You are an excellent team! You must have driven Jeeps in the Marine Corps. Pulling a trailer through all that? The wrong move and the trailer could have rolled the Jeep too. I just did the trail 2 weeks ago after another crazy monsoon. Trail was pretty torn up. But what an adventure! I give you huge props for doing it towing a trailer. And myself for doing it alone without a spotter.

I did the WRT on a motorcycle in 2006. I now have a jeep and want to try it again. Went there last year but all trails were closed due to rain. I`ll try again in 2023. GREAT video,Thanks,looks like I will need 2 days...did it in 1 day on the bike.

We were just in Utah last week and talked about doing White Rim next year, but wasn't sure if we wanted to. These 2 videos have been the best and most descriptive videos on White Rim I've seen, while doing my research. The trail looks awesome! Definitely putting it on the list for next year! The main issue was that we did this spur of the moment and didn't properly plan it out. In more recent big trips, we carefully map the route, calculate the number of miles, and then figure out how much case we need to make it. Our recent videos about the Maze District are a great example of route planning/gas calculations.

I do a fair amount of overlanding and there are times when trying to estimate your fuel consumption mileage can be off by more than you think. I carry 10 gallons of extra fuel on long trips due to only having a 19 gallon fuel tank. On 3 trips this was barely enough so now I plan for a refuel stop even if I have to drive out of the way by 10 to 30 miles to do so. Just the way it is sometimes. I was hoping you would make it.

This video is simply AMAZING, you definitely have some top notch skills off road driving! I have always wanted to do this trip but now taking a real glimpse on the actual conditions and difficulty of the roads, I think I may have just changed my mind 😆 You got rewarded with some breathtaking views! Keep in mind that this was immediately after a monsoon that really did some damage to the trail. Search for White Rim on our channel and watch our newer video after the trail had been repaired.

Did the WRT 8 years ago. We knew going in that it was impassable at the end due to flooding of Green river so basically did it twice. As beautiful as it was I think I got my lifetime's quota of desert scenery on that trek and have no plans of ever going back again. I much prefer the mountains with rocks and trees rather than just rocks but hey, you gotta do it once.

Just awesome scenes! Thanks for a very detailed series of this trail that my buddy and I ate planning to do in October, 2024. I've seen White Rim Trail from the Canyonlands roads and now want to drive it. Both my buddy and I are backpackers so we know how to prepare for the camping aspect. The DRIVING ASPECT is another story. Hope we will be prepared! I did by the book on tis trail and am watching every video on it that I can find. WHY didn't you show your camp setup??

Paused at 28:58 to make my prediction: I think you made it, but barely. I've driven white rim 4 times, and each time I've had range anxiety, but didn't need to tap into our spare tank. We usually drive with our windows down with no A/C just to preserve fuel! I've seen Teslas down there on that trail, I can't imagine the range anxiety they must have.

Kudos for doing that with a trailer! 🤙🏼 We were on that trail the first weekend in October and it was a little better than what I saw in this video. One rig with a bigger trailer than yours turned around at the hogback climb as he didn’t feel comfortable. I wonder how much longer this trail will remain open. The erosion taking place is pretty intense!

You won on the gas situation, I would have been sweating bullets. We filled my Jimmy in Green River and drove in from the Shafer trail until it was half spent the night and drove out on potash to Moab. I got a motel for my wife and daughter like I promised her. Great times. 👍.

We ran the WRT August of 2020 and it was way better than what you experienced, but still scary. Our stock Grand Cherokee TH didn't have any problems, the driver was sweating it. Thanks for the video, good luck.

Just did the whole trail in an f150 ext cab 8’ bed and 6” lift. Very tight with the tires over the edge in more than a few places. The turning radius made this difficult. I must say a lot of these very steep ascents and descents fried my nerves. Loved it but I would never want to go through it again. Did the whole hundred miles in one day because we wanted out!

We were in the trail last June. Was amazing! But following Google maps we hit the trail in backwards! I had to stop a couple times because upcoming traffic! I spent the night at hardscrabble and then we when back, I had to drive away to Deathvalley. My trip started on FL. By the way, my rig is a 16 Ram 1500 2wd, 4'' lift on 33'' . I'm planning to visit the area again and spend at least one week. I had extra fuel with me, 4× 5 Gal. Jerry Can.

trails off road is a good site but they do miss calculate quite a few trail ratings from our experience. You are spot on with your review and for us with our expedition trailer this would definitely be up there on the scale for sure.

Part 2 was better than part 1, Hardscrabble shelf road (starting at 5:37) without a doubt the worst I've ever seen it as shown by your video. NP service did remove that boulder which was a concern of mine. Many gas powered vehicle have cut it close on this trail, but you made it . I'll be checking out your videos! this was a great video and I doubt our TC's could have gotten pass that boulder!

I did this about 20 years ago. An extra 5 gallons of gas went a long way towards the end. Also, I don't remember it nearly as rutted as it seems now. Then it really was an "easy" trail.

I think you misspoke in saying you were climbing Murphy Hogback, that was actually Hardscrabble Hill, confirmed by the fact that you camped at Hardscrabble CG. Happy to report that as of April 20-21, 2022 the nasty washout area you descended before reaching camp has been repaired. We did an out and back, from the north end, on those dates; the Park Service was working that section with fresh gravel and heavy equipment including a full size road grader. SMOOTH. The wash was soft sand, giving some motorcycles trouble, but easy with 4WD.

