Hey guys! I had to cut out a huge chunk of my explanation for number 2 due to copyright so I'm so sorry if it doesn't make sense! But basically the bit missing is me saying how I understand why some people do like survival shows as they give a some great idols an opportunity to debut (i.e the likes of Chungha) and also existing groups a second chance (Nu'est!)
every time i see an idol do forced aegyo i die a lil bit inside, like it's cute when it's natural but forced on shows and stuff makes me doubt the meaning of reality
honestly me too! and surely when an idol isn't doing it because they want to but because they have been forced, that itself makes it no longer cute but harsh instead?
right? like chuu and sana doing aegyo i don’t mind because it’s just their vibe. but other idols, especially the ones who have completely opposite vibes doing it just looks weird and awkward
I personally cannot STAND survival shows. Like you’re literally watching these people’s hopes and dreams being toyed with in their faces like a yo-yo, and 99% of the time it’s rigged, and it’s emotionally and physically draining af. Like idol training but 10x worse because it’s televised. These people break down on camera multiple times a season and people just eat that shit up like.. why????
Survival shows are contestants last shot at debuting. They should knew all of these before participating, it's the same as us pursuing a medical degree with years of studying and years of practical training. If you knew things are not going to be easy, why the fuss of entering? Nobody said survival shows were easy, it doesn't work that way. However, we can't deny survival shows are very popular especially the produce series which attracted hundreds and thousands of viewers.
One of the worst aftermaths too is that when they found out the show is rigged, the group mostly gets the hate and its sad. Its emotionally tiring for everybody goddamn.
Dude, the Adult Ceremony! It took me years to understand why idols were dancing to it. I thought it was just an annual homage to the song but then I began realizing that it was mostly maknaes or idols that debuted as teenagers that became 19/20 y.o who performs it.
i never get into project groups because i know they're gonna disband very soon and my fav member or something might not be able to comeback 😭 its so sad because usually only one or two members see fame (like after coming back)
I cannot stand project groups. I completely skip the shows cause I can't stand the stress, most are at least partially rigged, and it capitalizes on the emotional strain of artists for entertainment. I'll watch some videos here and there but I try not to vote or get attached. And seeing the groups disband and the idolsb(especially the young ones) lose that support system is just heartbreaking.
I think cute concepts are okay for adults. Songs like Knock Knock, Likey, What Is Love, etc. by Twice are cute without going overboard. But the ones where they basically have 20-30 something year old adults dressed as elementary school kids is just creepy.
Definitely this! Sometimes cute and softer concepts can work really nicely without being weird, but when its grown adults being given a straight up childrens song...that's so creepy to me
@@dearyoongi I think children’s songs/games/themes can work with a twist. If we look at Red Velvet for example: Peek-A-Boo is a kids’ game. But they made it into a dark and mature concept. And Ice Cream Cake takes the sound of an ice cream truck (which is associated with kids since I don’t know any adults who chase after those things lol) and put a spin on it to make the sound very eerie. So yeah, if they do something different with it.l, it works. If they straight up just put idols into a kid’s school uniform... brrr... that just doesn’t sit right with me.
Such a good point! It's so clever when they can take something we all associate with out childhoods and make it mature, you can tell some real thought went into it. You can definitely tell when that's not the case 💀😂
@@dearyoongi ok but i want to ask ur opinions of nct dream and enhypen collab w pinkfond and hey tayo? bc i see a lot of ppl hating it bc its...sexualizing kids song??💀💀
Yeah, cute concepts are okay as long as it doesn't step into the looking-like-a-literal-child territory. Because I love cute concepts but I don't want to stan CHILDREN just for the concept, don't debut them. Just no.
As much as we hate idols doing aegyo. We must not forget that they're korean/in korea. I mean that's their tradition even the grandpa/grandma doing aegyo just to make their partner flutter
Agreed!! I saw some korean said that, according to them, it IS cute, no mather what age even tho it's super cringy for us but I've noticed, some also don't like it too, but for them it's tolerable I guess
not everyone hates it,, i only dislike it when theyre forced into it. some idols like sana twice, mirae dong pyo, blackpink lisa, bts jimin ( sometimes ), blackpink jisoo have natural aegyo
Though I saw some article about how Koreans see aegyo nowadays, and they say that now they hate to do it, and it's cringy when someone does it in the streets. They thought it was cute a few years ago, but not nowadays. It is still fanservice because kpop's main target are young girls. But idk, I just heard this from a few Koreans, but it might not apply to the entirety of Korea, perhaps just some areas. Who knows
@@ForevaLaTrelle "crown" was literally the only time they had cute concept so far and it was understandable since they were really young so if they act cute nowadays it's not forced but genuine ✌🏼
Ya theres been times knowing brothers crossed the line. I remember they made a joke dahyun probably showers the longest bc she's the palest and the editors even said tzuyu probably doesnt shower bc of her skin tone :/
Bruh- can they stop with the colorism already. It's fucking annoying. The way the have something against people who have more melanin than others always. Like- this shit will not make superior.
