why shouldnt sloops be able to get away? eveyone else can. Just put it back how it was. that WAS balanced. EVERYONE could get away. You are just braindead like rare.

Ok, hear me out: 1: Take one of the storms and make it more “exciting” to be in and less “annoying” to be in (see my ideas further below if interested). 2: Eliminate the second storm. Instead, make TWO “storm-sized-areas” that are “calm water” areas which move around the map just like the storms do. 3. The waves within these two “calm water” areas are just like the water around islands. 4: If these calm water areas collide as they’re moving around the map, the overlapping area has reduced wind speed and completely flat water. 1Extras: A) either reduce the severity of the wheel turning, or add a rope to lock the wheel in place. B) increase the wind speed and the overall boat speed to create a more exciting (wave-jumping) ride through the storm. C) In place of the aggressive steering wheel, just make the water fill your boat up faster - especially when you fly off one wave and crash down into/under the next wave.

They have the thieves part down lol. Please it's hard to be sneaky. They show your mermaid ez to spot and the sounds when you swim alone has got me killed before I get to the ship even when swimming under the water. And the water merging sound terrible. They seriously need to change how hard it is to be sneaky in this game. Then they can call it sea of thieves. Right now it's just a cluster of salty toxic pirates who ambush you when on a Mission and run for hours when you come back to get your loot back.

I feel like sloops should be faster since they our outgunned in terms of canons. Less sails to catch the wind, sure. But they are also smaller and lighter.

Above all sloops are easier to bilge. The cannon advantage is somewhat mitigated on bigger ships once they have a few holes and need to divert manpower to keep them afloat.

IDEA ALERT: Perhaps maybe some more dynamic oceans are in order. What if there was... Whirlpool, Maelstrom, rogue waves, waterspouts, towering Waters, Tsunami, Riptides and tides? 🌀Whirlpool: getting caught in one of these drastically changes the direction where your ship is moving and puts your vessel in a spin. It will also gradually damage your ship the more you stay in it. The smaller the vessel, the more trapped in the vortex you will be. If your pirate fails to stay above the surface while caught in the vortex, they will begin drowning immediately. Before reaching the middle and instantly dying and being sent to the fairy the Damned. 🕳️Maelstrom: A much more open basin Whirlpool that might have some valuable shipwrecks swirling around it. To effectively move around, this massive funnel, ships need to match the movement of the tide and effectively " surf" To effectively get out, Or sink to the bottom where you will effectively pop out somewhere else in the world at random with a random amount of water filled in your ship without damage. 🌊Rogue Waves: towering waves that will knock your ship around and inflict heavy damage unless you're able to face the the wave head on. 🌪️Waterspouts: sea tornadoes. Comes in three tiers. Each tier bigger than the last And more deadly. Tier 1 Will manipulate the nearby winds. Tier 2 will include pulling, treasure and pirates off of their ship and swirling them around before hurling them somewhere else. Tier 3 includes the latter and also The possibility of PICKING UP YOUR SHIP. All tears of water spouts will have debris being hurled around. Sometimes they'll be loot inside of the tornado, but most of the time it's barrels, cannonballs, cannons, anything that could inflict massive damage to you or your ship if you are unlucky enough to get hit by it. ⛲Towering waters: In certain areas, waves and Waters will vary in size and Cascade. Sometimes ships will have to " climb" at an angle To take advantage of the height difference. 🏄Tsunami: A massive wave event that will Target Islands at random. For example, let's say that you are on wanderers refuge doing pirate stuff. You begin. He arranged some dramatic music, And then the Beach shore water suddenly begins to pullback. Then you see a towering tidal wave incoming. It's slow, and there's a lot of time to prepare, You would have to "Surf" This Wave to either its ends on your ship to successfully survive it without damage. Fail to do so, and your ship will take massive damage and you will be sent to the ferry the Damned if you're caught in the break of the wave. Additionally, the island it was targeting will be flooded temporarily. 🏊Riptides: found in between the calm of Island Waters, and open sea, riptides Are kind of like speed boosters with an attitude. Sail on these directly to gain a slingshot speed boost in the direction it faces. Pirates caught in the riptide however will always go under and take damage. 🚣Tides: imagine you were at reaper's hideout, you're trying to cash in, and you suddenly hit that stupid sand bank that you always forget is there because it's always just below the water surface. In the instance of low tide, you'd be able to see more of the island's typography. The contrary, during high tide, more of the island will be covered.

I think speed should be much more dynamic so the galleon starts at a snails pace but after some time moving you pick up momentum and start to go really fast, but then the sloop can get to its max speed almost right away

One thing I always wished sot had is tides, I think it would be cool to have to adjust your angle of approach based on the time of day, plus it would add a touch more depth.

