The "Edvard Thing" animatronic at work on set at Pinewood Studios Toronto, 2010. This footage takes you through prep and rehearsal, then finally through multiple takes with actor Eric Christian Olsen. Apologies for all the "bleeps"... after all, we're a Fx#@ing family channel.

God, imagine being an actor and knowing that this is merely a prop, but, even so, having to experience that grimy, grotesque figure with such unsettlingly human characteristics clamber all over your body and then press right up against your cheek, staring into its merciless, lustful gaze. +uderzo1984 From what I see in the movie, they DID use this awesome practical effect. They just enhanced with with some CGI to add the moving legs of the creature (which would be very, very hard to do well as a practical effect), and to show the actual merging of the faces. There is a legend going around that "originally they planned to do everything with practical effects but then they lazily CGI-ed over everything", but that is clearly untrue. What we see in the movie is a mostly successful blend of practical effects and CGI.

@tylerdurden5303
@tylerdurden5303 8 лет назад
For a long time I thought that this movie sucked because of the director. Turned out it was the studio's fault. The director submitted a workprint version of The Thing with practical effects and no CGI, but the execs decided that it looked "too '80s" and chose to go with CGI instead. Huge mistake! The decision screwed them over, the director hasn't directed a film since, and we fans never got to see a proper prequel.

I wonder what would have been the actor's reaction to this animatronic model that looks like him, making this kind of face. I would be awed and freaked out at the same time. Honestly, I would like to see a practical animatronic head of myself but in a more terminator style or I don't know maybe turned into a dead space necromorph.

The comparison is already well known, But I gotta say, I saw this in the actual film and thought “well, that’s kinda neat.” And just forgot about it. Seeing it here, I honestly tensed up. The closer it got to his face was chilling. Each take my mind just went “Oh god no!!” I’m so sorry the film industry is run by people who don’t understand film and only listen to the algorithm. This was almost an amazing tribute and perfect double feature to John Carpenter’s film.
