When I decided to start living a more minimalist and simple lifestyle, I stopped buying a lot of things and removed a lot from my budget. But there are some areas I still put money in the budget for, even as a minimalist. These are a few things I buy more of as a minimalist.

I really needed this! I started my low buy /decluttering journey about 6 months ago. I recently had to spent a lot of money on doctors and medical treatments (not covid related) and I got SO anxious because I had to spend money.. Even though it's on MY HEALTH. Like, what the heck, I used to spend so much on clothes and literally didn't care and now when I spend money on my health or education I freak out... I don't know if this makes any sense, it's just really hard to remember that spending is not always a bad thing. You need to budget, do your research etc but some purchases/spendings are good and it's so hard for me to remembering that. Love your channel ❤️

I started therapy recently and it is SO worth the money, even though it's quite expensive per session. But taking care of your health is super important! I can relate so much, I used to spend thousands on useless clothing and not blink an eye... and yet I hesitate dropping money on therapy, which helps me. Keeping a budget helps keep me sane and allowing myself certain purchases!

If you live in America I would understand why you freak out lol. I started minimalism and budgeting not long ago, before I wouldn’t care where I spend my money or presents but not I’m always so conscious on where it goes and for what reasons that it is kinda making me anxious. I’m still learning so I hope the anxiousness goes away

I used straight lavender oil on my skin to prevent and heal acne and heal sunburns overnight. It's extremely effective for me. The one I use is organically and ethically grown, without any fillers to make it cheaper, and I know I'm not allergic to it. Your statement is over broad. There's nuance in essential oils just like in every part of life.

Thank you for discussing how you support creators/artists. I'm trying to low buy and no buy certain categories. But I'm going to be building into my budget two things. A- A monthly book subscription box that from a small company that not only gives me a new book to read but alsp introduces me to new artists. The box brings me an insane amount of joy each month. B. A set amount I can spend on Etsy to support the artists I love. My main goal is to shop small and indie whenever possible, even in my budget

I also switched to drugstore skincare and my skin looks better than using all the expensive creams, serums, etc. I still leave room in my budget for yarn - I'm a knitter and working on starting an Etsy shop. Thank you for continuing to share in your journey from shopping addiction to minimalism. You are a RU-vidr I continue to watch as I am unsubscribing to tons of others that have become like background noise to me and I realize much of their job is to sway me to buy more and glamorize materialism. I’ve been decluttering for years and I’ve been scratching my head why I continue to have so many garage clear outs I am finally realizing all the accumulation of Bringing things in is really nullifying the decluttering. It’s kind of a silly conclusion but while it’s happening it can be hard to see it. My decluttering is essentially fruitless if I don’t start shifting my focus to how much I am impulsively purchasing things or relying on material things. Keep doing what you’re doing because it’s really motivating and so practical.

I'm so guilty of stock piling lol but over the last year I've dialed it back and been more conscious of how much we use a product like dish soap, toilet paper, body lotion etc. I still do buy a few of something at a one time if it's on sale and make sure it's not going to go bad. I also recommend doing a mental inventory so that you don't keep buying what you already have!

Since adopting more minimalist habits to pay off my student loans a year ago, one thing I actually spend more money on now is skin and hair care! Not necessarily expensive brands (although I do sometimes, but only after a ton of research!) but I make it a point to take really good care of my skin and hair. I have noticed a huge difference in creating a routine that works for my skin and hair types. Some might say it’s not very minimalist to have a five step skin care routine or to use shampoo, conditioner, and a hair mask when there are all in one products you could use or steps you can skip, but I honestly feel a lot more productive and more confident and I think that is worth it for me!

I totally do the stock pile thing, and then once the pandemic happened I stopped doing it because I didn’t appreciate others doing panic buys. I eventually ran out of a lot, mainly because I am not able to always shop for the items that I stock pile. I didn’t like the feeling of not having the things I need and once shelves became more stocked, I started building my stock pile back up. This just means 2-3-6 months worth of certain necessities. When you’re in a state that completely gets locked down, it’s absolutely vital. Water has become the most important thing to me. I used to never keep canned foods, and now my small pantry cupboard is full. There were times I ended up having to buy similar items, since my preference was sold out, which in some ways I didn’t mind and did save me money, some horrible rip offs with price gauging, some I’ve learned to live without completely, and others I did not want to compromise over again. This has definitely been a mental exercise on spending. The months I only spent on necessities were honestly boring. Building a savings was great, but there’s so much I still have to work on when it comes to buying things for the temporary happiness. Thank you for sharing your journey and another helpful video!