Interestingly. The game was intended to have a tide cycle. But was canned before release. This is why you get some underwater areas that look at though they could be traversed on foot. It was the intention to have islands appear depending on the tide cycle.

I just hope going with the wind won't be so much slower on a sloop compared to the others. Sailing around in a sloop is a pain for that reason.

Yes, yes, yes. I have been saying since launch (years before the Brigantine) that drift, ballast, tacking and even just semi-realistic wind physics should be a thing. I mean, it’s sailing that sets this game apart. Nothing else. Maybe add some anchors too? Duh!

I mean if the sloop is slow enough to joke about being 20 mins behind the other ships maybe it needs a speed boost. I do like your change ideas though. Maybe they should add maelstroms and whatnot too that would give a speed boost as you went into it. Another comment said something about reefs and sandbars and stuff that only sloops could go over and that would be fun too I think. Sloops do need something to happen. Its really impossible to play right now as a solo slooper. I can't leave my first port without looking behind me and seeing another ship who is willing to chase me for an hour even though I have nothing. Why would I want to play the game if I can't even play the game.

If you have nothing. Either leave the server, or fight. Before you say "I owe nobody a fight". You're on high seas, you automatically sign up for pvp. Whether you want it or not.

​@@mountainrogue3448no, I hop on high seas and I'm aware that pvp is something that may occur. However, that does not mean that I have to fight. It is my choice to run or fight, just as it's their choice to chase or leave me alone. If we didn't have a choice in the matter then we wouldn't have alliances and we would just have an automatic pvp zone that spawns around us when a ship gets close

Very much a needed concept in the game. I've always liked the idea of the sea flowing in more than one direction. Like the wilds having wild currents and, thus, choppy waters, or the shores of plenty having lots of calm waters, but the storms are more violent. Something other than "the waves go southeast and also there's a raincloud".

I also say that sloops should have areas to tuck underneath and sneak through terrain. Anyone remember threading the needle at Sunken Grove? A good example of a smaller, more maneuverable ship handling the islands better. Perhaps the brigantine with its flatter hull and long shape could be slowed down less by keelhauling a sandbar, and be more resistant to terrain damage. Where sloops and Galleons have to avoid beaching themselves, a speedy brig can jump the sand and keep going.

The way I’d do balancing would add a keg dropper kinda like the ghost ships have . Would force ships to not just dash forward and would give a sloop an edge

It was good when a mega insta-sunk any ship. After the nerf the Sloop has always been the bullied child of SoT that everyone could safely abuse without any danger. Exceptions only proofing the rule as usual.

or just go back to how it was before when every ship had a way to excape if they wanted. Since that was already balanced. They are trying to fix a problem they themselves made for no reason at all but to cater to angry 12 year olds who were upset they couldnt abuse their 4v1 advantage to make the game unplayable for solos. Which is why i quit now that it is.

I just wish the ship speeds remained the same, except slow the brig a wee bit and fix its godawful sights from the wheel. I play almost exclusively as either a galleon or duo sloop player, and the ridiculous speed that the brig has is offensive! On the other hand, watching this mid vessel flying at you in crosswind is bonkers, and gives me a good laugh.

I kinda like this idea, giving more effects on ships from water to bring a better balance to the game would be an interesting way to rebalance the ship situation, possibly some new weather and water effects would be a nice addition as well to keep things interesting on the water beyond the storm and sea monsters and skellie ships. However, I still think some adjustments to how wind effects ships should be done still, ignoring that it had been changed and dramatically giving one ship a larger advantage over others is a pretty glaring problem and should be addressed directly regardless.

Still new mechanics to the ocean to make life more interesting on the water beyond just "oh joy, a %$#@ing kraken/skelly ship/meg... again" would be a nice breath of fresh air, but honestly there are quite a lot of existing content that hasn't been updated in ages that is overdue for an update to catch it up to the rest of the game

I agree. The weather needs an overhaul in this game. The sloop also needs a bit more health I think as a galleon or brig can fire 2 or 3 times the cannons. I've been in a sloop many of times where you just can't out run anything

I feel the sea needs a big update in general. More animals like whales, dolphins, turtles, whirlpools, a tide system, a new sea monster, more things to find than shipwrecks and floatsoms. I hope Rare is thinking about this and I would love if they overhauled the sea in season 15, after the burning blade and stealth mechanics.

ship turning radius should always be consistant or else controlling your ship would feel very clunky for the vast majority of players. Sloops have dummy sails as a mechanic to make their operation easier due to their reduced crew size I think they just need to slowdown brig when against the wind and its 'balanced enough' Something you didn't outright mention is how having the advantage for crosswind means the speed advantage in 2 different directions. Whereas against the wind or downwind is just a 1 direction advantage.