I think she had an interview where she said that she didn't even know the song had a dirty meaning to it until years later when she grew up :/ and the fact that the song is like 'oh now that you are legal, we can sexualize you with free reign' makes me sick 🤢
For knowing bros, you have to understand the cultural difference for not only Korea, but a handful of East Asian countries (I’m not as familiar with the rest of Asia so I don’t want to say for sure) are very big in respecting your elders, down to different words depending on age. That’s why you have 오빠 (Oppa/older brother)vs 남동생 (namdongsang/younger brother) and 언니 (eonnie/older sister) vs 여동생 (yeodongsang/younger sister) instead of simply just saying brother and sister as we do in English speaking countries (I’m sorry I can’t romanize for crap). Because of the whole respect situation when it comes to conversing with people unless their friends/same age (친구/chingoo), Knowimg Bros is a fun show because even though the host are way older than most active idols and participants on the show, everyone can act like same age friends and talk casually, which makes the show funny because otherwise, you’d never hear someone like Yuna for example talk to Heechul so causally like that, even with phrases we might find simple. Subtitles can only do so much unfortunately, so it’s much more interesting when you understand the language and don’t miss the actual meaning of things and the dynamics, etc. since language isn’t just about the words. Sorry for the long explanation, but I wanted others to maybe learn a thing or two in case they weren’t aware.
Yeah it's very easy to forget that they are talking informally to people who are double if not triple their seniors, myself included. And that's the appeal to Koreans I guess. It's kind of this idea that once your there everyone's the same, everyone can tease everyone and have fun like we were in school. I remember people highly anticipating Seohyun from SNSD on the show. She's known in the industry for being incredibly polite and having really good and proper manners, so much so that she refuses to speak informally to even her members, despite that she has been in the group for 14 years and only has a 1 to 2 year gap with the rest of the members. She just doesn't do it. So people were curious to see her on Knowing Bro's, she stumbled every now and then and only got through the episode by thinking she was acting and not actually Seohyun. The show allowed fans to see a more laid back and casual form of Seohyun and made many fans laugh seeing her throw insults because once again that's something you barely see of her. It was refreshing to see her telling the hosts to be quiet and to stop annoying her. I guess that same thing is what a lot of people find appealing about the dynamic.
@@angietoonz6605 yet they don't want to understand this 😭✋💜 like bruh it's not America or like any western country, we Asians have to be careful around people older to us.
i watched imitation (kdrama/webtoon where it reveals the behind the scene of the industry) and it kinda sucks since they were told to do or just follow what they've been asked
"Older" groups doing cute concept isn't really a problem unless they look forced or uncomfortable. I saw one comment on Seventeen's snap shoot performance saying its getting redundant and repetitive for idol groups to start off with a cute concept and slowly go to more mature and dark ones when the maknae is of age gets older. Which i totally agree on. If the idols have fun and can still pull off a cute concept then why not?
Well they are never going to tell you if they feel uncomfortable with it so that doesn't work. But we can assume people in their 20s/30s don't want to be acting like children on screen. They know who it targets and it wouldn't be unfair to assume they're uncomfortable.
i feel like it’s still creepy even if they’re comfortable with it. why are adults acting like kids? and why is it considered attractive? like..it’s so obvious it’s rooted in pedophilia.
@@sadiesirjue6805 i don't necessarily agree with this take, i don't think there is anything inherently wrong with cute concepts from adults, I think they can be fun, I think it's more of the fans' fault for sexualizing cute concepts
Well yeah y'all right in some way. We'll never know what they truly feel. But i just wanna enjoy performances as they are, enjoying the vocals the choreo and stuff. I dont really care what concept they do. But for the case of Seventeen they write, compose and choreograph the song sooo like um if they were uncomfortable then why? Make the song? Its a genuine question btw
@@sadiesirjue6805 its attractive because it makes you wanna take care of the person. im personally not into cute concepts, but i think saying its rooted in pedophilia is going a bit far. i dont think its weird for people beyond 20 to want to be cute sometimes.
