifeson the lead guitarist and backing vocals. He at time plays the keyboard. Then their is Neil Peart, aka the Professor on the drums. That's it. Three extraordinary musicians. Sadly, Neil lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this year. Rush has many well known songs that have a steady rotation on the classic rock station and rock stations. I would check out Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Fly By Night, Working Man (pre Neil Peart), Trees, 2112 (be prepared to for this 20+ minute epic), New World Man, Subdivision, Big Money, Time Stands Still, The Garden (from Neil's last album "Clockwork Angels"), Closer To The Heart, and the list goes on and on. They were a Canadian band and have been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Have a blessed evening ladies.

Been a Rush fan ever since my high school days, starting around 1980 and I was fortunate enough to see them in concert 3 times. They were 3 master musicians from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and graced us with wonderful music for over 40 years. They officially retired in 2015, and sadly the drummer/lyricist Neil Peart passed away in January of 2020 after a 3 1/2 year battle with brain cancer. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. They also have a star on the Walk of Fame, in the Canadian Songwriter Hall of Fame, and were awarded the prestigious Order of Canada 🇨🇦. They gave also won 2 Juno awards, Canada's version of the Grammy. If you find yourself really enjoying their lyrics, Peart also wrote several books, mainly based upon his experiences on the back of a motorcycle though Canada, the US, and Central America, as well as Africa and China. I won't suggest a single song because their library is so vast, but I'll just say, "Enjoy"

Some people aren't meant to "get" Rush. If you're dancing and talking about how happy the song feels, then you know you're one of those people. The song criticized the radio industry "shatters the illusion of integrity". Cheap Trick came around 1972 and the classic Rush line up began in 1974. Rush was formed in 1968 by bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson while in high school. The lyric video creator spelled *elusive* incorrectly. It's not "illusive." *Elusive* because the song they want to hear eludes them until their favorite DJ plays it, and that "magic music makes your morning mood" (drummer/lyricist Neil Peart getting all alliterative there, with all those M's in that lyric line alone).

I was 11 when this song came out. I didn't really discover it until about 4 years later, when I started playing the bass and was looking for some music with good bass parts to try to learn. That's when I discovered Geddy Lee and Rush and my musical life has never been the same since. These guys are so talented and they were anti-rock stars in the way they lived their lives on and off stage. They're really students of music and they never stopped growing and experimenting as musicians and they were good friends, which was a real gift; and that helped them stay together and continue making music for 40 years. Very rare for a band to continue creating at such a high level for four decades. They are my musical heroes. I owe them so much. I hope you will enjoy listening to many more of their songs, whether you react to them on the channel or just listen to them on your own. These guys have given their lives to the art of making quality music for us to enjoy.

Maybe they're a Spanish band eh? 😁 Not quite but those three guys out of Toronto became one of rock's premier bands rooted from the guitarist's (Alex) basement with his with his childhood schoolmate, Geddy who became one of Rock's most renowned bass players. They released there first album with drummer John Rutsy who fell ill. Enter the Professor. Neil, may he rest in peace, took over the lyrics from Geddy and became recognized as a god behind the drum kit. Forty plus years of musical mastery followed. "Xanadu" live from, "Exit Stage Left" is mostly certainly a good way to blow your socks off as you jump into this rabbit hole.

I recall in 1980, sitting through another boring round of 'home economics' at school (cooking or sewing or some shit!) and hearing a fellow student belting some lyrics to this song: Of salesmen. Of salesmeeennnn. Ooooooof SALESMEN!. Me and my buds had a good chuckle at that - not in mockery, but in appreciation. My brother gave up on Rush following their album, Hemispheres, but I stuck with 'em 'til the end of the 80's. Rush in Rio/Live in Concert (on DVD) brought me back into the Rush camp and I saw 'em live in 2008 (third and final time). Lee was FEROCIOUS, Lifeson was EPIC and Peart looked like a god damn OCTOPUS, hammering on the skins. The guy was ALL OVER THE PLACE, ALL THE TIME, whilst still holding down the rhythm! Even though the sound was shit, way up there in the rafters (should have bought tickets far earlier!), it was nonetheless a spectacle. Long live the legacy of RUSH!!! LL

You just listened to the greatest power trio of all time. Rush falls under progressive rock. And yes, Neil is the greatest drummer of all time (In my book) and I may end up watching Back to the Future tonight because of your shirt.

The different "feels" of the song were there to imply that you were changing the stations on the radio as you were driving! If you liked this, there are so many more of their songs out there. I'd suggest "Tom Sawyer" - first song of theirs I heard and I was hooked!
