Scrap yards should not accept more than one cable or one cat converter from a customer unless they can show they are a representative of a auto repair business. How many cables or cat converters have I personally taken to a recycle yard? ZERO in over 55 years. In my experience they are not a high failure rate item.

You don't know where majority of property tax is spent on. It's going to school districts. And it's been that way for over 100 years. State and local municipalities across the country use the revenue from property taxes to help build and maintain schools and pay teacher salaries. I feel your pain just as much but stop sending your kids to school if you don't like it. Or if you don't have kids, don't make any in the foreseeable future whether through real effort or by mistakes.

I mean, someone coming in with a cut ev charger or multiples is a dead giveaway. And they probably came into the salvage yard on foot or in their gas powered vehicle 😂
Easy solution, reverse everything. Change out the charge stations and have EV owners carry on board a cable. Plug the cable in the charging station then plug in the car. At home will be a different story. Have surveillance cameras and alarms
I live in Michigan. Took some old aluminum gutters to the recycle center for $. They scanned my DL and finger printed me! You would think some homie with a trunk load of cut off EV charge cables would stoke up some curiosity at a scrap yard and question him about it? Naa, then the yard won't make $ either.
@@longmuskox4194 I think it should be a National law. Precious metal theft is running rampant. If you bring in copper wire, prove you are a licensed electrician. If you bring in old CATs, prove you own a licensed auto repair shop, etc.
@@curtchase3730 I agree, it should be a National law. But, I have scrappers that drive around my neighborhood for trash days. I'm happy to see them. If what they collect can be melted down, or repaired, or reused in some way, then that's better than sending it to a landfill. Separate licensing with background checks for those folks also.
Maybe it is time to require ID for anyone selling to scrap yards. And yes, I get that the innocent person who is selling legit scraps is now subject to unnecessary scrutiny. Small price to pay to protect us all in my opinion.
I bought my used cable on eBay but it was from the seller’s old OpenEVSE build. I needed it to combine with an OEM Clipper Creek Gen2 board that GM used in their portable EVSEs.
Nobody is paying 15 to $20 for a f****** cable for scrap value give me a f****** break coppers at $4.30 f****** cents a pound. Those cables don't weigh that much!!
Yeah when I lived in a bad neighborhood for a while they broke my car door lock. They would enter the vehicle at night and steal the $20 phone chargers every time I replaced them and take spare change out of the center console making sure to leave the pennies. I don't see how the effort was worth it.
I had a pile of sand stolen from behind a grocery store I was helping to remodel. It was on a concrete parking lot, they stole a 12 yard truckload of the stuff overnight.

Anyone selling metals to scrap yards should have to register with the state!!! And the scrap yards should have to keep a log of who turned in what kind of metal!!!
Your, and those who like your post, ignorance is showing. Most who recycle scrapes are not from any crime. What you'd be doing is welcoming the government to seek additional tax for them reclaiming a little money back from something that was previously bought and taxed. Anyone that recycles already have to provide their ID. The businesses keep detailed record of every transaction. Which are available to the police.
When I bring crushed Aluminum cans to the scrap yard the ask for name and address on for the invoice. $14.00 worth of cans saved for 14 months, not worth the hassle. I will recycle and let the trash truck have em next year.

I doubt criminals carry ID and even if they did, it's probably not traceable to them. But most criminals are lazy and dumber than a box of rocks. That's why they can't get a JOB!
This is happening everywhere (in the USA). Probably not so much in other countries. Most EV’s have a feature to trigger the alarm when the cable is unplugged. Newer cars have a locking mechanism that prevents the charging cable from getting disconnected when the car is locked. All this is necessary because some of the population doesn’t respect others.
I remember when siphoning gasoline out of your tank was a big fad. Copper prices are up right now. They need to make the cables out of aluminum, like the power lines bringing electricity to your house. Recycling prices for aluminum are a lot lower. Some will still be stolen, however. Illegal metals like catalytic converters are shipped to China for recycling. Shipping cost is nothing because of all the empty containers hauled back there.
Foreal lol I never thought of these cables being stolen. It sucks though because I witnessed 2 men stealing the cables out of about 5 street lights around 3pm. I called the police reported it I even saw the house they went in ti with the cables in their garage. Told the cops the address and everything and they said they couldn't do anything. Need a to rig it up such that when they pull the cable like that the insulation pulls away and they end up holding the 220V 60amp wires with their bare hands.
Most garages are too small to fit a average sized SUV and don't even think about getting a pickup in there. My Jeep Wrangler will not fit in our garage (too tall), and my wife's Nissan Kicks barely fits.
You should never charge an electric car in your garage in case it catches on fire. And if your home is attached to your garage, you could loose your home too. It is even more important to charge outside away from anything that could possibly burn,,,,,,,,
Charging cable thefts are like bread crumbs in comparison to catalytic converter thefts. Sure, taking catalytic converters need a little bit more skill than cutting cables, but it's also much more lucrative, and experienced thieves can do it in half a minute...
What the point in refilling your tank it's only going to get used up and then you have to refill it again, just another problem with combustion engines.
Vegas crime is out of control. Im so glad to be out of there. Before I left, someone tried to steal the neighbors artificial lawn and another neighbor had their tree stolen.
They do, however only for the proprietary charger (level 1) that comes with the car but most ev owners switch to an aftermarket level 2 charger that doesn’t lock
10 feet of charging cable open for anybody to steal is a death sentence for charging stations. As time goes on the chances of you finding a working charging station will diminish to a point where it’s just not worth it anymore.
A week off line! One of my favorite stations has been down 2 months with cut cables. 2 other sites have been down longer a total of 12 chargers. The trouble is the thieves have found out what happens when you cut the cable, NOTHING! A message may pop up on a computer screen somewhere in the country. By the time someone reacts it's been several hours.
In San Francisco an elderly member of the family sits outside watching the charging on the street parking area in front of the house. The garage is full of junk.
I see the next generation of charging stations where the car owner brings his own cable. IOW, the cable you use at home can be disconnected and use on the road. More cost and more regulations, but it's possible.
Change the design of those charging stations, something like a cable that retracts automatically when finish charging. To release the cable the user will need a pin or biometrics to use the service.
I could be wrong but I'm willing to bet they have too much crap in their garage. They have two cars parked in the driveway. Clean out some space and park it inside and charge it inside. Problem solved.
