Things Not To Say To Black Women

Whether it's people touching your hair, assuming you like to twerk, or treating you like an "exotic animal" on dating apps, black women regularly face a variety of racist and dehumanising presumptions. Here, eight women relate their experiences of the stereotypes they've faced - but also the strong sense of sisterhood they feel as a result.

Wow! Now that is terrible. Have you actually heard people say that to you? That's a barbaric thing to say to anybody. In all honesty, beautiful women exist in all races. Ugly people also exist in all races. Beautiful is not a race or a certain set of traits. Shame on those people who would ever have the nerve to say that to you.

@@meftnm "exotic" is offensive, as it others black people. Because society knows that if women, especially black women ever rise up and act on all their rights-- to vote, to assemble, to learn, to be happy that NOTHING could stop them! Its suppression of a population that the dominant class fears.... Be aggressive, be classy, be powerful, and rule the world-- Hell Be Michelle Obama! That's why she dealt with so much hate-- but she was classy and powerful when she let that shit bounce right off of her and kept doing good things! Someday people will realize that the amount of melanin in their skin and the genitals between their legs doesn't determine the amount of respect a person should be alotted.

Mentioning race in a "compliment" immediately takes the value out of it. Instead of saying things like: "you are so pretty for a black girl!" Or for a white person: "you have a big butt for a white girl!" Say things like: "you are so pretty!" Or for a white person:... don't say things about peoples butts.. thats weird. These easy fixes will make it so people wont resent you.

They don't even notice or realise that we aren't identical, even though we live in the same place. Tell me, wouldn't you find it weird if some random person said: "Where your ends at, fam?" or "Catch dat peng ting?", and expected you to know what that meant because Black Brits use those phrases, and your DNA should magically give you the answer or make you identify with it. No one is always strong. Black woman are people. Everybody is human and no one deserves to be dehumanised or have jokes made about them. Yes you are strong everyone is strong as a human but not all the time. If you don’t feel strong that is perfectly ok. We don’t need to g9 back to the stereotype of you’re not strong if you need help or if you show your tears or if you’re struggling. People struggle and black woman arent any different to any other human being. So why are they being treated differently? Stereotypes and people who believe it’s ok to base someone on what they look like or sound like make me so annoyed because a person isn’t just the exterior that everyone sees, they are also a person inside as well and humans have a personality each to their own. It’s 2019 come on people get over your self prejudiced and arrogant self and move on to the more important matters like equality or people being allowed their own opinions or global warming.

The aggressive statement gets me every time. Like someone will say something hurtful and then when I cry my voice gets pitchy like I don't even want to say louder, but my voice cracks. And they'll be like "Why are you so aggressive?" It's like you can't even reply after that without seeming like you are being aggressive.

To be a Black woman is for everyone to assume that you are being aggressive when you are going out of your way to speak as calmly and softly as possible, like you're trying to sooth a defensive animal.

Why, take offense if I mirror back to you what you did/said, if it was coming from a positive place? It works everytime. Lol And if they're honest folk (we all say stupid stuff at some juncture) it'll open up a dialogue about it.

Im a light brown skinned woman and I remember back in college one of my tutors said to me after meeting mother (who is the same complexion as me) I wasn’t expecting you mum to look like that I asked why she said I thought she’d be white I was okaaay 🤨but then she said to me so it’s your dad who’s white then I said no my dad is black she didn’t stop there with the disrespect she then went on to say to me “oh so your black black then” 😟 similar situations like this were unfortunately a norm to me growing up even at work my ‘blackness’ was questioned people would assume I’m mixed/race biracial but after i correct them and give an explanation my family tree (my parents and grandparents are black just my mum and grandma light skinned) there’s a shock and Ive even had people treat me differently after that realisation-not all black people are one shade we come in a wide variety of shades a skin tones ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