I was supposed to do White Rim back at the end of August. But of course the day I was supposed to start it and the night I was camping, storms were rolling through and there were flash flood warnings. My camp site was Potato Bottom, and after talking with the rangers they had told me it was my choice, but they highly recommended canceling. So as much as I didn't want to, I canceled. Much safer and I would rather do it when it's sunny than while it's raining all day. Some of those spots because of the washouts would have been pretty tight in my F250. I did end up going to Canyonlands and made a day of it in the rain, just didn't go on any trails that day. Oh well, just means I have to go back to Moab and try again haha.

This trail would have had/will have the better half putting claw marks in the oh-sh!t grab handles! One thing I noticed on our Gladiator is the fuel gauge and miles to empty are a little overzealous in the calculation. Not saying it's right or wrong, but at one point pulling our trailer we were at 1/8 of a tank and 35 miles to go. After we unhooked at camp, I went and got fuel and by the time I was at the station, I was at 70-ish miles and a quarter of a tank.

Glad you made it... and having seen it all i'd still do it in the JT-R but you making it through with the camper in tow is not something i'd try having seen you do it. The good thing is you have a tough trip under your belt pulling the camper over long offroad distances needing 4L often in tough spots so your fuel estimates will be much better going forward. My JT gets 9mpg avg over 1100 miles pulling my 4k Winnebago Hike from Chicago to Leadville but gets 3 to 4 average from Denver to Leadville ..

We would have had to turn around, knowing we would run out of gas. We had a Zoleo for satellite communication if we had to contact emergency services to bring us gas.

@@TrailTraveler Glad that you are so well-prepared. I drove the Shafer Trail and Potash Trail about (I hate to say) 40 years ago in a Rambler with my wife. Yes, a Rambler. There were a couple of "obstacles" that were problems. One was going down the Shafer Trail switchbacks. Snow was melting across the road creating very slick mud. We had to slide around a couple of the turns...very scary and close to being a disaster. Once past that problem, there was no way we could go back up. Then on Potash Trail, there was one crossing of a gully. Lots of big loose rocks...not the best idea for a 2-wheel sedan. I had to get out and move a couple of the rocks so that we could get across. I must have been a little stronger then. Elephant Rock was another one we did, but in a Bronco II...still a big challenge. Anyway, I am enjoying your videos immensely. Keep 'em coming.

What an awesome adventure. I did the Shaffer Trail two years ago in my stock Ford F-150 Crew Cab 4x4 with stock tires. I've read reports about the White Rim trail and had contemplated trying to drive it in my stock truck but now am having seriously second thoughts about it. I think one of my biggest fears is meeting someone coming from the opposite direction. I would think they should make the trail one way on alternate days or something. I can't imagine what you would have had to do in many of those areas if you met on coming traffic, especially towing your trailer. GREAT VIDEO. After I started Part 1 I had to stay glued until the end and now it's 2 AM ! and it was totally worth it. I would have loved to see your camping setup.

We just posted a video from a few months ago and the trail was in much better condition, but yes, there are a few spots where oncoming traffic would a major issue. Fortunately, we really never see to many people on the trail since only 25 vehicles a day are allowed.

@@TrailTraveler What is the title of that video, or link for it? I would like to view it. I'm still wondering if my 4x4 F-150 , with just A/T tires would be adequate. I about flipped with I saw that truck coming at you and they were towing a flat bed trailer. I can't imagine having to back up on one of those shear cliff side portions let alone trying to do it with a trailer attached! Isn't there an unwritten rule about which vehicle is supposed to back up when presented with that scenario ?

I think now I'm pretty much convinced NOT to try it in my F-150, even with my mirrors folded in :-) I think something like a Polaris UTV might be more to my liking although I don't know if one of them will carry enough gas to make that trip. loved watching your video on this trail. i rode the white rim trail march 2022 on a yamaha tenere 700 adventure bike. interesting watching the differances of bike vs jeep. i did the entire trail in one day on 3 gal of gas. hard to believe jeep is that bad on fuel offroad. interesting that even though i only rode it once i remembered almost every spot watching you go thru it. i found myse;f answering you on which way to go (when you had to do 3 ptt turn...lol)

With no trailer it is pretty easy, especially when the trail is in good condition. During this trip, the conditions were the worst they have been in a number of years.

That very idea was under serious consideration. We decided to keep going and be very frugal with gas and we could have dropped it at several points along the way out.

Great video! When you started, did you have a full tank? Just estimating some mileage as my Jeep usually gets 330 miles on a full tank, so I’m guessing I’ll be ok even though I’ll use more gas using 4 Low etc.

When the trails are in "normal condition" it shouldn't be any problem. This particular video was right after monsoons had done a lot of damage to the trail and I would not have recommended a vehicle like that.

The Whiterim is great. But the distance between campgrounds and the lack of ability to reserve them came make doing the trail less than ideal. You’re lucky to get campsites with reasonable distances between them. By the way guys, there is gas right when you get back on 191.

You reserve the campsites via recreation.gov. They go very quickly. They come out every few months on the 8th of the month at 7am PT.

I’ve done the White Rim Trail twice in a Toyota FJ, each time starting from Moab with a full tank of fuel and never had issues with running out. Don’t understand why you had issues.

What do you air tires down to?

The short answer is "it depends". For normal off-roading, we will generally go down to 13-14. For worse conditions like snow, very rough surfaces, or rock crawling, we will go down to 9-10. Doing something like White Rim or The Maze District (we have just posted those videos) we only went down to around 18 in order to not totally kill our gas mileage.