I personally don´t mind the turning against the wind and wave goodbye. If someone REALLY dosen´t wanna be near you. You can just change server. It is unreasonable to not give solo players AKA sloops a get out of jail or in this case get out of an unnessecary 2 hours chase free card.

Something I've been saying for ages that should be added to the game is wakes. I think adding wakes could really add interesting dynamics to the world and to sailing and ship speed in general, as well as adding some awesome realism. Crossing over another ship's wake, especially a recent one, could seriously impact a ship's speed, effectively acting like an oceanic speed bump. Galleons would leave massive wakes, while sloops leave tiny ones. Imagine a sloop or brig getting caught in the wake of a galleon and careening over it like it's gone over a ramp, or maybe even forcing the wheel to turn in the direction of the wake. Also, slip streams could be a thing, allowing smaller ships to follow bigger ones and take advantage of the speed boost. I think it could make sailing in the game really dynamic and way more interesting!

Feel like adding ocean currents would make the ocean more dynamic and level the playing field a bit, like corner mappable currents that change in intensity and pattern with each region

Does each ship accelerate to max speed (no wind boost) within the same timeframe? If not, perhaps the sloop can do so the fastest, giving it a chance to not get immediately overtaken by the galley or brig that's rushing toward them while the sloop is parked at an island. Would also help in situations where both ships are hit by anchor balls, giving the sloop an advantage in the recovery aspect.

The galleon would need to be the best in the storm for your fix to make sense. Longer vessels fair better in rough seas as they are long enough to spam across the length of two waves.

I wish that they'd make it harder to give sloops 2nd and 3rd tier holes, having 1 cannon per side, is a huge disadvantage. And usually when fixing while fighting a larger ship, is essentially pointless, because at the point i fix a hole, there is either 3 or 5 new tier 2 / 3 holes, and I sink.

Cursed cannon balls are awesome. Go to small islands and hope the skele captain will give a voyage that digs up a storage crate. The storage crates are guaranteed curse cannon balls. I solo sloop all the time. Its great for us solo players.

I would love a realistic sailing system that takes skill. Then if you catch someone/manage to get away is about who is better at sailing instead of who has the faster boat. Having the sail move in it's own when you tack or jibe would be sick. The fastest route wouldn't always be the direct one. Tacking to get a better angle on the wind would add more depth. And sail management would mabey even be less hassle because on real boats you set how far the boom can swing and then it just does it's thing depending on the wind direction. I would love for the helm to have something more interesting to do

Honestly, the sloop needs to be some amount faster. Not even for PVP balance, but because it takes forever to sail from point A to point B in a sloop. Then when you get to where you're going, it takes longer to finish what you're doing because you have a smaller crew. Playing on a sloop significantly slows your rate of progress because of that.

It sounds great but I see that the problem is that some ships will end up with I speed advantage in more scenarios. For example the one faster in open ocean would be faster the most as most of the map is open ocean. Meanwhile wind direction offers a way to escape no matter where you are. This needs to be the case as new crews don’t have a chance against veteran ones so they need that simple out to give them a chance. The devs got pretty close to reality with the current boat speeds. But if we want to revamp it I say more crew means a slower boat, it plays to the strengths associated with the crew. Small crews have to play smart and more passively to win the day while big crews need to overwhelm smaller crews by playing aggressively and fast.

Having the dynamic seas is interesting idea, but I can't help but wonder that can the game engine handle all that information? Because it can barely handle 6 crews on the same servers, without the game turning into rubber band simulator.

I want tides as well. The ocean level goes up and down on a 7hr in game cycle between three states, low, mid and high. Certain areas become passable for certain ship types.

I think the waves are to chaotic for normal winds. Storm fair enough but it's a bit annoying when ur in supposedly good weather but ue boat is jumping out of the water

my understanding is waves affect boats very differently per boat type and would reverse some of these 'wind only' scenarios in certain cases

In heavy waves the galleon is always the fastest. In storm waves every ship slows to a crawl. Though if you are sailing perpendicular to the waves (heavy or calm) the sloop gets pushed around the least. There is probably a bit more to it then that but that is what I've seen in my experience

Idk about the brig being faster against wind, I'm still able to pull away in a sloop against wind, hasn't ever changed

Sloop should have always been way faster to conpensate for how harder it is to pvp against a larger crew. I have never lost a single non-hourglass fight against a sloop while on a galleon, and only a handful of times on a brig

I absolutely agree that the brig is the fastest ship, but I'm a believer that that's about all it has going for it, so it should remain the fastest. It's the only ship where every hit it takes will be a lower deck, it doesn't allow you to have your entire crew firing on the same side like the galley, and it's the hardest ship to harpoon loot off of in a timely fashion.

