Can we start a "tea time talk" with a couple of random Q&A every week? Mine is, if we all watch you for our DIY fix, who do you watch. Or is yours like synchronised ice-skating to decompress? 😂

@0:10 "Tom is working on Southend which is a bit of a mess!"😂😂. I wont argue with that statement. Think it'll take him some time though.

Probably a bit late for you now, but we used Foamglas blocks as fractionally cheaper than Thermoblocks. Based in Bath if you wanted to come and look. But as an alternative, stick 25-50mm XPS/EPS insulation either side of your trenchblocks and that will give you the same or better if you can tie the insulation into your slab insulation. Remember thermal bridge details is about stopping the thermal short-cuts with structural elements, not necassirly cutting it completely.

Getting in the trench with no support to hold back a possible collapse was a little reckless.

Carpenter & Joiner here for 37yrs as soon as them grinder blades get frayed like that throw them away. As someone who had one snatch, pinch & bounce out into my leg it's not worth trying to save a couple of quid. I have seen them shatter as well once they get like that. Nearly every serious accident I seen over the years it's been caused by something silly or trying to save a couple of quid. You're correct about the trench blocks, they have a mortar bed bes & they lock together with no mortar joints in the perps.

Yeah that was well past it, they fray very quick on the web of those steels so not worth the risk. Was just waiting to get it in a vice to break it free to replace with a fresh one.

Hi Tim, For trench blocks, having watched 2 brickies do 60m in a couple of hours on our previous build, I'd do them myself if I had to. As for ICF, Nudura has an office in Ledbury - the guys there are nice and you never no, may do a feature.

Dropping a lump of concrete is a good reminder for hard hats, hi vis and when cutting steel, eye protection. You are so professional in many ways but you want to finish this with minimal accidents
@stum8374
@stum8374 4 месяца назад
I pretty sure Jo and kids don't even want minimal accidents but I concur with your sentiment.

Do you want a drain for the pool? Time to put a pipe under the footings now? Great videos. 👍🇬🇧
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 4 месяца назад
Yes we do, but still some build up to go in so plenty of room as the south pool wall is coming out completely. 👍

You might regret a pool, complete pita. Plus it's not very big ...

Have you looked into foamglass blocks for the trench blocks? They're insulating, structural and non-wicking as glass is inert. I've not used the foamglass blocks, but I used loose foamglass insulation below a hempcrete slab in a retrofit project, and found it so easy to work with, and so versatile that I have used the loose fill below the slab on two builds since. At the time I didn't know about the solid structural blocks, but now would use them in the future to get a complete insulation envelope combining the blocks and the loose fill - I always install underfloor heating so insulating the perimeter without bridging is vital.

Only seen the loose stuff to go below slabs so I will have a look at teh blocks. 👍

Not sure about a pool inside the house. Infact not sure a pool really fits in with the Restoration Couple ethos. . .

I’m not sure if it’s the sort of thing you’re looking for but I work for Ravago building solutions and we produce XPS insulation that is designed for use within your floor, and I have heard of it used in construction of swimming pools. Might be worth a google.

Hi Jo, does the new house have under roof garaging because the bat cave garaging idea is a whole heap cheaper than a pool and trust me a pool loses its appeal when the kids get to about 14

I'm not that familiar with building materials in the UK, but you could also look into 'perinsul' foamglass to mitigate thermal bridging at the foundation level ans then use regular blocks in conjunction

Nets should be pretty tight to the underside of the roof so shouldn't be a problem (Idea is to catch someone as soon as possible if the roof sheets crack.)

We are for the pool so will be talking with the supplier to see how it 'stacks up' against other options. 👍

It's all gone now as we decided to go with a suspended slab there now so thankfully not needed. Definitely plenty of shuttering needed around the place though.
