I love when Matt and Morgan go head to head. It shows the difference between a ranked competitive eater and us normal people. Matt is a God at eating, but Morgan has the greatest laugh of all time. If I heard his laugh in a crowded room I'd know it instantly

I know it’s just “water” but I’m grossed out by it

For everyone being negative, this is meant for people with swallowing issues. If they didn’t have thickened drinks, the fluid would simply go into their lungs. Many people with disabilities drink different consistency’s along with their food consistency has to also be altered to a purée.

As a medical speech-language pathologist I am SO happy that you mentioned this thickened liquid is used for people with dysphagia (a swallow impairment). I treat people daily who unfortunately need to drink this, or even thicker, consistency of liquids. Why? Dysphagia is a swallowing impairment which can be caused by a number of things such as: stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, ALS (or Lou Gehrig's disease) etc. For a lot of people with dysphagia they may aspirate. Meaning food/liquids/saliva goes into the lungs. This can in turn lead to aspiration pneumonia. Thickened liquids are used in a case by case basis to allow people to drink without having liquids go into the lungs. The slower moving consistency allows for people to get ready to swallow and initiate a swallow and possibly for slower movement in the pharynx (throat) to allow the lungs to be closed off and have all fluids directed to the stomach. Our abilities to swallow is very complex! It’s my job to help these individuals resume a normal diet, if possible! Thanks for allowing an educational opportunity! Who knows, maybe someone will google dysphagia after seeing this video!!!
