It's crazy how I always find out about things I never knew I needed. I always HATED the sound of dishes, but I never thought about bamboo ones or these mats. Bright lights always stress me out, but I never thought about just switching them off and using lamps instead. I guess society had always taught me to just 'act normal' and suppress my needs, maybe that's why I never thought about these things. Thank you so much, you really have helped me a lot

Omg same whenever there is something bothering me i'll just kind of ignore it and endure it instead of trying to like...change it?? It's like the idea that it can be fixed doesn't come to me and i just try to ignore the stress it gives me
@thisisria743

Okay, so in case you need this, here are some things I recently found out: you can wear sunglasses in winter if the sun's bothering you, sunglasses aren't for summer only; if you're wearing glasses, you can take them off when you're in a crowd and it's stressing you out, at least for me it's easier to see blurry instead of seeing every little detail

I always struggle with time blindness in the shower, so I started to play the same song I know by heart that lasts long enough for me to do everything (it happens to be exactly 10 min long lol). It is so much better than timers. With timers I never know how much time I has left, and then panic when it suddenly hits. Familiar song is much better with navigating me in time.

I do that too! There's a Mystery Skulls album that's 15-16 minutes long on youtube with no adverts and it is the go to "shower song" for me. 😁

This idea is a game changer! I feel like I'm completely or as close to completely time blind as is possible! I literally struggle all the freakin time! I get jumpy with alarms as they often come out of nowhere unless I'm just literally staring it down till it goes off! This sounds like a great way to monitor it! Thanks :)

Something that may be a helpful hint: I am bed ridden, so I understand keeping them close. I use to keep them in bed also, until my brother freaked out on me. Honestly, with my Traumatic Brain Injury, I simply don’t think about things like that sometimes. However, I got a 3-tier metal rolling cart (from Micheals-although I think you can find them in target and other stores also). It’s nice because I can make it into a portable charging station in my room. I’ve got a surge protector on it with multiple plug ins. Then I’m able to charge everything I need on it my laptop, iPad, iPhone, etc. hope this helps someone.

Any tips? I have a plug behind my bed I have a multiplug with my two lamps and phone charger plugged into. The phone is usually on the end table or in my hands while it's charging. I try to keep fabric away from the outlet, and when I leave for extended periods of time I unplug it just in case.. Not sure if that's enough, though.

Outlets and the electronics should be away from fabrics (and your face!) for fire hasards. A nice little sliding table that could go over the bed could do the trick!

I have depression! My son has autism, and his doctor suspected that I do too, but I don't have health insurance, so I can't find out. I have a really hard time remembering to do things, and if it's too many steps, I won't do it. Depression is so cripping sometimes! One day, I was peeling potatoes while sitting at the kitchen table. My friend made fun of me and laughed but it was that or order pizza 🤷‍♀️ finding ways to make the task less daunting and forgiving myself for not being like everyone else has helped my depression so much

@@jennytimelord9689 exactly! Tasks have to be broken down so the steps don’t seem too complicated at once, but the list doesn’t have to be too long or I just give up hope. Luckily here in the Netherlands we all have insurance and almost all mental health care (that I have needed anyways) is covered by it.

I use alarms for everything including cooking but as an extra precaution, I always turn the oven light on if I am cooking in the oven. It's just a visual reminder that it is on and I have food going. re: the vacuum, you can try a "carpet sweeper", which is mechanical and doesn't make much noise. Usually they're for commercial use but there's nothing stopping you from using it at home. It's not as effective as a regular vacuum, but it would be more effective than not vacuuming at all. You could also get a Roomba, but those are expensive. as for the recyclables, do you not have a recycling bin inside? we have one (and used to have a few when our city required us to separate them) and just took them out at the same time as the trash every week. if the walk to the shed is what's stopping you, having bins inside could be useful.

Love seeing this! I moved into my first real home two years ago (lived in student housing before that), and I did many of the same things you did. I loved decorating my house, and someone who’d just walk in here wouldn’t necessarily know that it’s setup for an autistic person (I have a lot of colour for instance, but it all matches so it makes me happy). But I have things like open shelving with jars that are all in their respective place, warm lightbulbs everywhere except for task lights, blackout curtains in my bedroom, and things are organised such that they *ideally* stay in their place. I need to look at implementing the as few steps to finish a task as possible thing, that’s something I struggle with too.

One suggestion regarding the dishwasher items: You have the detergents physically as close to the dishwasher as possible, but behind a door that swings out to block access to the dishwasher. You have to bend down, open the door up against the dishwasher door, bend down more, grab the detergent or whatever, lift it over the door and back down to the holder, pour it out, close the holder, lift the detergent back over the door and back down to the floor of the cabinet and shut the door; all this mostly bending over. If you put the detergent on the other side of the cabinet so that you when you open the door on the other side, you don't block the pathway the detergent has to travel to the dishwasher and back; there's less back-bending up and down and it's faster. Small things like this make life just a little easier.

