Welcome back to a rescue introduction video of two new hamsters here at my animal rescue. Unfortunately there will be times where we may have to save severely neglected hamsters from bad owners who no longer want them. While some can be excusable for not knowing, fair warning to my audience, that the owners we got them from were mocking when we brought up our concerns to them about their "upkeep". See for yourself the filthy, molding conditions and their overall health.
Awareness for proper care needs to be shared. It can easily be accessible online, however google search results don't always show good care information which ends up misguiding people. While the owners simply "didn't care" about their hamsters and wanted to profit off of their suffering, not everyone who has bad care is a bad person. SO KEEP THIS IN MIND! They may just need guidance and understanding.

The excuse that because hamsters have short lives means they don’t get the best treatment seems off to me. Shouldn’t they get good treatment BECAUSE they don’t have long lives? You aren’t going to be stocking up on food, bedding and chew toys for long so why not get more expensive and nicer ones.

Oh also I have kids and 100% agree. You don’t let them hold something that tiny on their own. My son was 3.5 when we got our pet rats, and I supervised and taught him how to handle them. I would not leave a child alone with a small animal at all. It’s unacceptable and 2 year olds as you mention do not understand how hard they are squeezing, or that they can’t throw a small fluffy creature.
@sinandcyanide7505
@sinandcyanide7505 4 года назад
There are 5 and 8 year olds I've had to ban from playing with my foster kittens because they squeeze too hard. My 4 year old isn't allowed to hold any of the animals either. She can hand feed the rats and pet the cats. That's it. Because children are... children?
@vaporean_boylove.0w083

@@sinandcyanide7505 That sounds fair honestly. If the kids are too rough then they can't really hold them or even be alone with them.

About 2 or 3 years ago my cousin drove my mom and I to a car dealer and she had her 2 year old with her and they have a cat (the car dealership) and instead of petting the cat she smacked it! I tried showing her the right way to pet the cat but she smacked it again. Little kids and animals don't usually mix well.
@Carolinagirl1028
@Carolinagirl1028 4 года назад
Agreed. A child who can not even go to school yet should never be interacting with an animal unsupervised or sometimes even when supervised. Now once a child gets older it all depends on the child and how responsible they are. My son was 8 when he got his first hamster. However it took several months of us, including him, doing research, watching videos, and discussing his responsibilities. When we finally went to the pet store to get his hamster he began informing others, including the employee, about proper hamster care. Still for the first month his hamster’s tank had to remain in our living area so we could watch him interact with him before moving him to his room. I think having a pet can be good for kids, but the kids need to be taught proper care, handling, and responsibility. One of my biggest pet peeves is parents who allow their child to get a small animal as a pet but never make them take responsibility for their pet and then eventually allow them to treat the animal as disposable when they get bored.
@constantine9142
@constantine9142 4 года назад
@@Carolinagirl1028 this I can agree with. I let my kid that young hold kittens and etc but I watched him and made him sit down and hold it that way if the kitten scratched him by accident he wouldn't react and drop them by accident cause even when you teach them better accidents happen so prevention needs to be a concern as well. My kid is the most gentle giant even today cause I taught him how so it always irritates me when I see an older kid that was never taught better or has been taught a refuses to learn like my nephew.... I'll explain why I can't take my nephew or my mother anywhere nice together. I took my kid who was 8 yrsold and nephew around 11-12 yrsold to a pet store that lets you handle the animals where I've taken my kid loads of times with no problems and I have a simple rule don't touch any animal without asking me or my fiance right there with them. I figured even though my nephew doesn't listen too well he's older now and my mother is there so she can focus on watching him and he will ask me or my fiance if he wants to hold a ferret or something so nothing will happen. Boy was a wrong he didn't listen and with my idiotic mother who isn't the brightest let him pick up a bird without asking us to help who of course tried biting the crap out of him and he in turn tried throwing it off his hand... I of course stopped him immediately and gave him and my mother a freaking earful cause I was pissed cause he didn't listen, my mom who was with him was just letting him do whatever and laughing at the situation thinking it's all just a freaking riot, and the bird could of got hurt. The bird wasn't even mean cause me and my fiance were holding it 5 minutes before the fiasco no prob. I know too my dad would've been pissed off too if he pulled that crap. So it proves age isn't everything with pets cause my kid is at least 3 years younger than my nephew and never does that crap and actually listens. I know my nephew was taught better by his parents but idk what is up with that kid but that's why I never want to watch him cause I end up yelling at him most of the time over stuff I never even yell at my kid for and to top it off I get attitude from him and my mother defending his crap. So I refuse anymore or if I do take him somewhere it's always with my fiance and without my mother if my dad isn't around cause he's worse when she's around.

