Things did not go well - Backpacking the Fred Haught Trail
Tina and I decided to slow things down a bit due to some recent setbacks; we drove to the White Mountains to backpack. Zero percent chance of rain and it poured all day. We drove to Utah to do a much larger backpacking trip and Tina didn't feel good. We figured it would be stupid to start a backpacking trip with her ill, so we ended up driving home without really hiking much of anything.
On top of this, I currently have a pretty debilitating shoulder injury. I'm fairly sure it's from sleeping on my shoulder, but that doesn't sound very badass. We'll just say it was from picking up a car off of a pedestrian or pulling a dog out of a house fire. Something like that. I'm not old, you're old.
Whatever happened, it hurts. We have some big trips coming up so we decided to do a mellow hike called The Fred Haught Trail as a test. If you don't know the Fred Haught Trail, it's one of several - Barbershop, Houston Brothers & U Bar - that form the Cabin Loop Trail system up on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. You can put together several different routes to backpack on this system of trails, so I did just that. Naturally, I came up with one of the more logistically challenging routes since a car shuttle was needed - but it worked. It also got us out on part of the Arizona Trail, which I haven't hiked much of. So that seemed like a good plan.
Things started wonderfully with sprinkling rain (again, zero percent chance) and went downhill from there. But we made it and the Fred Haught Trail was absolutely stunning, so I'm not going to complain much. That's a lie, but at least I won't be complaining to you, so you're all good there.
And yes, I actually thought that homemade filter was going to work. You seriously have no idea how many times I've yelled at people on Naked and Afraid about making a rock, sand and charcoal filter. An unhealthy amount of times, actually...I guess survival is harder than it looks from my couch. (I do need to upgrade to a mechanical filtration device. The All Clear is too limiting when it comes to silty water sources.)
Anyway, if you haven't hiked the Cabin Loop Trails, go check them out. You won't be disappointed.
Just watch your step.

I think sometimes it's when things don't go well that you realize how lucky you are - having the right person with you, knowing that you can adjust on the fly, still on a beautiful trail despite a bit of blood and bruising, etc. I hope that your injuries heal quickly and you & your wife get back to feeling 100%.

I did the same thing you did last Tuesday. I was on a hike and was admiring the forest I was in and not watching where I was going turned my ankle and fell except I didn’t face plant I cracked two ribs instead. Breathing now sucks and so does getting in and out of bed.

It seems to happen like that. A few years back the wife and I were hiking an awesome path with moderate boldering. We were waiting at a perfectly flat area (for some slow pokes to catch up) and a small rock tripped my wife. Shattered wrist, surgery, titanium plates, the whole works. Out of all the places to trip and fall, she picked the safest place on the whole trail. We often are fighting some injuries. Age sucks but we're not going down without a fight!

Ouch! It hurts the pride, but I guess the bright side is those embarrassing places are the best ones to get an injury. I've been plenty of places that would be an absolute nightmare to be hurt.

One of my favorite camping spots in arizona. I would stick trails closer the rim where you can access water from lake. I love this area because it’s so untouched, wild and you can find places to camp where you might not see a soul for days. But if you’re backpacking water will be difficult to find. It’s also stays very cool in the summers! Great place to escape the brutal summers in Phoenix

I absolutely love it up there. I've since gotten a mechanical filtration water purification system so I don't have to worry about water sources like we had on this trip. My UV purifier did good enough, but it doesn't filter particles out of the water so it won't make you sick, but you may have to chew your water. We go up there a few times every summer. Man, the monsoons can get out of hand up there though. I've had two different times where I was pretty sure I was going to get struck by lightning.

Did the Cabin loop years ago, we met a forest service lady on a horse cutting the tree blazes (and did inter loop Aspen Springs also) sad to see so many burnt trees. As you were going down the trail, it brought back memories. Keep on truckin' man, it good for the spirt. I turned my ankle REALLY bad running from a lighting storm ( you could smell the sulfur (smell) from the bolts) on a trail in the white Mt's and it caused a spur. Had it cut out, but now the 2 bones rub. My days on the trail have been over for awhile.😊 Enjoy your Video's

Ouch! That must have hurt both your pride and your face. Tina is my hero! I have several years on you and can no longer carry a heavy pack. My solution was to hike on a llama pack trip this year in Yellowstone (the company is based in Flagstaff). They carried 10 pounds of our personal gear which meant we only had to carry 12-15 pounds. The only issue with using llamas is that they don’t move very fast. We averaged a mile to a mile and a half per hour. My group of 10, plus 2 guides, had a blast anyway. My husband and I are planning a road trip in May, coming from NH, and will be back in CO, AZ and UT. We’ve been out there several times (we’ve done 3 rafting trips through the Canyon. Next year will be our 4th) and I’ll be looking to you both for lots of hiking options. My best to you both.