Thank you so much for your insights. I thought about this and what I invest in are repairs, for instance on clothing items that I are good quality and that I love, but also on furniture. More like this, if I take up a repair myself or decide to DIY anything, I spend money on materials and tools. Good stuff is really half the result. Don’t buy cheap just because you’re afraid you won’t do a good enough job, you’ll be sabotaging yourself. And the last thing is food items that I LOVE. I need to lose some weight and choose to eat of those things I can eat or that I want to eat, only the best quality I can afford. That way I will really enjoy it and it won’t feel like a punishment to get into shape. 🙂

I completely agree with you on making coffee at home and purchasing better quality furniture (something I learned by wasting money on the cheap stuff that doesn't last). However, I disagree on buying things when you need them all of the time... I'm a sale shopper. So anytime target or costco or somewhere has a sale on things I need go buy like toothbrushes, toilet paper, even meats that I can throw in the freezer is when I tend to stock up. I keep my budget lower this way because I buy when things are discounted for something I am going to buy in the future anyway. I can usually get away with having sale items like toiletries, laundry stuff and even meats on hand until the next sale when I'll stock up again. It's also nice to not have go to shop for specific items constantly because I have them on hand. I think if you have the room in your home it is really good to have a stock pile of things that you'll always need ( not just random stuff). Also, shopping the sales in this way makes me feel like the smartest shopper because I don't have to worry when prices increase because I already got my stuff on sale haha.

I find that I spend quite a bit money on tools and other things in order to grow vegetables, and be able to make food from scratch. Luckily, this are things you buy only once, that is if you buy good quality. And as a family, we also spend more money on tools and "stuff" to be self sufficient, and in order to fix both the house and the cars and other machines we own instead of buying new, or having to get someone else to fix them. I guess you could say I spend money on knowledge, the knowledge of how to grow food, how to fish and how to use the resources where we live. Maybe it is not a minimalist life in terms of how much we own, but it is a simple life that gives meaning.

I spend money on almost nothing now. I did a no-buy 2019, a low-buy 2020 and am now doing a no-buy 2021. This year I am doing replacement only on things like skincare, clothing, hygiene, household. I don't wear makeup and I shaved my head in 2019 so I don't spend on hair care. I do still give as part of my budget. I am not spending on anything else except household bills, fuel, insurances, groceries and pet care. The last several years have drastically changed my thinking, my spending and my habits!

The coffee thing is harsh, but true. We've been making coffee at home for years but recently switched from the Starbucks Verismo (no longer sold, it was basically like a Keurig) to a Rok handheld espresso machine. Picked up lounge wear style bras from Allbirds early in lockdown and I’m not sure I will ever wear anything else. Merino wool and all the good environmental and ethical stuff too. Plus they were like $30, questionable dupes from Target are like $22 (I looked).

I love to read so I buy all my book books from the thrift stores....especially when they have book sales, like fill a bag for $2 or half price book days...most of my books cost $.50 to $1.00. Once I’m done reading the books, they get donated back to the thrift store.

I have reduced my spending this past year in some areas, and I am finding as things wear out, to research and invest in items of better quality that will last a long time and are better for you and the environment. Many I have been able to find second hand - huge savings! My aim is to go plastic free in the kitchen in 2021 - not just the January challenge, but to really take the time to evaluate what I really use, use up what I have first, and sell pieces I don't use, to fund items I want to replace or need. Recently I upgraded my son's plastic sippy cups to a metal nesting open cups. A small investment for a small set, but no worries about plastic health concerns, they have a great warranty and I was able to resell his plastic ones to put towards his new ones. We even use them as outdoor cups that can't break on the deck and camping - so they pull double duty. So as needs change, better choices in products in my priority now that must be able to pull multiple functions/uses.

The only stockpiling I do is for skincare. However, the way I do it saves me money. For the most part, my Sephora purchases are only ever made during their VIB sales. Since I'm Rouge, the 20% off saves me quite a chunk of money I would otherwise be spending if I purchased the same items for regular price.

I've only recently learned how awesome it is to have quality undies and bras. It is so worth it both financially and so my own sanity. I'd rather have one good bra (like the one I got from Knix) than a drawer full of mediocre ill-fitting ones.

Last year I had to replace most of my underwear, they were all worn out. I replaced them with cheap stuff to save money. And talk about weggie ussues! Chafing to the degree of needing pharmaceutical creams and treatments for a whole year! 😣 So that became some expensive undergarments! Especially since this year I realised enough was enough and replaced them all again with comfortable and better undies. Boy did that all end up expensive, not to say uncomfortable and painful. So yes, some things are really less pricy in the long run to invest in. Stay comfy ladies.

1. Presumably your tech is tax deductible as well? Don’t know what the position would be in Canada, but it would be in UK. 2. Drugstore skincare - if a company like Unilever or Beiersdorf is putting their own brand label on a product then they are very confident about what’s in it. They might put £X behind a start up they can disown if the product gives customers skin breakouts, etc but they will not put their own label onto the formula until the teething problems are resolved.

People should spent money on what they want, like you do. I do not spend money on things you like at all. Be happy and smart with your money always. I learned this when I was 10 years old, you want something work for it do not expect somebody to get it for you.

I have a budget line item for hair care. I stopped coloring about 18 months ago and only go to the salon for trims now. My natural hair is so nice, who the heck knew?? Currently using New Wash which is hella expensive but I also no longer buy mousse, gel, leave ins and heat protectants. One of the great things about minimalism is the way it helps you distill what is in your life to identify what is important to you. Clearly I'm happy with less clothing and make up but my hair needs to look good!