About knowing brothers: I understand what you mean. I also only ever watch it when my faves are on there and I have found some segments really funny and I also don’t mind the hosts. However I think that the jokes and topics on knowing brother are quite culturally focused (ie we may not understand them or find them funny because we are not korean). They use a lot of puns and mention a lot of korean celebrities, athletes, politicians we don’t know
@@dearyoongi ‘catered to local audiences’ exactly the words I was looking for haha. I just compare it to some late night shows in my own country. If they get translated to English and reach international audiences a lot of people would be confused and would not understand the humour or topics discussed
Definitely! I'm British and a lot of places don't really find English humour funny whereas we of course think its hilarious!😂 so the same probably applies
Yep, and a lot of the hosts are older men so the things they reference and make jokes on are just completely out of a foreigners radar. I've watched my fair share of episodes and it's almost always guaranteed that they'll reference something from the 70's and 80's. Even trying to look up these references is hard enough. In a positive side, I have learned many beautiful old school ballads because of them singing them on the show.
Agreed... It may be not understandable to foreigns but,the jokes are still okay even sometimes it gets into 19+ but they make it just like funny topics... Plus,if the part gets aired means it is okay... Cause if the scene was like to racy then it will never be out... Knowing Bros are popular in Korea and a lot of elders watched it cause the hosts are from old times.. So,they knows what can be talk and what cannot... But,it still depends on people cause everyone get their own gag humour still... And just saying,I like your video 😅 And this is first time I write a comment 🥰
The coming off age/adult ceremony song is upsetting to see. I remember Gahyeon from Dreamcatcher performing the song, and while she definetly pulled of the concept, it just felt weird to even watch the performance. Like you said, it shouldn't be such a big thing to celebrate someone is legal... It isn't kpop specific either, remember when Bhad Barbie turned 18? The SECOND she turned 18 her first OnlyFans video became public. It's impossible for her to have filmed that at legal age. But people were counting down to the day she was legal, and same goes for many other teen stars everywhere. It's so uncomfortable to see happening
ikr... can society just stop oveseggsualizing absolutely EVERYTHING? Also, can they also stop forcing teenagers and children to grow up/mature fast?? LIKE CAN YALL SLOW DOWN??? FUCKING YALL ARE DISGUSTING AF
the counting down thing happened with many celebrities, like the olsen twins or millie bobby brown... i don't get why some people think that it's an ok thing to do?? like? it's so fucked up??
@@ayangyi I just adore how social media is stopping me from speaking the truth that should be addressed I know so many kids that were preyed on but i will only name kpop idols since that is a theme here JK & Niki(i believe there are too many) As someone who is similar age as JK, i have traumas bc of it...
Adult Ceremony isn't just a sexy concept, it's also a song basically implying a girl is stepping into womanhood and is ready to lose her virginity. Groups that are mature enough to cover it, like 9Muses, had it right. They understand the song and what it means. The Gayo Daejun performance with Hayoung, Chanmi and Joy... just no. Makes me so uncomfortable to this day. It was a public performance of three girls who just barely reached legal age singing about such a sensual topic for all these creepy old men to see at home. It doesn't sit right at all. Edit: JYP made Park Jiyoon release this song when she was BARELY 18 in international age... she had only been 18 for six months. Not to mention her previous album was "The Age Ain't Nothing But a Number" which makes me feel like JYP was 110% controlling and sexualizing her with intent. I'm not surprised she ended up leaving later.
So true, i've never understood this "Adult Ceremony" perf, especially when Jungkook and Jimin have does this (i don't understand cuz isn't it a sexy concept for woman ?)
@@darklink4955 I feel like it could be gender neutral. Idk what exactly makes it for women only besides the fact only women mostly covers it. Its still not a good tradition tho.
I think if you’re a main vocalist you shouldn’t need to get the most lines, you should just bet things that are difficult to sing like high notes or parts which are hard with chero
@@leefelix9898 I think the main rapper should get hard parts to rap - or parts that require the most flow or most stability - and I didn’t say they don’t deserve basically no lines - I think they should get judged on their skill. For example let’s say a group coming back with a light happy connect, how ever, the main rapper doesn’t suit the sound or voice of the song so they don’t get a part of a verse like who’s they would Normally (normally 70%?) but this time the lead rapper or sub-rapper who suits the voice needed for this song gets a 70% of the rap, however, there is a rap part which is hard for the sub-rapper to rap since they aren’t the best at rapping skill wise - so the main rapper gets those parts.
@@confusioniam5299 you basically just described how group singing works, if you fit the concept, you get the lines for it. If there's a ballad concept, the main vocal(s) is/are gonna get a lot of lines. If it's a concept like teen crush or something like that, how it works is that they use a demo (in most instances) and have the members sing and whoever's voice fits that part, gets that part (or if you're Day6, rock-paper-scissors for it). If someone has a main position, it's because their voice is flexible enough to get those lines.