People looked at my husband for a few weeks thinking he did it to me but a darn rock did it! After a few years, my face has some extra wrinkles on it from the fall but at least I survived. Jerry, rocks are hard, I am concerned about the shoulder injury. Why, on January 17th of this year, I was in the Superstitions doing some landscape photography. I slipped on a rock and rolled into another big rock. I was cut up, broke two ribs, and injured my left shoulder. I didn’t have my trekking poles and I believe they would have prevented my fall. I had to walk 2.5 miles to get to my vehicle. Went to the ER that evening. Had X-rays and was advised to get an MRI on the left shoulder as the x-rays did not show much. I had the MRI as the shoulder was not feeling right. I had the MRI and it revealed that I had torn 3 of my 4 rotator cuffs and the tendon to my left bicep. I had surgery to repair the injury. Four months of PT and it takes 6 to 8 months to heal from this type of injury. I hope you do not have a rotator cuff injury. Rocks can hurt you. I know. Take care and keep on hiking. 👍👍

shoulders. Designed by a committee that didn't get along. From my personal experience (not a medical anything), I recommend therapies. Then if weeks (months?) of icing and graduating exercises don't result in pain relief and return of strength and confidence in using said shoulder, then consider surgery. Note: surgery does not guarantee 100% return to "normal". You want those limbs, joints, organs, etc.. to last and be functional for several decades yet. The best equipment we have to enjoy outdoor adventures is our bodies. Good luck.

It's much better to faceplant on an uneven sidewalk, as I managed to do a few weeks ago. Same distracted attention, and I delivered a lethal karate chop to an impassive slab of concrete -- and at a speed I wouldn't have thought possible. Only a bruised shoulder and soft tissue damage to the base of my ring finger, plus a little road rash to the pinky and wrist bone. No scraped knee -- proof positive that the junior high tumbling instruction I received was one of the high points of my schooling! FWIW, practicing step-ups and especially step-downs has done some good for my balance and strength. Can't say I'll ever jump around on the trail like days gone by -- but I'll be spending less energy being hypnotised by the scenery for sure!

All open stream and sitting water is questionable. Rudimentary McGiver filtering systems are never going to properly filter out pathogens and Cystics, so don't take a chance with your health. Negative long term issues could result. Boil water for several minutes or treat with Iodine, Bleach, or Hydrogen Peroxide, Halazone for 2-plus hours. 5 tablets of halazone for 1 qt (1 L) of water. Treat for 30 minutes before using the water. 1 Tbsp (15 mL) of crystalline iodine for 1 qt (1 L) of water. Treat for 30 minutes before using the water. 0.1 tsp (0.5 mL) (about 5 drops from an eyedropper) of 2% tincture of iodine for 1 qt (1 L) of water. Treat for 70 minutes to 8 hours before using the water. 2 to 4 drops (from an eyedropper) of household chlorine bleach for 1 qt (1 L) of water. Treat for 30 minutes before using the water. Iodine is considered to work better than chlorine against giardia.

you are out there in some rugged country, a lot ! its the odds ! you were due, could have been worse ! but it has been my experience i have gotten hurt when i am tired or just dont feel well. on april 1st down in mcdowell and biking on a trail i had rode a lpt over the winter. something felt weird, should have bagged it but i had a buddy going to. not 15 mins in i crashed on a turn, trail was a little sandy ! spent rest of day in the emergency room in scottsdale, partial seperation even with insurance i got a few bills from the emergency room during the summer. it actually healed pretty fast ! rooting for your recovery, is tina spoiling you ??????????

Hey Jerry, it’s nice to see you didn’t get hurt as bad as it could have been. I really look forward to your videos and if I get a chance in Feb, March I will be heading your way on a business trip. If you have time would love to meet up, maybe do a hike. If so I can give you my email.

