I'm Irish, Nick, and Lizzy were just a fact of life for us. Everyone knew them, and nearly everyone loved them. They were their own worst enemies, drug and lifestyle wise. They should have been absolutely huge.

Thanks man. Thin Lizzy, best band ever. Totally unique. And remember; everything after 1983 is not Thin Lizzy. The band folded in 83. Lynott died in 86. The later Lizzy tours is not the real deal. Thin Lizzy was Philip Lynotts band. Without him, there is no Thin Lizzy. I think you get the essence of the band very well. Lynott was a black Irishman, lyricly more like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Springsteen than his hard rock likes. Had three books of poetry published. His vocal style is what I call hard rock crooning. Often unike phrasing and storytelling. One producer called him the Sinatra of rock. Thin Lizzy could do any style. The musicality is just phenomenal. If u want me to put a marathon together that shows the diversity of the band, shout out. The did everything from calypso to metal. There will never be a band like them.

Actually, everything after 1979 and Black Rose is not Thin Lizzy. After that, they became just another Rock and Roll band and lost what made them unique. They still gave us 4 or 5 great albums though, which is better than most bands manage and Phil Lynott is a genuine icon of rock.

That’s your opinion Ask Scott , Brian and Darren and Sykes Thin Lizzy was their Band too not just Lynotts If they want to tsar Lizzy back out on the road am sure they would have Phil’s blessing . Honestly spread the word around to future generations and explain if you though new Lizzy was good listen to old Lizzy wow . I mean took my kids to watch the Skye’s reincarnation of the band and they were blown away especially getting the chance to see and hear Scott G . For me I closed my eyes and wished Lynott was still hear but the sound those guys still make is awesome

@@danhalpin3646 and that’s your opinion. I’ve seen the later versions myself, and i love Scott, Sykes and all the rest of them. But to me, their versions is a tribute act. Would be better off calling it an evening of Thin Lizzy or anything else than Thin Lizzy. Saw them in Oslo with Tommy Aldridge on drums. That was as far removed from Brian Downeys groove and swing you could get. It was like a heavy metal band covering lizzy tunes. Great to hear the songs. But Thin Lizzy it was not.

Here's a fun fact, Nick - despite the "trademark" Thin Lizzy harmonies and wah-wah solos, you've listened to solos by four different guitarists: Brian Robertson (Ballad of a Hard Man & Opium Trail), Scott Gorham (Bad Reputation), Gary Moore (Black Rose) and Snowy White (Chinatown). Yet it always sounds like 'Lizzy!

So called classic rock radio features 99% of the time only the same 2 songs representing this band.... The Boys are Back in Town and Jailbreak.... both from the Jailbreak album. Both good songs, but both overplayed to death. Only 1 cover band I've played in featured other TL songs ..... 9 deep cuts, and the 2 overplayed ones mentioned were no where to be found in any of our set lists, unless they were specially requested! Please continue, Nick with this great band, thanks! 👍

Hey Nick , great to see you getting into some deeper Lizzy cuts ! Cheers to Nick for the requests 👍👍.Your ear is really good ! Brian Robbo Robertson (first 4 tracks), was well known for his Cry Baby Wah-Wah solos. It's Gary Moore on Black Rose , and Snowy White on Chinatown.All alongside Scott Gorham of course. Lizzy were twice the band when live , between 75-78. The Live & Dangerous album is renowned for showcasing some of their best songs live. Remarkably , it was mostly recorded on the US 77 tour where they supported Queen ! There is still some deep gold to be mined here Nick.I hope you get to explore further my friend. Kudos to you and Lex. One of my favourite channels ❤️

You're nearly right - it's actually Scott Gorham playing the solo on Bad Reputation. Robbo had effectively quit/been sacked when they were recording it, and Scott did most of the album by himself. He deliberately cocked up the solos on a couple of tracks (Opium Trail, Killer without a Cause,) and said they needed Robbo. Philo relented, and he was back in the band (for a while)

Enjoyed this reaction Nick! Thin Lizzy is my favourite band of all time. I got to see them live in 1983. I was in the second row of the Balcony (Brighton Centre, UK). It was so loud that I could feel every note Phil played on the bass in my diaphragm. Thunder and Lightning and Cold Sweat were metal tracks.