Thank you for holding yourself back! That was very responsible! I've been doing the same thing for over a year, but it's a bit different. I've been keeping Ratties for about 6 years and used to rescue them left and right. It got a bit out of hand, especially when I had 11 at one time. I did 3 years of research before getting my first girls and am still doing research, so I did have plenty of knowledge, but it was still too much. Rats are extremely close to my heart (no seriously, I'm a guy and I have Rat coloring books) and I do plan to adopt 3 boys soon (anywhere from 6-12 months), but I feel it's just not the time. Remember, do your research before adopting/rescuing/or gosh for bid buying any animal. Good luck 😉

My kids love animals and I 100% supervise my kids with small animals. I hold the small animal, like a rodent or reptile, and teach gentle touches. They don’t hold animals until they’re like 7. They aren’t allowed to pick them up on they’re own until they’re 12. My kids are being raised to love and respect animals. Those poor animals. I always gave my hamsters plenty of chew toys. I was so scared their teeth would grow and I’d have to take them to the vet to get them fixed.

I don't think I ever hit my hamster if my memory serves me correctly, but I did try to put them in toy cars and shit like that. My parents kept the poor thing in a small colorful plastic cage, but at least we cleaned it once every week. I feel horribly bad for what I've done, kids definitely should not have any kind of pet till they're way older, maybe 12, or 10 if given a serious talking to. I will be the first to admit I did accidentally drop a very stressed angry gerbil. Not hard or even far. I was sitting down on the carpeted floor at age 9 or 10 (this was over 10 years ago now though). It bit my hand and my hand jerked and it fell to the floor. It wasn't mine but my friends. It was kept in a bright colourful cage that for sure was not for gerbils whatsoever. They were massive 'animal lovers' and always bragged about how well they took care of their animals. Looking back at it now, they were neglectful as anything. The owner got bit a ton by the gerbil and other small critters. They bred and sold their dogs, though I will say they did this pretty nicely. But the way they treated them was still horrible overall, amd didn't make up for how they treated things like gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, etc.

My kids are largely taking care of our two rats and one hamster. They feed and water them and help me clean the cages and socialising them. My kids are great at taking care of their pets and they love them. But I absolutely wouldn't trust them alone with the rodents. Kids don't always think about the feelings of other living things and that can lead to accidents or injuries. One accidental drop could seriously hurt the animals or lead to a nasty bite. Or, like my daughter admitted to me, she scared her favorite rat because she blew air at her. She didn't know why she did it, she just wanted to play, but the rat didn't like it. Thankfully rats are very forgiving with a crispy rice treat and all was forgiven, but she still did it and didn't know why exactly and acknowledged she's shouldn't have done it. She is only 8 so I don't expect her to be a great pet owner, it is largely the parents responsibility to teach them responsible pet ownership. Something people don't consider is that when you have small children and pets it's double the work and responsibility on both sides because you have to set a good example and teach both a pet and a child at the same time.

The girl actually knew everything we needed to know about hamster care before we even got "Rabies", & the boy has been really awesome with the lil hammy so far....but that goTdamn dinosaur debacle is the only thing that his sister & I are having a hard time with him on. He wants it for "Rabies" so bad, as like an auxiliary play space or something. He has begged for it over & over. His sister & I reason with him, remind him of the DIY playground that we set up for "Rabies" on a regular. We remind him that "Rabies" is a fat, furry chunk & probably won't even be able to move around comfortably inside of the dino debacle. We've also reminded him of all the lovely dinosaur toys he has in his room. We've done all of this repeatedly, but that dino debacle just blows his mind. He wants it, & he will not stop wanting it anytime soon. He will not get it. I hate these crap companies & their crap products & the way they target kids like that...because I get it- I had hamsters as a child & if there had been a unicorn hamster house or a rainbow brite hamster house I would have longed for it just the way my boy wants that shit dinosaur. Sorry I wrote a book about this, but the dino debacle is a sore spot for me. @Millie The Bunny Your sister may be good with animals but you should never let her take care of them unsupervised. As smart as some kids are, mistakes can still happen and children will not know how to properly handle emergency situations no matter how good they are. I used to work at an equestrian center that had a lot of small farm animals and the kids there were all so good but we still had chicks and baby pigs get sick because they didn't understand how to feed or handle them alone, even if they had done the correct procedure numerous times before. Never assume they'll be okay because kids are still kids.

@@rolfs2165 you're right. This was more of a general rant more so than towards this specific person. I don't expect someone this dumb to know that, but some people will think "oh, well, MY child is behaved and can be left alone with/handle pets for a long time" until this kind of thing happens to them and then they wonder what they did wrong.

All kids are different. My son has adored animals from the time he was a baby… our dog was 2 when my son was born and he adored my son… we’ve had hamsters, a whole litter of kittens when he was 2 years old…., litter of dogs at my sister’s when he was 3… bunnies, gerbils…. My son was 8 when he helped me save 5 orphaned wild bunnies.. he fed them with a syringe and stimulated them to pee… we took care of them for a long holiday weekend before being able to drop them off with a licensed rescuer..obviously every kid is different but my son was super gentle and I taught him how to pet and hold our animals and I trusted him…. How to groom them, clean their cage/enclosure, etc.. obviously if you have a strange child in your house you are super careful about letting them pet or play with your animals.. but I totally disagree with you - as long as you know the child and have spent time teaching the child how to lovingly pet and hold the animal, you can trust the child…

When I saw that dwarf I wasnt thinking wettail... I was thinking urine scald. I ended up with a rabbit with that, nasty business, I did have to rinse that area till it went away. Basically she couldnt clean herself properly, wasnt urinating right, and the urine builds... the acid causes rash and balding. Nasty business. If that hamster was urinating excessively out of nervousness and stress, might've gotten some scald.