It's supposed to be for older people but when you have daily medication to take and you never remember if you took them or all of them, it's upsetting. A pill box is weekly with the days of the week. When deciding on what to eat pick a carb then pick protein then a side vas you dont feel overwhelmed. Rice|Pasta|Bread|Potato -> pasta:tuna bolagnaise, garlic pasta, etc -> salad/garlic bread/???. Rice:tuna/tofu/(meat but I dont eat it) -> salad/kimchi/roated veg. Rice cooker is the best appliance I ever bought. BUY FROZEN MIXED VEGETABLES AND PUT IN THE RICE COOKER SO YOU DONT HAVE TO DEAL WITH SHIT. One of the least effort foods for me was oven salmon in tinfoil for 20m, tamagokake gohan is good but that was when I was deeply depressed. Tuna + rice + cucumber is amazing. Dedicate one day to cleaning a week, wash bedsheets, floors and generally destress (I do it ever sunday morning). 100% agree on reducing steps to do anything. I love cleaning my dishes before I eat so I dont have to deal with shit after im done eating.

I have ADHD with fluctuating sensory issues, but mornings are ALWAYS super hard for me in that dimension. My partner also has Autism so we mutually made a lot of changes to the environment for this issue. First thing I did was put a little comfy lounge chair right beside my bed with my heated blanket so I actually get out of bed. I also try to keep a water bottle right beside the bed all the time so I remember to drink water. I also put all my clothes except some really fancy ones in open bins, so I don't have to fold or hang up and don't get decision paralysis. In the bathroom I put soft bath mats right by the toilet and sink so it's not cold cement, and a little salt lamp (yes it does deteriorate) that's always on so I don't have to have the big light on. I wish I was able to keep my meds out in the open, but I have 4 cats and 2 dogs...so I worry about them getting access. I try to just task stack in order to remind myself like "oh I'm eating breakfast, I need my meds now" but still haven't quite found a foolproof way. I also tend to need at least 3 alarms to do anything lol. I was thinking about getting some little metal med bottles and just stashing them in our car, my bag, and at school in case I forget....which is usually pretty apparent once I've been awake for a few hours lol. I also have cut down on visual clutter a lot, so only keeping essential items...seems counterintuitive but it makes it easier to see objects that are already out bc object permanence. It also helps in keeping things clean since there's less stuff to manage.

Plastic dishes (such as from Target, at least in the US) are dirt cheap and don't clang at ALL. Also, I often find it easier to adapt myself instead of my entire environment (especially because I have roommates), so if lights bug me I have tinted glasses, if noises are bothering me (vacuum, sewing) I wear my headphones, etc. If dishes are being a terrible sensory experience, I wear gloves. Also, I have several intermediate Steps for many things, recycle being one of them! There's the Inside recycle bin, which, when full, I put by the back door so I remember to take it to the Outside recycle bin. I also have my cat's litterboxes (cats prefer 2) next to my toilet, and I scoop them whenever I use the bathroom and they need it. Same idea as with the food! BTW, I definitely related to the mirror thing! I, like, forget I'm a human person with human person needs pretty often.

My favourite tip is having a crap basket in the place that collects random clutter (it's usually the first surface when you walk in the door). It's great cos then all you have to do is go through it once a week and put everything back where it belongs and tends to be the first port of call for "I saw that thing the other day". It works up to a point, I'm luckily not autistic but I am a messy person when I'm tired/busy so... might help? Esp if you live with a tidy person (I must confess mess stresses me out and I like it when my space is tidy tbh)

One thing I have done is get a larger three tier rolling cart from target twice as big as the normal one you can get at ikea or out in the store target ( you have to order the bigger one online). I tend to like corners too but also nest where ever I choose to be in the house. Meaning I want specific things with me and any potential thing interest with me if I am at home in all rooms I am in and so these areas tend to be cluttered. I now put all my things in the large cart, books I want to read maybe, my nintendo switch, notebooks, pens pencils sketchbooks and food and I can move it from bedroom to living room I can also put my electronics in it and have a velcroed power strip with USB so where ever I go in house I can plug stuff in. I have a clamp light on it too. . I also use lamps I have a weird collection of lamps and seem to buy more by me right now I have 3 differnt lamps daylight lamp and then orange bulb lamp for warm color or night time not too bright and a spot light lamp for when i read. I think I do some of the things you said intuitively but am also realizing that I try to be normal and never thought about what I need?! and it is hard for me to use spaces in my house for things other than what is typical. example living room or dining room when it would be more useful to use those spaces for other things I like to do such as a hobby or a library or empty space.I also struggle with having things visible vs put away. If away I forget if out I can get overwhelmed.