I think the two ingredients Thin Lizzy had in their favour more than any other band were poetry and rhythm. It's rarely straightforward, it's intricate and syncopated, rooted in musical influences that didn't adhere to generic boundaries. So you will hear elements of blues and soul and funk and jazz alongside the familiar hard rock elements. This comes through especially in Phil Lynott's vocal delivery which some people have found hard to accommodate when compared with the likes of Halford or Dickinson. Brian Downey is one of the outstanding rock drummers of any era, maybe the best all-rounder outside the session studio. There were several links between Thin Lizzy and Rainbow. Phil Lynott and Ritchie Blackmore rehearsed together when Ritchie was toying with the idea of leaving Deep Purple. Gary Moore frequently collaborated with Rainbow drummer, Cozy Powell, bassist Bob Daisley and keyboard player, Don Airey. Another Rainbow bass player, Jimmy Bain, formed a band with Thin Lizzy's Brian Robertson called Wild Horses.

I would argue that one of the things that made Lizzy great is that everyone in the band was given their share of the spotlight; lots of bands treat the drum and bass sections as "supporting sections" that aren't as important as lead guitar and vocals, whereas Lizzy mixed it up and some songs were clearly designed to showcase the drums, some to showcase the base, etc. For example Bad Reputation is obviously built around the drums and just letting Downey strut his stuff. To a larger extent, as you mention, they played around with genres in a way that just felt like "this band is having fun". So everyone got to strut their stuff and do every genre they had even a passing interest in. Every band should be like this.

Also, saw them live on their farewell tour, played the local dance hall in my hometown, Phil wanted to hit all the old spots they used to play starting out!

Oh and another thing that made Lizzy such a special band - their guitar work is so melodic and memorable, their solos so memorable whereas so many bands solo work is all technique and speed, which counts for nothing in the long run. Lizzy made every note count. Brian Robertson is the king of the wah wah pedal and Scott Gorham was the most melodic soloist in my book, his style was like skipping stones across the water. Tie that in with a drummer - Brian Downey who played with real "swing" and a front man in Phil Lynott who just oozed charisma from every pore, then you come to realise why they were so so good. And Phil wasn't a knuckle dragging metalhead, he was an extremely articulate individual who could write a story and fit it into a three minute song. He could be a romantic, or a rocker or a crooner or any number of characters and his lyrics drew you into a world only Thin Lizzy wrote about in such a way that made them stand out as unique. And they were unique in ways bands like Iron Maiden weren't. Even Bon Jovi stole from them. John Bon Jovi heard Cowboy Song (a song you've yet to hear) and realised two things; 1. The subject was immensely evocative. 2. Lizzy were no longer around. So he pinched the subject lock Stockland barrel and wrote Dead or Alive, all thanks to the wordsmith that embodied Phil Lynott. But who knows Nick? Not many so do them a favour and keep digging with Live and Dangerous amd also the albums Jailbreak, Johnny The Fox, and even Vagabonds of The Western World. Also, tune into the lyrics because the band wrote the music based around Phils subject matter. They were all entwined and the music reflected the lyrics. Such a good lesson to learn. So get your spade and start work. I promise you it will be worth it.

Everyone has her/his own Lizzy favourites. If you consider Lizzy Marathon part two I've got some recommendations. First of all "The Rocker" with Eric Bell on guitar. "Rocky" with Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham on guitars. "Rosalie/Cowgirl's Song" (a live version from Live And Dangerous) with Robertson and Gorham on guitars. "Killer On the Loose" with Snowy White and Gorham on guitars. "Cold Sweat" (a live version from Life) with John Sykes and Gorham on guitars and "Thunder And Lightning" (a live version from Life) with Sykes and Gorham on guitars. These are not the most popular and obvious ones of their songs but deserve more attention.

