Today I'm talking about all the mistakes I made as a beginner minimalist. I often dive into new interests headfirst, which also can mean you fall flat on your face every once in a while. These are some of the things I wish I knew about minimalism before I started decluttering, and before I decided to embrace minimalism as a lifestyle.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm embarking on a 'journey' for 2021, and your content has been inspiring!! I don't know what it will look like exactly (I have a 10K savings goal), how it will all unfold, and that is A-OK. It is exciting to anticipate what internal changes come about as I work on the external life I've been living. Thank you again! Happy Happy Holidays, and enjoy your vacation!

After decluttering for almost 2 years now ! I realized it could get so addicting !

I agree. I remember 4 years ago when I started I would go around and declutter every weekend because it made me feel good. It was an activity that was only mine and time for myself and making peace with my space. Now it's the second cycle and I have less things to declutter (mostly gifts, hand-me-downs and straight up trash I thought I would repurpose) and I still feel like I am addicted

I've been a minimalist for 4.5 years. Here are my biggest mistakes that I can think of... 1.) Decluttering my fantasy self: I decluttered my "field biologist" blouse only to be asked to do some field biology shortly after that. It's okay to store hobby stuff for when you have a chance to do it, and you don't have to get rid of every single weird/cool/unique thing you own to be a minimalist. 2.) You still have to budget. If you don't tell your money to go into savings or debt repayment, your partner will buy more stuff for your house, your mom will pressure you into a vacation, you'll never realize that you're way overpaying for your car insurance, you'll get charged bogus fees, and you'll have nothing to show for your no buy year. 3.) Not buying any skincare items. Skincare is healthcare for me, and it's unreasonable to not take care of your health because of a minimalist ideal.

So, I’ve learned that if I make it hard on myself to get rid of things that I am decluttering I am more aware of what I bring in. What I mean is, if for example, I try to sell an item instead of just taking it to the local Goodwill or throwing it in the trash, that takes effort, which makes me more thoughtful of what I am thinking of bringing in because if I decide that I don’t like the new item then I have to try to sell that item too.

I grew up with parents who were just post depression era. My dad, who was also a career military person questioned the whole declutter concept. My dad felt this was an entitled way of being. He used what he had and when it was unusable he then repaired it or replaced it. I fell off that track, but I’m now back on it. I use things/wear things until they wear out, even things I don’t like. This concept alone has stopped my shopping habit. I know if I buy it I’m stuck with it.

I think Covid taught me that it's awesome to have stuff. I went into my garage and found a dozen N95 masks that were used by my work crew--just once--when I bought my house. I found seeds that were given to me. I found a bicycle and all the accessories for it. I found paint and refreshed my bathroom. I've not once had to buy anything from Amazon. And I don't buy cloths to wash my car or clean my surfaces or shine my shoes. I cut up my old clothes and turn them into rags.
@gwenj5419
@gwenj5419 3 года назад
It worked for that generation because they didn't buy very much either. You can keep things and use things up but not if you buy new stuff constantly.

Less stuff makes me happy, but in my declutter-rage... I threw stuff away that I actually used. So I declutter now like you mention in the video, and it works great!

I like minimalism as a tool to make my life easier, but I am not a minimalist. I don’t like the label because if you state to be something people always come and say that you’re not.. so I am not trying, I still like the concept though and I live by its standards (most of the time) 🙂 this is what I learned since I started in 2018 🤗

i've been working on my eco-minimalism journey for a few years now and one of the ways i make mistakes is not speaking up and saying "no." this includes getting freebies randomly handed to you or when i get some useless object after donating blood as my "reward." then i'm the one that needs to find a way to responsibly dispose of the item i didn't even want :( something i'm planning to stand my ground on going forward!

I really love this list. I want to balance my line of loving stuff (like my books and geekery merch) and wanting to have a more minimal approach. I guess I just want the cliche of having every single item in my possession either be useful or bring me genuine joy

I agree, intentionality is my my current life philosophy. I’m continually tweaking my stuff, but that’s me. I started about 9 mos before you, Christine. Cost: it makes no sense to get rid of a solid wood heirloom piece of furniture for a sexy, minimalist IKEA piece. Even thought I love Ikea. Regarding the black/gray T-shirt look-I’ve been married 36 yrs, and when my husband wears the same thing year after year, I get so bored looking at him, even if I chose that perfect fitting button down oxford cloth shirt! Those guys have great content, but boring clothes!

Great video, as someone who started the journey of minimalism this past summer, I can relate to a lot of things in these videos. Only now am I starting to calm down and focus less on the "stuff" and more on the "time". I have stopped doing obsessive, day-long decluttering that I used to do every weekend. I agree that minimalism is a process and a habit, decluttering takes time and you don't have to do it all at once.