Bamboo plates, genius! For your meds, what really helped me over the years is fill a weekly medication holder (sorry can't recall the correct english words for it). This way you know for sure you have taken your medications and if you ever doubt yourself you can check the compatiment for that day and you know for sure. So much safer. I have made my own fingertip-less gloves from t-shirt fabric (jersey) for overload days when even the slightest touch of the wrong material can set me off. This helps tremendously. I made them myself so I could make the seams on the outside as well as the print. 10/10 do recommend (but take them off for bathroom/eating/wet or smelly things/etc.

Omg I have the exact same astral realms oracle deck! It's so beautiful - I'm obsessed with the gold foiling on the corners. Also I'm definitely the same with avoiding turning on the main lights if I can help it. At the moment I don't have many side lights but it's my goal to fill my new house with ambient lighting that's not too harsh because I'm super light sensitive and also it'll just help in terms of when I'm streaming on Twitch. I love the list thing though! I'm always wanting to make a list of things to do but my laptop or phone isn't the best because I'm not actively looking at it all the time - I need to do that where I have little note pads or something in every room. That's such a good idea! As always, love watching your videos! It makes me feel like I'm not alone in the way that I am and what I do to cope with certain things. It's great!

Another thing, I know these are more targeted at kids, but if you like walls, or sides to you bed. You can either get those small rise things that you can get on toddler beds, or get a cabin bed thing. This may just be a me thing, but I just like that enclosed space just for sleeping, that I use and can lean against as a comfort thing.

Hair ties and drinking glasses in seperate rooms, I'm constantly putting stuff down, trying to get tidy etc and I can't find where theyve gone. I've started leaving glasses and hair ties in places I use them so theres one to hand wherever I am, I've found I'm drinking more water this way which I really atruggled with before.

Having a designated space for clothes I've only worn for a few hours or outer layers that don't need washed as much so I know I can wear them again before washing but keep them separate from dirty/clean clothes and avoid throwing them on a chair and making more clutter.

I live alone and have a lot of issues with smells especially when it comes to trash or dishes. I had to make a rule for myself that any dishes with food residue need to be at least rinsed immediately after I was done eating. As for taking out the trash, I try to stay on top of it but it gets really smelly I spray it with some air freshner before I tie it up and take it outside when I take my dog for a walk. It sounds strange but it really helps with my gag reflex it it smells bad.

Super great video and tips Paige!💜🇨🇦♥️✌🏼🌻🙋🏻‍♀️☕️love the coffee station and hidden sight wise litter box etc. You’ve done incredibly with this grown up endeavour! I wish when I was your age there was helpful people and knowledge to help but it was before RU-vid and such so basically all trial and error(many errors) lol. I’m so thankful for your channel as it also helps me with ideas to help my sons too. Have a good day💜

So I often have videos on 1,75 because ADHD. At the beginning of this video I thought, ah, I can knock it down a bit and then I realized the video speed wasn’t up, it’s just Paige 🤩 Your house makes a LOT of sense to me, some great tips in there and I love that it’s not all “picture perfect” but lived in and still aesthetically pleasing. And omg the light thing YES I don’t dislike the overhead light but I’m so pedantic about which lights go on at what time and it just freaks me and all my senses out if someone puts the wrong lamp on at the wrong time, I drove my boyfriend insane with it! Pitch blackness is the worst, I always sleep with open curtains, if I wake up in pitch blackness I have a panic attack because I think I’ve died 😅 With the dishes we’re polar opposites though, bamboo triggers my misophonia but I love the sound of clanging porcelain and glass. Also, with the double buns you look like an adorable Sailor Moon character!

Dear Paige, for us having practical things helps us to get out of depression, creating new goals and short time obsessions. A strange kind of therapie but it works out well. It has often to do with work, cooking, making music, designing. It is not an eternal solution, not the perfect medication but it makes us happy for some time. Thanks for your video. Bye !

This really validated how I felt about my space. I have very bad ADHD and the similarities of the sensory issues and need to see things really trips me up. I have to make my world interesting yet simple at the same time , so a smidge different but your mindset of “I know I won’t forget this so it’ll lead to the next step” kind of process I can’t wait to implement in my space