There are DOZENS of other Thin Lizzy songs you need to hear at some point but this was a great cross-section of their most acclaimed period. Thanks so much Nick for putting in the request, I didn’t listen to these guys much at all until 3 or 4 years ago but I was blown away when I started diving into their stuff and now they’re one of my favourite bands ever! In my opinion the next song to check out has to be Emerald, it’s not a long song but so epic and awesome. And finally, I have to implore you, Nick, to listen to some more Wishbone Ash soon. They were doing the dual harmonized guitars even before Thin Lizzy! Another amazing band IMO, I would suggest “Phoenix”, “The King Has Come” or “Persephone”. Thanks Nick! 🤘🤘

Great 💯🎸🎶😎I ha a close friendship with Phil since early 81 thru my friend and drummer Mark Nauseef from New York - Nov. 85 when I saw and stayed with him in his house in Richmond/London for 1 week and sadly in the the first days of 86 a phone call reached me in L.A. that he is in hospital and some days later past away... I was totally shocked... I knew about his bad habbits but never thought that the addiction was so heavy massive! Miss you like crazy my friend! R. I. P

Nick, when people say referring to harmonics "Maiden thirds" it should have been called "Lizzy thirds" because these guys did it before them. There is still so much from them you have to find. Listen, they were regarded as the best live rock band around. Nobody but nobody wanted Lizzy as their support band because they were so awesome live, which is why you need to do yourself a favour and check out their live album - Live and Dangerous - which us still in many quarters regarded as the best live rock album of all time. Go there and you will then understand why Lizzy were so respected and feared as a live act because in their pomp no one could touch them as even bands like Queen discovered when they made the fatal mistake of having them open for them on tour - never again! So check it out because they truly deserve to be discovered by a new generation. On there are some outstanding live cuts that will blow your socks off inc Warriors, Johnny The Fox Massacre, Emerald, The Rocker, Still In Love With You. The list is endless. Soak it up. There is still so so much more from them to come.

Hey Nick .. another Nick here .. I queued overnight in the snow in Bradford ('78 or '79) to see Thin Lizzy. Tickets cost £2.60 I think - about $3 .. It snowed heavily so we built a snowman on the pavement - in the morning a policeman tried to kick it down but nearly broke his foot as the snow was packed around a milk crate. Great memories - The gig a few months later was awesome - the band were on fire that night and it counts as one of my favourite ever gigs (i'm over 60 now) You must listen to Emerald - a superb example of two guitarists playing off each other perfectly. There are some connections between Ritchie Blackmore and Thin Lizzy. Blackmore actually wanted to start a band with Phil Lynott, the bass player and lead singer in TH , in 1972, in a time when Blackmore was considering leaving Deep Purple. As it turned out Blackmore would not leave DP until three years later. But I believe that Thin Lizzy would warm up for Rainbow on some occasions , when Blackmore had left DP

Nice selection of Thin Lizzy, love 'em all but almost no one ever listens / reacts to Scott Gorham's Ballad of a Hard Man one of my favorites, plus Bad Rep, Opium Trail and the rippin Chinatown. I'd say Thin Lizzy are at least in part metal. They have some REALLY badass songs with tons of swagger. They groove, but songs like "Ballad of a Hard Man" prove that they could also hit hard. However, they're also a very bluesy band, and quite funky. They've also got the celtic folk influence. Thin Lizzy were truly unique, I'd recommend you to check out their discography. They haven't made bad albums.

You really need to check out Emerald, Warriors, Rocker, Cold Sweat and Killer On The Loose just to name a few bad ass songs. Also check out Live And Dangerous album set if you want to hear the best Thin Lizzy lineup. It's one of my favorite Live albums ever and I'm 62.

So glad you did this. Maybe you could go deeper and explore early stuff. Please dont compare to Maiden, Priest and that genre, Lizzy is simply different from the NWOBHM. Lizzys last album were somewhat comparable but still uniqely Lizzy. Not gonna rant, just listen to Lynotts solo stuff and Thin Lizzy mark 1 to get a full picture of the legend.🤘

You're actually not wrong when saying you thought Don't Believe a Word was a ballad. Former, at that time, and later Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore recorded Don't Believe a Word in 1978 on his own album Back On the Streets with Phil Lynott on bass and vocals plus Brian Downey on drums. Gary did a slower version kinda like ballad as you said and on the 1983 live album Life they the slow Gary version. Black Rose is my favorite Lizzy song and it's what i call "best of Ireland"! What i mean is the melody is a mix of different old traditional Irish folk tunes and the lyrics are traditonal irish histories. Towards the end he's mentioning different Irish like culture personalities like Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, James Joyce, Van Morrisson.