Thanks for the laughs. Sorry that rock stopped your fall via your face. Ouch. On one canyoneering trip, just before our uphill slog of an exit, one 64 year old group member tripped and slammed her nose/face on a rock. She had a helmet on, but the impact was still very forceful. I'll never forget that sound. She stuffed tissue up her bleeding nostrils and continued the hour and half, uphill hike without a single complaint. #beastmode

Ouch! Those canyon exits are no joke. I just went through Waterholes with no incident and end up falling on a flat, beginner trail. I'll take it, now that I think about it. Easy enough to get out of Cabin Loop. Not so easy in a technical canyon.

FYI, Tina is not strapped into her hiking poles correctly. The hand needs to come up through the strap, not down through. The strap should be tightened enough so that the it provides the bulk of support when the pole is planted. This cannot be done with the hand alone, as the hand cannot be held at the correct angle when the pole is thrust out in front of the body. Additionally, poles should be extended when going downhill, and shortened when going uphill in order to maintain an approximately 90 degree between the forearm and bicep. Nice vid!
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, neither of us use them right. Personally, I don't like the straps around my wrists. They feel too constricting. But as the person who just face planted on a rock, my opinion doesn't really count here.
@picmanjoe
@picmanjoe 9 месяцев назад
@@JerryArizona Ha ha! I just hiked with my SIL on the Longs Peak trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. His first time using poles and now he says he'll never hike without them. Strap irritation is an issue, as we both experienced a little, but regardless of how you use them they still help with balance and knee pressure. But yeah, I fell once anyway. No guarantees in life! Happy hiking!

It all comes with the territory of hiking and walking, if you do it long enough. I've had it all happen, too. One time on the Natchez Trace I got caught in a torrential downpour on a beautiful cloudless day when the weather "experts" claimed zero chance of rain. Walked 2 miles through muddy ruts and got as sopping wet as I've ever been in my life. One time in Canada, I went down a very short trail to a lake and slid on scree, tearing the palm of my hand to shreds to catch and slow my fall. I've been bitten by fire ants and lots of mosquitoes. Fallen into mud pits. I was walking on a popular wide paved multi-use path locally and had a reckless guy on a bike run into my back at full speed. Walked over a mile back to my car with a broken rib. Also had dehydration from the heat, digestive issues (putting it nicely), etc. No matter what happens, I'll never stop hiking!
@JerryArizona

Oof. Had plenty of weather related mishaps. I don't envy you the broken rib. I've heard they're extremely painful.

Dang Jerry...glad your ok...but be honest, Tina socked you in the eye after sticking your camera in her face one to many times! LOL! P.S. What kind of camp chair do you have? I had a neck fusion & need a chair with some neck support. Your chair looked pretty comfortable.

Given what she's told me in the past, when Tina finally snaps, that camera is going somewhere else beside my eye......That's the Get Out Gear trek chair. I recommend looking at that one and the Helinox high back chair. I don't have the Helinox high back (I have their Chair Zero), but I'm digging the Chair Zero and the Trek Chair.

Ohh uff that hurts. Well hopefully you did not break your nose and hopefully your orbital whatever its called is not broken also. Of many years hiking as a family, we have been fortunate enough to have only very seldomly get hurt, usually broken toes or something. It is never a fun trip when everything hurts (and falling makes everything hurt elsewhere too). Tina being in medical field, no doubt assessed what had to be done and off you went. Honestly while overnight trips may get you to the mexican food faster, I think you benefit the most from a 2 night thing. Your videos when you guys hit the trail on friday after word, then do the camping night 1 and 2 make these long hikes more bearable on both of you. In my experience... I can hike 10 miles a day but hiking 8 miles makes me crabby. Especially when something hurts and its cold and all this other stuff. But winter cometh so I guess that comes with the territory. I have been watching forecasts and cold weather is moving in to the region. What happened with the shoulder? Hopefully your shoulder is alright. These things linger.

We had a UV filter, but it doesn't filter particulates. I've since gone out and bought a mechanical filtration device that I'm going to test out on our next trip. The UV helps with some stuff that a mechanical filter doesn't - either viruses or bacteria? - but I believe that's an issue in tropical environments and not really around here. Can't wait to try it out so I'm not stuck to clear water sources.