Still trying to figure out this "have I already taken my meds" thing too ! Just turned 40 and decided to change everything in my life two years ago to better accomodate my sensory and other "specific autistic needs". It feels so much better. I changed my job so I can have less and simpler interaction with people, while have the possibility to have a flexible schedule and the possibility to be "in my bubble" to work at my own pace and with respect to my high quality standarts. I started to wear earplugs all day to help me with the noises, sometimes adding a double layer of ear protection when needed. For my new job, I studied a way to have a path that I can go alone (without having to take the bus) and that follows a secluded bike path, avoiding roads so I don't have to be in contact with cars or street noises which is a big sensory problem for me. I laughted when you talked about the lamps in your house because it exactly the same for me ! It has been a huuuuuge challenge to adapt the lighting everywhere I live and work so I don't get overwhelmed (often bringing me nausea) by the light. But mostly, I take the time to be gentle and patient with myself (before I would always push myself to adapt to society's ways). I communicate my limits and learned to say no, I take time to rest, I take care of myself. When I'm having a bad day I will tell the people around me so they know what to expect and lend me the help I need. I'm also careful with the people I let in my life now, making sure they will be able to accept and support me for who I am. Suppressing all forms of unneeded stress has been lifechanging !

My daughter has high functioning Asperger’s, and she turned me on to your channel. Congratulations on your new house, family support, sponsorships, and your successful channel! My daughter has already had some moments of clarity watching you. She thought only seeing what was right in front of her was hereditary, because her grandfather, in his 70s, has the same problem. I’ve told her many times that it’s an autistic thing, but I think she finally gets it now. Thanks for being willing to share your life with everyone! I hope all your dreams come true! Please say hello to your mom from me, and tell her she did an awesome job raising an amazing daughter! Sending my love and well wishes… Kat

I am someone who needs to see my things (zero object permanence, I swear), but I also am less motivated to dust than I’d care to admit. Cabinets and shelving units with glass doors has been the game changer for me. I can see them AND they collect less dust. Also, my parents gifted me both a Roomba and a Braava. They help so much.

My daughter no longer has a clothes hamper she just has the basic open laundry basket in her room on the floor where she gets dressed so when it's full she knows it's time to do laundry. If she fills the hamper it can be over 3 weeks worth of clothes. Also they get dried on the insider airer because she has sensory issues with pegs so then the clothes are easy to hang up and stay safe inside.

This is something that I try to explain to my wife. If things are hidden I will forget that they exist a majority of the time and thus where they are. I really have to make an effort to remember things if they’re behind cupboard doors, fridge doors, or my clothes aren’t where I can see them. My clothes exist on a shelf where I can see them and decide what I want to wear. Books! If they are not near me, I will forget I have them. Even if they’re just in a different room and on the shelves with the other books. I carry to work with my a second bag that has several books in it so that based off of my needs I can decide what I’d like to read during lunch. Sometimes I’ve at least been able to narrow down the selection. But △⃒⃘ℓωαуѕ the 2nd bag. And at home I sit in the living room surrounded by multiple piles of books. Including those stacked under the coffee table. But these ones are pretty much nonexistent to me since all the titles are not visible. And I’m sure they were books I HAD to have at one point or another. I know this isn’t the same video. But I caught in another one about the hearing the electricity. I fricken hate fluorescent lights for this reason. I actually had a hard time with your dishes sound. For me it was that gritty sound. Like something rough rubbing against something rough. Wonder if I’m the only one.

Ahh, I’ve always done the same with mirrors, my staff (as I grew up in care homes) used to sing, “You’re so vain,” to me, which I was a bit offended and confused about, I assumed I was doing something wrong. It’s reassuring to hear other’s also see their body as a vehicle or a suit. Completely relate to being able to see my vehicles needs through looking at it too. I like to watch videos of myself playing my ocarina, it’s like watching someone else and I find it quite fascinating.

Hey! The vacuum noise made me think of my vacuum. It has 3 different power settings that all have a different pitch and the lower power setting is also quieter. My kiddo says the noise doesn't bother him like our old vacuum did. My brother's vacuum has a slider for selecting the power level, and it also is quieter at lower settings. That might help you vacuum :)

Not autistic but I have ADHD, I find I like certain sounds throughout the day. I found because I was craving sounds I would watch RU-vid videos, this got worse with the pandemic. Scheduling my Google to play ambient music throughout the day automatically, and change the type of light on my bulbs really helps with sensory issues.

Where did you get the bamboo dinnerware? I also hate the sound of dishes and glasses and stuff clanging, so I typically use paper plates, but those are just one time use and that's not great. One thing I know for myself is really important, is that everything in my apartment looks calm. I don't like clutter (although I am the untidiest and most clutter-y person) and I don't like intense colours, so things like bright decor are not for me. I like things that look very natural and muted, colour and pattern wise. Textures of things is also good to look into!

My mom bought some bamboo bowls off Amazon and I always wondered why I like them so much...now it kind of makes sense...no sound. They also feel..."soft" and are in pretty pastel colors. Maybe I need to see about getting more dishes that are bamboo... It's odd, I have my comb, toiletries and toothbrush/toothpaste out on my counter but it doesn't get me to use them...I guess I have issues with motivation that makes it hard to want to even bother.