Finally someone that found Aegyo cringe and very childish for boys and girls who are actually in their 20. Every time I’m watching a show and someone does it, I always skip
I think it's ok if not done overboard in a joking way and if the person doing it is comfortable with it. Otherwise it's cringy. But when Sana does it these things seem to apply
@@maddalena5575 some people just like to goof around tho. And I think that's ok. They are still acting their age. Personally I think it's funny if done in a joking way.
@@maddalena5575 ig it’s different for everyone. In Korea, mostly the Kpop industry, being cute is really important. For exemple, some idols are extremely loved for their cuteness (like chuu, sana, nako etc.), it kinda plays a big role
i like when idols do aegyo but its like when V does agyeo he isnt shy afterwards or it isnt awkward because thats just his nature and i only like when they are just doing it with eachother like not in a interview or like that yk what i mean?
Jimin and V are a natural when it comes to aegyo sometimes even jhope like honestly with jimin it comes out naturally hes just a bundle of aegyo waiting to happen like even if he don't do aegyo its still aegyo you know😂
@@SleepyRue I feel like what Jimin does isn't exactly aegyo. He's just adorable. Now Tae and Hobi yes. I see them doing the aegyo thing and it's quite fun actually cause it's natural haha.
@@staious7266 Mmm thats true Jimin is already just a bundles of adorableness🌸😂 V and Jhope are a natural at doing aegyo they hardly gets embarrassed after they do it they just go back to what they were doing. It's sad when Jungkook said he doesn't have aegyo which he does he just don't know that he does we see it his aegyo all the time.
Not fully related to the video, but I have an unpopular opinion I have been thinking about for a while: I feel like the girl crush trend and the cute/soft boy trend reflect what most people want in a political way. (I don´t know if people will actually get this but...) It´s like the girl crush shows powerful, strong, badass women, instead of the weak, dependent one, but I truly think being cute, giggly and innocent doesn´t mean weakness or being dependent. I feel like people are using this concept as a certainty and twist the whole situation. There also the soft/cute boy concept, that reverses the ´´toxic masculinity´´ situation. I like it, but dressing in a colourful way is not a political stand, nor is dressing in a dark attire bad either. Just an opinion. I hope people understood what I meant. T_T
@Did someone say DRACO MALFOY when you watch cute stuff you know it's fake. But the "girlboss" thing is just marketing to the foreign fans that will actually think that their idols are feminists but actually you wouldn't even know because they would be hated in korea.
cutesy concepts are okay when its natural thoo,, im personally a fan of more innocent concepts like oh my girl, fromis 9 and twice because dark concepts are just a bit sad to listen to i would say?
@@maskedswan811 Exactly, in cute concepts the clothes, music and choreography usually bring me a feeling of genuine joy. I like how the choreographies are always smiling and jumping.
About the aegyo: For me, It's depends on what idol and the way he/she do it, example, some idols (my favourite example, Chuu) look way more younger than their are in real life and the aegyo is "part of their personality" (least as far as we know) so it's natural and isn't cringe (at least for me), but others it's simply forced, and that is obvious.
I agree with the majority of your points, the only thing I'd like to add is with a lot of these things, it's not OK unless the idol actually enjoys it. For example, Sunoo from ENHYPEN is 18 now I believe and he's expressed how much he loves aegyo and refreshing, almost childish concepts bc he has fun doing them and he feels they suit him like Chamber 5. It could be like this for multiple other idols as well. They're going to have likes and dislikes, but if their preference is something which you mentioned, that should be okay for them to do and enjoy as well.
i only like survival shows when the group is permanent. like iland for enhypen and fromis_9’s show, and i’m not sure if gp999 is gonna be permanent or not. but the only time i watched a produce series was pd48 at the beginning of this year when i got into izone.
Yeah I definitely think I'd be more likely to be interested in giving a survival a survival show a chance if I knew the end group would be more permanent! I've started paying attention to what's going on with girls planet 999 but like you said I'm not actually sure if the final group will be permanent or not🤔
honestly i love aegyo a lot. especially when idols do it because the want to or when they do it unintentionally. i’m just a sucker for cute things, but i agree it gets super uncomfortable when idols who don’t want to/hate doing aegyo are forced to do it.
There are idols that have natural aegyo when they are not being forced to do it (V from BTS, jisoo from blackpink, Woozi from Seventeen, I.N. from stray kids, etc). I think natural aegyo is much MUCH cuter and more appealing than the stuff reality shows force them to do especially since they are not uncomfortable doing it
@@suiren5272 yes i agree natural aegyo or idols who just like doing it for fun are so much more appealing to watch than those who are forced to do it, i feel so bad for them
not sure why you put pentagon for no. 4… i feel like that was a perfect representation of a good fun concept done by adults. i mean… hui makes their songs so clearly they’re chill with it. frog concept easily best concept.