The amazing Thin Lizzy, the Phil Lynott biography is really fascinating (Cowboy Song).Please check out UFO who were contemporaries of Thin Lizzy with the equally amazing Michael Schenker on guitar. Ideally do a marathon from their 'Strangers In The Night' album (Love To Love, Lights Out, Rock Bottom and pretty much anything else)

Very good song choices. But I have to add that there is a live version of "Opium Trail" which clearly outshines the a little too well-behaved studio version. Every friend of a punchy Les Paul Standard sound should listen to it. For many years it mysteriously wasn't included on the earlier editions of the "Live and Dangerous" live album.

Yep, there sure is other things to listen to by Thin Lizzy. From Vagabonds of the Western World there is ***"The Rocker"*** - don't get suckered in to listening to the radio edited version, also from the same album the slow balled "Little Girl Bloom" is worth a listen. Then the title track "Jailbreak" is definitely worth a listen. Another slow / bluesy with a hint of reggae tune I think is worth a listen would be "Showdown". (Oh Yeah) "Dedication" is worth a listen, in my opinion.

Thin Lizzy is no more. Sadly, bass player and singer Phil Lynott is no longer with us. However, former members continued touring on occasion. Out of this touring a band named Black Star Riders emerged. The guys wanted to make new music but did not want to do anything to under the name Thin Lizzy out of respect for Phil. So now after four hard rocking albums and a fifth on the way, Black Star Riders continues with the Thin Lizzy sound and they do it well. IMO, great new hard rocking music that reminds you just enough of Thin Lizzy, but updated and different. Check out Black Star Riders.

Before I start listening, I'd like to say, that I have 10 of their first 11 studio albums and I'm excited, which songs were chosen by "the other Nick" 🙂 Well, 40 minutes later I have to say, good choice, even though there are so many other great tracks on all albums and the "crown" of their work is Live and Dangerous

"Bad Reputation" is my all time fave Lizzy song. Everything about it is perfection, the syncopated drums, the RIFFS and soloing! And bass lines from the late-Phil Lynott, perfect voice from him too. I've always wanted to make a Metal cover it, just heavier but keep all the elements that made it great because the drums and the riffs were outstanding. "Foo Fighters" did a cool cover, it just needed to be heavier. My 2nd would be "Johnny the Fox meets Jimmy the Weed", very funky and hard rockin'. Love the "Irish" military and traditional riffs in "The Black Rose", and you can hear its Gary Moore (reminds me of his album "Wild Frontier"). You'll have to checkout Gary's Heavy Rock/Metal years Nick, before he went full Blues :). - Awesome Marathon Set! :D

The Allman Bros. also had their trademark 2 guitar harmony sound from 1969, but they used it mainly on the main riffs, and sometimes they were an octave apart.

A 'criminally underrated band' is one of the most overused, criminally overrated comments I see regarding Thin Lizzy. Maybe underrated in the US but well appreciated in the UK, Europe, Japan and most of the English speaking world. They had some incredibly bad luck when it came to touring the US but I'm pretty sure they would've been huge there too if everything had come together, as planned. I was into punk in the late 70s and 80s, but always loved the Lizzy stuff I heard on the radio, for some reason. I couldn't admit that to my mates as I would've got the piss taken outta me relentlessly as we weren't supposed to be into 'longhair' stuff. Luckily managed to get a ticket for the 'Thunder&Lightning/Farewell tour' gig in my city and had to make excuses as to why I wouldn't be 'coming out to play' that night. It was well worth all the cloak & dagger shenanigans as it's one of the most memorable gigs I've ever attended, and I've been to squillions! I did get found out afterwards as I was spotted by a mates sister who was also there. I must've stood out like a sore thumb with my green hair and tartan bondage trousers amongst the 2500 longhairs clad in denim and leather! Phil was a brilliant front man. I'd never witnessed anyone engaging with the crowd like him before, singing a line then getting us to 'sing' it back to him. It was obvious he was loving it as much as us. They did 3 encores. A wee while later I saw him in a tiny wee club with his Grand Slam thing. They did a few Lizzy numbers, some of his solo stuff and some interesting covers. Not too long after that I remember my Da came into my bedroom to wake me up with the news that Phil had died. A sad day. Fuck me! What a pile of waffle! I better stop before I write my autobiography! Only came to say Thin Lizzy were fucking magic!

Dont Believe A Word: Listen to the original arraignment on the LIFE LIVE album. It was written as a ballad. Because Bell quit is why Lynott hired 2 guitarists so he wouldn't get short again. They pioneered the twin lead guitar format that bands like Iron Maiden copied and blew up!🤘🏻
