The sound design in Thief is what makes these games. I've never played any other game where you actively listen to the sound of your own footsteps. Standing in one spot and just listening is a frequent occurrence. And the sounds that threats and enemies made was more menacing and more important than their actual appearance.
These are probably the very best "scary" NPCs I've ever seen in any game. The visuals, animation, voice mixing, and the chain rattling all came together to create the horrifying presentation. But the one factor that most people overlook is the real reason they were so terrifying... THE GAMEPLAY. These dudes ran so fast you could barely get away (without resorting to cheap strafejumping) and if they got close enough, their swordskills were insanely good and fast. I have never lasted more than 3 or 4 seconds in an up-close swordfight against these guys. So yeah, add the thematic elements to the gameplay elements and the result is the Haunts, aptly named so.
@@vibey4649 Unfortunately, it is not popular here in Germany either. But as part of my growing up, I took it deeply to my heart and will still be playing it 10 years from now.
Its funny, hes routinely stealing like solid gold ancient artifacts and gems and each mission his rents due...like guy how damn expensive is your little wood shack?!
2:15 Probably my favourite sound that they make. It doesn't always mean that you're dead, but the warning is good enough to warrant you being a bit more careful

its creepy whne you hear the one below the cemetery in the mission ' eavesdropping ' theres some tombstones in the back of the catherderal, when i first heard it i thought it was like ghosts..then i found out theres one in the basement walking around through the catacombs- freaky as crap, then i ran upstairs with him chasing me, a robot fired a cannon ball, and it him him and he died LOL
it is even worse when you are playing the game at night, and hearing the chains rattling whilst they are chasing you and throw in their evil laughter to the mix and you have yourself one hell of a nightmarish experience...
The wails of the apparitions caused me terror, I swear I was terrified to play those levels only for those ghosts but at the same time they were my favorites only for those ghosts. xD
True but most skeletons are basically mute weaklings in games/movies. These ones are armored, have a bigass maul and the whispers just brings their creepiness out a lot
@@tonyc.0451 I did not call the third title either, my favorite is the first because it is more taken to the paranormal, the 2 is more technological so to speak although it has dark moments as well. If you followed the titles for their stories, the third will call you then, in the deadly shadows. (spoliler alert) the third title, is connected with the previous 2 and the antagonist of this is Gamal (that girl you saw in the cinematics in Age Metal) was not really a girl. I had to auto-spoil to find out but it was worth it. The one I need to play is the PS3 that I understand was the last title to date.

I think that's the most disturbing line. I assume it refers to how the Old Quarter burned down (as another line mentions something about "keep the foundations from the flames.")
Its because of these fuckers I have to turn screen 180 degrees every time I play, just to make sure I am not being followed by some random Haunt catching me from no where and speeding up to me in less than 2 seconds.

Holy shit this scared the fuck out of me when I become spotted and hear that horrible laugh while being sliced to death in seconds. Looking Glass really did an excellent job with the audio.
Just watched a short video titled, "Sounds that give gamers PTSD". I had to come here when I was disappointed Hammerite Haunts weren't included in the short.
Revelation and epiphany can kill who you were, renewing you. Harsh truths or betrayals can destroy a person, and require healing, or they live in hell continually. And in a world of magic spells and artifacts, literally manifesting projectiles, heh heh.
It's followed by "deep through bloodied darkened thoughts" It could be that the hammerite was once a sinner/unbeliever,with their mind filled with "darkened thoughts",but the word of the builder metaphorically pierced through the darkness in their heart like a spear,clearing their soul of sin and allowing them the honour of worshipping Him Or maybe I'm putting too much thought into this

I've never been able to figure out what the bit at 1:11 is saying. It sounds like "Suffer the flames of centuries of my god!", but I doubt that's right.
The echoing, hollering and sometimes discordant laughter reminds me a lot of Baal from Diablo 2. 😜Mayhaps Thief's Hammer Haunts' sound design served as inspiration.
I remember the terror of running for my life away from them in the first encounter (the haunted cathedral level). THat section was as scary as it could have been
First time i met them in Thief 2, the mission at mechanists cathedral listen to truart's and karras' speech. Down in the tombs. At an age of 15, i was close to shit my pants.
That is presumably what makes them. As it's suggested a majority of them stir from being sinners and never were truly believers. Due to this, they were brought back for their failure and sin.
These guys have NO RIGHT to be this creepy in a game this goofy! I played the game for the first time last year and intentionally avoided spoilers like the plague. I never realized haunts could be taken out with a sword and had to avoid them for the most part or use mines. For some I used holy water when I had to.
not sure if correcting the designer in terms of the weapon (most likely considering the sword being an engine thing for having the strongest endlebel animation, whike it shouldve been a hammer) is a legit thing to do, when the deeper lore implications would be some old knights order once havin been infiltrated by the hammer priests, which were most-likely necromamcers. clues is where is hammers there iu undead, hammer ancients are undead, hammer priests are denied salvation and throw skulls like deathmagic literal version. so - while the woodsie one is as real as it gets (till blown up) the master rbuilder is a bogus fabrication by necromancers n likely pedos that use declarative rethorics to overshadow that their hunt for the undead is just them using dispellmagic to clean up behind them, selling it as the builders holy powers. i consider this one nailed. np