I was wondering that too, all of Pentagon's cute concept song aren't actually that weird brand of cute, for example Naughty Boy is about frog puns and talks about "living in a big well with my beloved", and in Hmph! They do dress like they're still in school but they're portraying a specific situation with the lyrics ("you wronged me so you can't be close to me until you apologise", which I think is a great way to talk about bullying and forgiveness) so the MV makes perfect sense. Pentagon doing cute concepts actually has an idea behind it and it's always got Hui and the members' stamp of approval so I don't see why they would be the choice for that segment.
I feel like Knowing Bros is the least bad? which doesn't mean it's good lol. for me is the only one I watch SOME clips from, but if there was a better show I know I wouldnt
Definitely see what you mean with this one! Like I used to love seeing my faves on Weekly idol, but I couldn't stand the way Doni and Coni treated them so I had to stop watching that one
I guess now that you point it out Adult Ceremony really is kinda creepy, but I didn’t know female idols made so many covers, I only know that Jungkook and Jimin did it 😅
I honestly didn't know the meaning of Adult Ceremony and yeah, it's so creepy that idols perform it as soon as they turn 18. I thought the original singer was in her 20s, but nope, she was only 18 😓
I actually really like cute concepts but like not the “baby” cute if that makes sense. Like I think adult idols should be allowed to have fun and present bright concepts if it suits them. I don’t know if you’re considering concepts that are more quirky/weird as cute as well (Crayon Pop) but some of those are the most fun. Idk I just really enjoy variety and on a bigger scale it would be nice if Idols had more control of their concepts so you didn’t have to worry if they were forced to do it. On the note of Adult Ceremony, I always just thought it was a special “sexy” performance that they did every year and then I got older and realized like how weird it it for just turned of age idols to do it, especially with the difference between Korean age and international age 🤢
IMO, I like knowing bros, it's good humoured comedy where both idols and the cast make jokes about each other..its slightly darker comedy compared to the other shows.. And here they don't baby the idols, they talk on par with them.. Tho the school uniform thing I find it slightly weird ngl, but I get the concept..
I heavily agree with the Adult Ceremony one, I also find it strange and disgusting to see idols just turn to legal age and immediately perform this ON A PUBLIC TV, its creeping me out
I promise aegyo is not that deep. We see it as way more strange than people in that culture but Korean are used to see it as common. Idols do it for fun and because it's a common game on Korean shows it's not like they are forced. Of course they are asked and sometimes it can be seen as insistence but it's not actually like that, it's part of the common aegyo cerimony where someone cringe before. Idols that didn't want to don't like TOP and Taeyang from Big Bang, Lee Hyolyn, Irene , 2ne1 members, Bang Yongguk, D.O and more didn't. They just sang the song or said the aegyo words without the vibe (with their normal tone of voice and without gestures) and lost the aegyo competition or title of cutest.
EXACTLY!! I don't want to hate on anybody, I don't particularly like aegyo either, but when I hear an international fan say they dislike aegyo and say that "idols dislike it" or they have to do it because it's fan service, I just cringe and sigh. Aegyo it's literally something cultural, yeah it can be a little cringy if you want, even more when you're an outsider, it might be odd, but it's something that is never going to go away, I get it if you are not used to that, but at the end aegyo it's just acting overly cute playfully for fun or a game. Of course you're going to cringe or laugh or hate it if your friend/group member acts like that, but it's really not that deep to be thinking idols are being forced to do it. I feel like this is something people exaggerate. Although, I agree idols should definitely be able to decide if they want to do it or not.