I agree with everything in this video. You could also put in a weight portion to it. More weight going up a wave slows but speeds up going down. And vice versa. With the brig being middled. Now if they would actually make this happen id come back and play......but im still waiting till it does. If it doesn't i will never play it again. And that doesn't bother me.

well they should put the map on a globe, and make it so you cant sail directly upwind at all. waves should do damage to smaller ships, having sails unfurled in a storm should wreck your mast, your ships weight should affect your speed

I totally agree that they don't need to nerf the ships. But I believe they should change the seas. There are no currents. There is no change in the way the water behaves in each ocean. It always flows one direction. Sailing skill is a factor in ship strategy but as the helmsman, the sea offers no challenge to sail. And there is no joy in sailing because of this. I believe they need to add more Variety to the sea's behavior so the crew needs to know more about the sea to function as a proper crew. But I truely do love the effort the crew at rare has put into to make sailing as realistic as they have. It's amazing how they have set the ships movement to respond so accurately to the ways. I can't wait to see the seas change and grow.

Hear me out: wind changes speed and isn’t always the same speed everywhere, with areas of extremely calm air, where ships are becalmed and almost immobile, no waves, and probably some other effects, as well as areas of higher wind that makes ships go faster, higher waves, and probably something like damage to Masts

Weird. Either ALL the brigs that try to catch my sloop are terrible (which statistically speaking is unlikely) or something's afoot here, because a Sloop against the wind IS faster than a Brig against the wind in my experience.

We do not need a dramatic overall to sailing physics not every game needs hyper realism to be fun. The reworks to most live service games is what eventually kills then for me due to them never feeling like the same game update to update. I genuinely may never return to this game if sailing physics are too overhauled.

I just wish the sloop is the most useless thing now, but only available if you want to be alone whoch i rather enjoy, there should be a slowness affect the waves create to make it a difference depending on the scenario while the sloop being decently able to get away

I feel they should make the ships behave as they would in the real world. Turning your sails hard left to catch starboard wind is a dangerous thing to do. 45° to side wind will actually make you travel faster than the wind due to lift. Full left or right sails (plus tacking) is advantageous when traveling into the wind. Making the sailing more realistic would both allow sailors to translate their irl skills into the game as well as educate players on how sailing actually works; and it would make sense.

Do brigs really outrun sloops into the wind? I am sure I have outrun them before - maybe they had their sails wrong. If it’s true the sloop has no chance.

i really think its time for rare to consider ship modification. I understand every thinks 'oh then rich players would sweep' but combat is stale when the capabilities of all the ships are the same every time. I think its a good idea to have upgrades for ships that include drawbacks for balancing, so veteran players cant just stack upgrades and be god. I had a couple ideas for it: Hardened Timber: Increased damage required to create holes Reduces ship speed Light Sails Reduces time to handle sails (raise/lower+turning) Lower speed in head wind I think it could easily be balanced and end up creating 'builds' and have more diversity in the combat while not handing free stats to veteran players

Unfortunately this would most likely just create a other meta. People will figure out what is the best upgrades combo and never play anything else. I wish it would work but you can easily see that in multiple other games where people have hundreds of build possibility but everyone play almost the same build (like destiny for exemple)

@@JustinSimoneau okay, so you content it's not worth developers to give gamers options because they naturally optimize things. Ofc there would be a "meta" but that doesn't mean every single ship would run it. At worst with upgrades: everyone runs the meta build and we are back to square one with every ship being the same. At best it creates options for different playstyles or builds, and normally despite the existence of a meta players will deviate frome it for more enjoyable builds or to experiment.

So this comment does have nothing to do with the Video but i found something strange. in one of your older videos you showed that the Reaper spyglass has a secret if you look at Ghosts in the Legends Hideout you can see how they looked as the were alive. But here's the thing i found if you use the Phantom spyglass and look at a flames of the candels in the Legends Hideout they change coulor and if you put it away the spyglass the flemes extinguish bevore shortly after igniting. I think this is al litle strange.

heres the change they will make. "go eff yourself" thats what they have been telling sloop players since launch. Not only do other ships have a numbers advantage, but now you cant get away no matter what and so you're just basically an npc to be grinded by players in other ships at this point in a sloop.

I think the idea you presented in the video is very interesting, but there's one concern I have about this idea: most of the map is open waters, which would lead to people asking themselves "What's best for open waters combat/traversal?" (if they're playing without friends) and sticking to that. Storms and flat waters are a bit too situational. But if there were regular changes to the world that would change water types on open water to be better for a specific ship, I think it would work, tho it would suck to be running away on a sloop from a galleon, when suddenly the water changes from flat to open seas and they catch up to you. Still, a very interesting video!

As a sloop fight defensively. Jump off and board their boat or sail near an fortress and use their cannons. You will be sunk sometimes but that's ok. I say this as someone who mainly solo sloops
