Hello, thank you always for your helping videos:) Do you mind making one regarding the thickness of the lens as more than 0?? And I’d be more than happy if you post videos of how to derive the ray transfer matrices for flat and curved mirrors too.. Please consider making them:)

In the matrix formalism,what advantages do we get if we consider the lens to be thin??

Great question. Basically we can apply two refraction matrices and don’t need to worry about an extra propagation matrix in between the two surfaces.

In general, R2 can be negative or positive, but you will want to subtract 1/R1 from 1/R2 because you're going from low refractive index -> high refractive index in one case and high refractive index -> low in the other case.