I have been into kpop for three years now and I have never heard of the adult ceremony before. I am shocked and disgusted.. Honestly the weird thing is, older idols dressed as cutesy boys and girls gives me a very similar feeling : S I absolutely agree with your points
I completely understand why you won't have heard of it, tbh I haven't seen as many groups covering it nowadays! But when I first got into kpop it was very common and it's never sat right with me even after all this time :(
I think the the school uniform thing in the knowing bros is because the concept is that they're all the same age in a classroom getting to meet each other for the first time. In theory it sounds so fun, because we get to see idols interact without worrying about seniority or age gaps, but I don't find the show to be my cup of tea either tbh. I think it comes down to the hosts as you mentioned
Agreed with everything except knowing bros. I always wondered why they wore uniforms but then I wondered what of it? none of the girls uniforms are sexualized and most girls style their uniforms. There's a whole concept to the show. It's a school setting where they can be comfortable and speak casual with your "classmates" it's all about the idols unfiltered. I think it's a good and funny show aside from sang min cultural appropriating 🤦🏾♀️
1. about aegyo, there’s idols that like doing it like sanha and when they do it it’s not as cringy but I agree that forcing the ones that don’t like it to do it is just hard to watch 2. as a oneit (x1 stan) I fully agree that Mnet should stop doing survivals, like gp999 is just produce with a hairdo and seeing mnet getting out of the whole situation unharmed while x1 members and fans are still traumatized by it (including myself) just doesn’t sit right with me. I feel like something like loud where it’s about finding talent for permanent groups and in the end the decisions are in the hands of the agencies is okay but what mnet does with their survivals is just wrong on so many levels and I could write an essay here but I’ll stop. 3. I agree. 4. I feel like it really depends on this one because just like on number 1, some like it, like straight up in the examples you put you had pentagon who make their own songs and choose their own concepts and they like to do those songs. There’s adults that like to change it up and just because they’re grown up it doesn’t mean the can’t do mature concepts while also doing cute stuff sometimes. Again, it’s only wrong when they’re forced to do it. 5. This is a show all guests enjoy and where the hosts are respectful. I feel like you just don’t understand that kind of korean tv humor and that’s not a negative thing it’s about culture. The school concept is also bc of the whole “everyone’s the same age so we all speak informally” part of the show.
Hi I just got into x1 recently and I feel so sad the disbanded. I'm 2 years late to the trauma but I'm a fan of Victon now and I love their music. It's must have been so hard for oneits and the members. Hopefully they can have a reunion someday :')
1) The thing about Aegyo is... you can easily spot if an idol wants to do it or not. Example: Huening Kai of TXT is famous for his Aegyo. Even if he is not told to do aegyo, he just acts cute in general, and I like it because it's him.Even the members have said it that he always act cute like that. On the other hand, one can tell when an idol is forced to do aegyo... It's not natural... 2) I hate temporary groups too. Not their talents, but the fact that they are TEMPORARY triggers me. 3) Sexualising is just... stupid and shouldn't be done without idol's consent. 4) Some idols actually like childish concepts (again...SOME) and I get it because they are trying to attract fans of all ages and create a diverse fandom. 5) Knowing brothers is... okay... It's not that funny but it's not bad either so I'm chill.
Thank you for sharing your opinions on all of them, I love that!😁 you're definitely right about the aegyo, you can definitely see if an idol doesn't mind but when you can see they really hate doing it...I feel bad for them :(
For me, I'm uncomfortable with how young they debut because they're literal children put into these really toxic and stressful situations. I really think that they shouldn't debut until they're adults. I say this thinking about how Jungkook was 15 and still in school. It's just really messed up to me.
i agree so much with number 3 and 4. i remember i was reading an article on the sexualization of children and it said that our patriarchal society sexualizes little girls/teens and infantilizes grown women so as to make the boundaries blurred between the two. and its true when you think about it its literally like giving a chance to predators to have an excuse and get off the hook like "oh i didnt know she was a minor teens look too grown these days"
My opinion: *Number 1: Idols Doing Aegyo* I am okay with aegyo actually but I'm okay if the idol that's doing aegyo is okay with it. Like there are a lot of idols that hate aegyo and I don't like how they force them to do it. If you are someone who loves acting cute and aegyo, you're free to act like that if you want (like Chuu or YoonA, they're aegyo queens), but it shouldn't be something that is forced to someone who doesn't like it (I've seen LOON∆ struggling so much with doing aegyo like Olivia Hye, Yves & Kim Lip can't stand it). *Number 2: Survival Shows to Create Project Groups* I don't know what to say about this. Like I've watched a lot of survival shows: P101, The Unit, Mixnine and now I'm watching Planet 999. I enjoy them but I don't really like the concept of project groups like I loved IZ*ONE music and now they are gone😶, same with I.O.I or The Unit groups. I feel they should just do Survival Shows if the groups are going to be permanent (like Sixteen or Idol School). *Number 3: Adult Ceremony* I don't see anything wrong with adult ceremony. Like if the idols are comfortable dancing and singing to the song, what's wrong with it? I think if they don't force the idol, it's okay. It's more like a tradition and I've seen a lot of idols comfortable while performing the song and that's good for me. *Number 4: Adults with cute concept* I have to hardly disagree with this one... Like I don't care if adults have more of a cutesy vibe, I love it. As long as the group is comfortable while keeping the cute concept, that's fine for me. I think like cute concepts helps sometimes adults to have fun too like they don't need to have the mature concept 24/7. If they like being cute, a cute song is always refreshing. *Number 5: Knowing Bros* I don't see anything wrong with Knowing Bros, in general idols are enjoying the program most of the time in I find some stories hilarious (like when Seo YeJi explained how her sister fell of a cliff and the reaction of their parents). I haven't seen to many episodes but I don't find it disgusting like I did with Dony & Cony
Pentagon write, compose their own songs and choose their own concepts tho. I saw you using a clip of naughty boy but that really isn't the case (given the meaningful lyrics of the song, related somehow to the childish concept).