The Petcos and Petsmarts around me are selling animals. They just don’t let you handle them in-store. I only went to those stores for extra supplies, I recently got a Chinese hamster from a reputable place (not a chain store) and she has a lot more energy than my last hamster, so I needed to get her more interactive toys and a different wheel that she couldn’t fling herself off of. She lives in a huge bin and I swear she gets lost in it lol.

Michał how is supporting rodent mills rescuing?! large pet stores such as petco and pet smart get their hamsters from rodent mills where many hamsters (30+ usually) are kept in very small spaces when they are very young. when u buy a hamster there, all you're doing is supporting those places by keeping business going. its much better to get a hamster from a rescue and to support them. plus, if u get a hamster from a pet store, it will be more likely to have a disease such as wet tail, because they will be very stressed which causes their immune system to be lowered. there's really no reason to get a hamster from a pet store besides convenience, which isn't worth a hamsters life.

I just wanted to come on here and sadly announce that last week at the age of 1 year and 6 months she has passed away. I wrote a speech in which I would like to share today, “I kept the name Phoenix because i really loved the meaning behind it. You’ve truly risen from the ashes. Im so sorry that your first few months on this earth were ones of mistreatment and pain. You deserved so much better than that. I’m so greatfull for munchies place for rescuing you and giving me the chance to give you everything you deserved and more I loved how every night you would wake up and sit up in your cage and wait for me to take you out to play. I loved the way you stuffed your cheeks with veggies. I loved how gently you took treats from my hand. Phoenix, you’ve truly blossomed through out this past year. I love you forever and always” Munchie, thank you for giving these amazing little creatures a second chance of life and for giving people like me and so many others the option to adopt and not shop. We appreciate all the work you do!

This reminds me when I went to the pet store to get stuff for my Syrian hamster and saw a winter dwarf digging around in her food. I fell in love but I knew that I should never buy pets from a pet store so I didn’t but I could not stop thinking about her all day and ALL night I could not sleep. Finally I gave in and bought everything she would need and don’t worry I got a huge bin cage and good food and all that I got her and I could finally rest and be calm like I did something right. Everthings goin great and 2 day ago I wake up and check on her/ freya because it’s cleaning day and there’s blood all over the cage..... at first I’m like hamsters have periods!?!?! I researched it and found out that female hamsters don’t have periods so I freak out and run to her cage with my brother. I see a hole in her bedding that she might have dug up so I follow the tunnel to where she died I’m not gonna go into detail but she probably had a long painful death and Idk why she even died. I’m never gonna get that image out of my head and now I’m sticking to Syrian hamsters and avoiding pet stores. So please don’t get hamsters from pet store because those hamsters have terrible genetics and might just die after a week and etc....

My sister had mice from the pet store (my other sister convinced her to breed them as food for her snakes). She started out with three females and two males, IIRC one or two of the females died within a week, the younger male within a month, so she went to get more (from the same store), most of the babies they had were disfigured, some litters were bitten dead right after birth … It was a complete and utter shitshow, I don't think any of them lived more than half a year, aside from the older male who made it to almost three years. (And looking back, his cage was half as big as it should have been - and that was the larger one where the females were in before.)

@@rolfs2165 please please, if she already has not tell your sis to transition her snek to f/t feeders brought from a reputable source that humanely euthanise them. I would put him in his ball to run while I cleaned his cage. My dad lost him a few times in the couch while holding him. I loved him so much and was so devoted but I knew nothing, as I just used what I was given. My ham died when I was 11 yrs old. She knew the rules were NO touching. She got to drop food into the bin and treats as well as getting to talk to the hamster all the time. After 6 months of practicing on stuffed animals a gentle 1 finger tip pet technique I allowed her to touch her back that way while I was holding her. Even then it was like 2-3 "pets" before hammie wanted to move and we would be done petting her.

I don't even know why people get pets if they don't know how to properly take care of them. Before I got my first hamster 2 years ago a couple months before I turned 13, I made sure that I did my research. These past couple of years has been a real turning curve and it's thanks to people like Munchie who provide the right care and information about how to properly take care of hamsters. Since I found Munchie's channel, I have learnt so much about hamsters and their care. Last month, I upgraded my hamster's cage and, despite not being at home to actually look after him because I'm currently in foster care and i can't have my precious little boy with me, my mum is doing her absolute best for him. He now also has a bigger wheel and from what my mum has been saying and from seeing him via video call, he seems much happier. When I go back home, I am going to be diying him a cage which will have 1786sq inches of floor space!!❤❤