I totally agree with you about the slow method of a closet declutter. As a collector of fashion I currently filled 3+ closets over a long period of time ( many years), however I do eliminate items, but not in large quantities. A big portion of my wardrobe has originated from my position as a fragrance sales associate at a popular department store where black was my daily uniform. As a result I have a huge collection of black items & feel that some day when our lifestyle gets back to normal I will wear them! Will that be a reality or just my personal fantasy??? Thanks for sharing! 💟💜💟💜💟

I appreciate that you said that decluttering takes time...to go slow...and that you can still have things (I can keep all my books!) and have a minimalist mindset. Agree there's a lot of pressure out there with the small wardrobe and the whole "getting rid of all the stuff" and it's overwhelming at times. Love your channel and your perspective! Started watching you close to a year ago and you really have inspired me - in many ways. One way was with debt- I really got focused on paying off my debt. A year ago I felt I was at the point of no return and needed to so do something! I saw one of your videos and right then and there I decided I was going to get intentional with my debt repayment. Since then I have my husband and I have paid off my credit card, his credit card, my car, his car, our camper (small- not expensive) and now we are working on paying off our HELOC. Thank you so much for bringing us your experiences being an “influencer”! Happy Holidays!!

My style is just not set in stone and probably never will be for me to get into minimalism fully. I still fall into the trap of following trends but I’m also trying to be less impulsive when buying. As you’ve described, I have started to become a more intention shopper. I think in the middle of 2019 was when I actually took time to decide whether I really needed something rather than wanting it and that has helped a lot. It also really helped that, for most of the year, I avoided going to the mall because of pandemic restrictions and also realizing I didn’t like going to the mall as much. Your videos have helped me so much when it comes to changing my shopping habits so thank you ❤️ Now I just gotta work on being less impulsive with trying new restaurants every week and instead cook more at home lol

I looove this video. One of the lessons I learned may not be a popular one, but it has worked for me. And is to not declutter everything just for the sake of decluttering, especially stuff that you for sure know you will use later, sometimes it's just wasteful. I have been almost three years without buying certain useful items just because I had a lot of them.

As always excellent point and great video. This is a like minded community and we're all on this journey together, thanks for bringing the awareness - if you're not making mistakes (and learning from them), you're stumping your own growth. What minimalism means to me is just simply using less - intentional, intelligent, compassionate consumption - it's about not becoming another mindless consumer that has become a complete drain on the planets resources and contributing to polluting and raping this planet and every being that lives in it. It's about doing my part - for the collective (our earth and all the beings)

Hi Christina, great insights as usual :) I agree it's all about intentionality and it does not mean necessarily that minimalists are cheap... I consider myself quite frugal and I don't like to overspend, but currently I don't mind spending a few hundred dollars on a good quality handbag lol. I prefer to buy less stuff overall but of a better quality, especially for things that bring me value and I expect to use them for a long time. Merry Christmas and all the best to you and your channel in 2021 :)

I tend to disagree. Every person evolves and our tastes change creating need to remove some irems that no longer bring value, also if there are kids in the family they will create clutter. I think there never comes a point when we do not need to declutter occationaly. 😁

In all honesty here, it feels like I'm still learning things as I go about this minimalism journey, and I've been at this for a little over 2 years. Minimalism is supposed to be for your own sense of peace and clarity; no one else has to understand it, and you can't really make people understand it either. Accepting this has been a struggle recently, but I'm trying my best. I'm also learning that if you're trying to be a minimalist in a non-minimalist home, you can either try to live by example and respectfully encourage your roommates/significant other/parents/siblings, or just let them be messy in their own designated spaces.

My humble opinion is, she could’ve just kept her clothes/things and organized it based on occasions/seasons etc. Store away those that are not being used atm. My best guess is if you over declutter you will eventually fall into the same consumerist pattern.slowly. As a minimalist, you need to also be mindful of your carbon footprint. Why would you add more trash back out there if you can re use your own things.

To any minimalist novice or pro, what works for me personally is the "6 month rule". Which simply put, if it isn't going to be used or appreciated in 6 months, then it's getting donated if reusable, tossed if it can't. Plus I've realized that SO MUCH consumerism is such a modern construct that I CAN opt out of. Newest food trend (even if it is vegan/organic) or fashion trend? I've pretty much ignored trends since 2000. Holidays? I've completely opted out, Christmas 2020 was just another day to do a home workout, some cleaning, and say hi to the family. (I'm christian with some jewish ancestry, so I NO problems with the religious aspect, just the wasteful consumerism), And having a handbag/purse/makeup/multiple clothing accessories/multiple beauty products is an utterly meaningless thing to me, I've told myself "just because I am a girl doesn't mean I have to have and use all that stuff". So I'm a girl who owns and wears enough clothing to get to the next laundry day (5 days). Everything in my wardrobe gets worn at least once a week (ok, save my winter coat & hoodies, but they are used within 6 months), and gets worn until it gets run into the ground, and gets tossed on the rag/material for patching pile once it has too many holes and can't be repaired any more. When I do get accessories, they are meaningful, simple pieces, but that is RARE, I'm happy with just my wedding band. And makeup? Haven't worn it since Max Factor was still sold in every store in the USA (circa 2000) Of course I am EXTREMELY fortunate to be in a financial situation were I could afford more clothing/makeup/accessories in fashion and quantity, but I choose not too. I'm not out to impress ANYONE.