I think cute concepts are quite fine for older idols as long as its like a moderate level? Kinda like Laboum's later cute songs like hwi hwi and journey to atlantis, they are cutesy but not childish in my eyes.
I’m going to make something clear… I love cute songs like as if its your last and what is love. They pulled the concept off PERFECTLY and didn’t make it overly weird but if your going to dress an adult up is a school girls outfit with blush cheeks and dance that is just creepy
Forced aegyo is really really weird... Some of the extroverted idols enjoy it, and even though I cringe a bit, it's ok, my gears get turnt when the shy, introverted ones or those who don't like it are forced to do it by MCs
i feel like i disagree with all of these lol... 1. i love aegyo. just personally i do, i think it's cute. or funny, if they're bad at it. i get if an idol doesn't actually want to do it but it is part of the idol image because it is appealing, so. i also understand doing it for the fans even if it's not something that comes naturally. i don't think it's like, an issue to ask them to do it 2. i like survival shows, but i only get into the group if i like what they start releasing after it so i'm not too stressed by them. they're entertaining enough. the riggings of course sucked, though. they got fined for it so it's public knowledge it definitely happened. 3. this is one of those things that is completely fine if the idol wanted to do it but sketchy if they were pressured, and as fans we will just never know. i choose to just let it be unless there's something indicating it's something they were forced into. 4. ohhh no, i love cute concepts. and i think age doesn't have to be a problem at all. i think this is a bit of a cultural thing too, i know some people equate being cute with being young exclusively but that's just not me. i think it's a little sad to think there's an age limit to it, since i personally find cuteness refreshing but you do you. (also you show pentagon and like, don't they write their own stuff? is that being given a concept, if they choose it themselves) 5. not a fan of the show but i watch it when groups i like are on it and it's fun then
that's okay, I was expecting people to disagree because I decided to talk about things I personally don't like which I think most kpop fans usually do. Thank you for sharing your thoughts I appreciate hearing why some can like them!
I love cute concepts and I think they can still be age appropriate just as long as they don’t include the whole school vibe as well. As a 20 year old I tend to listen to groups with members around 24-30 years old so when I see these adults who are even older than I am dressed up as literal children, I find it quite disturbing
Them being forced to do aegyo is heartbreaking. Especially since a lot of them hate it. U can see the regret in their eyes. If they like doing it, I have no problem with it. But when they look like they want the floor to eat them up rather than do aegyo, DON'T MAKE THEM DO AEGYO. IT'S THAT SIMPLE
@@dontuwannaupsidedown2921 It's cultural to do aegyo with close friends and family, not for the camera for strangers (fans). That's why it's bad and makes people cringe when they are forced do it. In my country, people call their close friends 'babe', but we can't imagine calling fans that - very embarrassing
Yk that alot of koreans love doing aegyo especially in their bf or gf and aegyo is normal in korea and ofc not all loves them but ya aegyo is not a bad thing and all ages can do aegyo in Korea
@@Ri57490 well we all have different culture aegyo is normal in korea and in western its cringy for them We dont live and we dont have the same culture
about the aegyo i think in china, japan and korea cuteness has a bigger meaning than the rest of the world. if you think about it, everything derives from that.
yes yes yES YES YESSS i agree with every single thing you said omg i love u (esp the infantilism bc majority of stans don't really talk about it and it really creeps me out too)
Naughty Boy by Pentagon was actually written by Hui😂 the leader of Pentagon and it's not just a concept. Actually the song have a message and the lyrics is quite wise
I was gonna comment on this too HAHA. I actually got into pentagon around shine/naughty boy because of the songs themselves/concepts. I rly enjoyed the take on being kind of immature, but not overly cute in a childish manner. Those songs were about growing up, or being awkward in love, and i didn't think it was too inappropriate considering some of the members were still around 19-early 20s at the time. I genuinely never thought they were trying to pander to the audience that expects the oddly sexualized school age student thing 😗
Survival shows is a downgrade-I stop watching these for like what 3 years now and now days it’s going insane. What they did to Wannaone, X1 is just unbelievable X1 was even worse. Imaging working hard all this time just to debut for 2 months and that’s it.
