I don't take it as a "Gimme, gimme!!". It sounds like a "I wish I could afford this for my students, but I need help." Teachers are way underpaid!!

Edit: The change of schedule sounds great! i hope it works it does seem better planned out then before. So being honest as a student i would rather change classrooms rather than the teacher switching rooms. it gives me a break and time to get up move around and not be in the same room for a very long time. I understand its probably easier for you teachers to move but i always preferred to actually move myself...
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary 5 лет назад
Our students do change classes throughout the day... from homeroom to cultural arts, back to homeroom, to block 1, to lunch, to block 2, to recess, back to block 2, back to homeroom, and then to their dismissal room. Switching classes for science and social studies was just an extra transition that was not needed. First of all, we only have 40 minutes for science/social studies. We were wasting 5 minutes getting settled at the beginning and then 5 minutes switching at the end. Plus, students would forget materials and waste time going back (plus interrupting that class) to get them. It was also disruptive to nearby classes that were in the middle of instruction when our students were changing classes. Our students also had to keep track of which room to go to since we switch weekly and it was difficult for them to remember. It is better for our students if the teachers switch classes instead of them.

About the desk and table being removed from your room without you knowing: You’re right. It is not a big deal, but I have to say the underlying disrespect of not letting teachers know before removing things from their rooms might be a big deal. About your change in schedule : How were you able to change your lunch and recess schedule without impacting the total school schedule?
@PocketfulofPrimary
@PocketfulofPrimary 5 лет назад
Our administration actually suggested the schedule change because they knew it would benefit our students. Our lunch now overlaps a little with another grade level but there are enough tables in the cafeteria to accommodate all of the students! The recess change actually works better because we used to share our recess time with another grade level but now we have it at our own time!

Instead of having a funeral for Pluto, I think you can save him! Firstly, the black traps may be completely normal, each trap has a lifespan of just a few months and doesn't mean the actual plant is dying! Is there new growth? Is he just going into a dormant period for the winter? You and the class could research his symptoms and see how to better take care of him - does he need a better pot with more drainage (make sure to research the best time of year to repot)? Are his roots sitting in damp soil often? Does he have the right environment? Is he getting fed the right nutrients (I actually don't think carnivorous plants need fed at all, the need nutrient-poor soil)? It could be a fun activity and so satisfying to have him go green and happy again!

I just wanted to say that I've truly tried wrapping my mind around how to implement Flexible Seating into my 4th grade classroom and until you showed your plan, I was at a loss. But the progression of high to low seating just makes sense. THANK YOU for being willing to share these ideas. I KNOW this is something classes in my future will really benefit from. I'm going to start running these ideas by my admin. :)

Thank you so much Becky! I agree... I wasn't sure how it would work for me either until my administration gave us the "okay" to get rid of some desks. Then the idea of having the tiered seating popped into my mind and I was like "yessss!" I can't wait to see this fully implemented in my classroom and I hope you can do the same! Best of luck to you!

In elementary school, we had bouncy bands on the bottom of all of our chairs k-4th funded through a grant. They just stretch around the front two legs of chairs and kids can move their feet and fidget throughout the day. They were great and helped so much with concentration. And for the kids who didn't like them, they could just ignore them.

I'm in 10th grade and I would love if we had flexible seating cause sense we are older we don't get to go outside unless the teacher decides to have a free day which is never, I have ADD and some other stuff but it is to long to name but I move around so much it looks like I drank 20 cups of coffee but I am actually I'm extremely tired if we had flexible seating at my school I would be able to focus so much more cause I'm currently stuck sitting in those desks that the chair and the top of the desk is connected together and the surface is so small and I'm sitting down all day and the seats are so hard that it has cause me to have terrible back pain and I am only 15 (almost 16) but my school decides to spend it on things that we don't need or what the teachers what then spending money on the students to make going to school be more enjoyable

Your doorbell ( 10:45 ), do you use that as an attention getter to bring the class back together? I've been trying to find an idea that I like or feel comfortable enough bringing into a middle school classroom. I was thinking of a bellhop/hotel type bell, but if I'm able to wear a buzzer and walk around the room with it, that's a great idea! Also, the kids won't be messing with it!

@philbeer314
@philbeer314 5 лет назад
I like the idea of flexible seating in the classroom. For a new teacher who is looking into it, how would you suggest implementing it. Would you start small like the small table that was in your library, or would you do something bigger like what you and your team teacher are moving to? If you did whole class like what you are moving to, how would you introduce it, especially at the beginning of the year? I think one of my worries, not teaching quite yet, is that there will be fighting over who gets what type of seat, and if that seat doesn't work out, then I don't have other options for them... I will totally look into your donor's choose and consider giving :)

The school I just completed my internship at has full flexible seating in all classrooms, no desks at all! Lessons are taught at the carpet but when they are working independently they get to choose where to sit in the classroom. My CT had a large sofa in the back of the room but also had a few different tables and types of seats (stools, bean bags, actual chairs, etc.). Students were responsible for choosing the spot they felt they could focus best in, and if it didn't work out CT had them move to a new spot. It worked really well for her energetic second graders! I'm excited to hear how flexible seating works in your classroom!

Hi Michelle The break in between will be good for them mentally. Class, break, and class study shows they do better concentrating and performing. Then sitting long time with no breaks. Change going be good for you and the student. Having no moving in 2 hours is going be hard to learn in my opinion. The flexible seating good alternative if you can’t have 15 min of recess every hour.

I implemented flexible seating into my classroom a few years ago after visiting a school that had flexible seating in every classroom. I spent a lot of time researching, planning and shopping for all the different options. I had my husband cut PVC pipe to slip onto the legs of the tables to make two tables higher. At those tables, I used grey IKEA bar stools with backs. I also had bean bags, rockers, grey and yellow backwards chairs from IKEA, regular desks and chairs, wobble chairs and crate seats. I went off work in October 2017 on medical leave because I needed surgery. I broke my shoulder on a class skating fieldtrip (and did a lot of damage to my arm and elbow and hand- torn ligaments and nerve damage.) I just recently returned to work on Dec. 3rd 2018 after more than a year off work. All my flexible seating was dispersed around the school into different classrooms. All I have left are my two wobble chairs. Some stuff was broken during my absence, some stuff was lost- how? I don't know!, and other stuff was "borrowed" and still has not been returned. Much of what I had was bought with my own $, or bought specifically for me by my old principal after the school visit I talked about earlier. (We do not have Donor's Choose projects here in Canada.) Teachers seem to have claimed my stuff as theirs in my absence. So I totally understand how you feel when your table was taken. Coming back, after such a long absence, has been very difficult physically and emotionally and I'm trying very hard to stay positive. It's like starting over again... But let me tell you, flexible seating was awesome. I will, one day, go back to it. Good luck setting up your classroom. I hope you and your students enjoy it too!

I love the idea of flexible seating. It’s a little difficult at the Secondary level because of our classrooms being needed for testing. But if I’m at least able to add some flexible options, some options are better than none!

I was a grad school intern at a school all last year and things were stolen from me every single day. I had to teach in the PTA room and those mothers hated me for it and between that and the lack of respect with stealing teachers it was a horrible year. Glad that school paid for my Master’s Degree but it was still a hellish year