I like it when they do aegyo because its cringey and everyone knows it. It's a joke everyone can laugh at nowadays. Maybe back then they did see it as a form of fan service. Now Its just to makes us laugh
2:21 but if you think about it that’s the point of the industry. trainees are doing the same thing, 100s of them training and only a few will be selected to debut. except they’re not on camera as trainees and they’re contracts are longer
Gonna leave my thoughts because this is juicy lol 😆 #1 Honestly I'm completely fine with aegyo, AS LONG as it's not forced (because there's something so weird about grown adults clearly being forced to do cute things-) Either that, or they're just super over the top lol (but I usually laugh at those.) #2 Honestly I agree so much with this one!! Survival shows always make me super emotional and I can't with them anymore tbh. I SWEAR I'M OVER AFTER GIRLS PLANET 999 AHHHH- I also COMPLETELY agree that even if a group is made solely for the purpose of promoting future groups, it still feels kind of useless when the final lineup is going to disband in a couple years or so anyways. #3 Yeah I agree. This stuff is creepy af, and kind of makes me never want to grow up wtf #4 I mean I see what you mean, tbh I prefer older groups to do chill, summer theme concepts more than cute concepts, if there not going to be doing mature concepts (kind of like Brave Girls) #5 LOL I don't even know what to say for this one because i've never really watched an entire episode of knowing bros
#3: well yes & no. i also see it as women saying, “hey we’re not kids anymore - i can play in my sexuality as a woman in my 20’s.” (since the age of adulthood in korea is 20). especially since at the time, majority of the girls who did the cover were in a group that focused on a cute concept. and this is normal in the west, however it’s handled better with k-idols, because at least they stress that they’re adults. think of Disney Channel stars like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato etc - desperate to break from their innocent image but going way overboard, and i believe they were barely 18... but the song is creepy tho. but take in, the lyrics are more or less the same as what other girl groups do now (even with underaged members).
another issue with the survival shows is that people make it into groups and get voted just because they’re pretty or the fans like them. the amount of shows where genuinely talented idols have lost to idols just because they were pretty. don’t get me wrong, i think everyone is talented, but i also think that fans give votes for the wrong reasons
That's the point of the show its been there since the beginning. The concept is that they are all friends in high school so they don't speak formally to each other despite the hosts being decades older than them.
Every other guests: senior actors, actresses, athletes, models and etc come to the show wearing school uniform. It's their concept, new classmates are transferring in to the school. Not only this allows the younger guest to talk more informally with the hosts that are likely double their age, the host are also more free to jest with older guests freely. Not an obsession with idols
That's what I thought as well! It may not be the best example when talking about childish concepts but for someone who doesn't know the full meaning behind it, it might just seem like a very playful/cute song due to the sound and playful dance
Knowing Bros is a lot better than Donnie and Conny on Weekly Idol tho. Like, they're not AMAZING, but Donny and Connie are just on another level of disrespectfuly
@#3 FINALLY SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT.. Its such a creepy song like- its giving very much grooming vibes.. 👁.... Its written by Jyp.. Like im not suprised.. I could go on but i don't have time lol
omg i literally love knowing bros, is so funny and the idols love to go there, i watch even when i dont stan the idols... it gives us the best memes, love it also the concept is that they can be free without using jondeamal (formal language) because they are all in school, also the girls weae pants when dancing or performing, i rlly dont get the problem, is such a good show
i love cute concepts and i think older groups can do it. being adult doesn't mean you don't like cute stuff anymore, so i'm sure there's older idols who actually enjoy doing cute concept. now the school uniform stuff is debatable of course but if it isn't sexualized i don't mind so much tbh 🤷♀️
honestly, most Korean comedians aren't funny at all, but the edition cover their jokes up with laughing tracks.... the only funny part about this shows are the idols themselves
About the ceremony of age thing ... I don't mind much, like we have Quinceañeras here in Latin America, basically means you are a woman ready to date as soon as you turn 15
Watching idols do aegyo (that are forced) just hurts my sensitive soul, I think it's better when the idols do it when they feel like it or if it's an idols nature for aegyo. Like Sunoo for example, I can't feel disappointed at it because it's so natural and he's obviously looking like he's okay with it with the reaction he shows afterwards
i feel like aegyo feeds into the stereotype that asians (particularly) are these soft, and child-like people, which is extremely weird and not true at all
YES i always found the whole adult ceremony thing so uncomfortable… i atleast hope the idols that perform it actually want to but i feel like that isn’t always the case
A perfect cutesy stage is mamamoo- waggy. It doesn’t dress them in uniforms and make them act like kids. They’re just having fun, being goofy and laughing at themselves
personally im not a big fan of aegyo when i got into kpop i didnt know i was signing up for this 😂 but as long as the idols are comfortable with it its fine i have seen many idols who are just naturally cute and like aegyo very much but there are also idols who arent really comfortable with it so aegyo shouldnt be forced
