If you're from Wales, you’ll have encountered all sorts of assumptions and jokes simply based on where you're from. Here, eight Welsh people talk about the most common statements they’re on the receiving end of - from questions about Wales being in England, to their feelings on Welsh celebs like Tom Jones and Charlotte Church.

All my family are welsh. I am genuinely gutted that I wasn’t brought up there. Dad speaks welsh, and it upsets me when people say “what’s the point, Welsh people speak English anyway”. You would be considered ignorant to tell a French person their language is irrelevant because most of them speak English too. It’s ridiculous.

I'll put it in a different sentence then what's the point of learning the worst language ever when not a lot of people can speak welsh in Wales and is not spoken in any other country the fact that there is 2 different welsh languages (north and south) tells a lot.

The sheep shagger thing comes from the English years ago because the punishment for having sex with sheep wasn't as bad as the punishment for stealing them, so if people were caught steeling sheep they would say they were having sex with it instead as they wouldn't be punished as badly, the English originally used this but because there are more sheep in wales it was more commonly used in wales, the Welsh adopted this tactic from the English but you heard it used more in wales because sheep theft happened more in wales, the English were just too dumb to catch on.

I am Romanian. 7 months ago I moved to wales. And I find that the welsh people have more in common with us, at a deeper level, then I will ever have with other nationalities from the west. Plus, from this video I found out that we both have a word that can't be translated in other language with the same depth of meaning. My word is ,,dor,, which is a feeling of longing for a lost love for example and they have ,,hiraeth,, which basically means the same thing. That shows me that their is a similarly way of understanding the world as some level between Romanian and welsh people. At least in this situation and from my 7 months experience in a few others. For example it was funny to see that my welsh friend when he heard for the first time traditional Romanian music did instinctively a gesture that we usually make when we listen to that music. So stop thinking your best than other people, I am sure you have some things to be proud in your culture to, but until you can translate ,,dor,, and ,,hiraeth,, with the same depth I am afraid your a bit behind. :)

Let me tell you, I live in North Wales. The places to Avoid are Wrexham, Caernarfon, Pwllheli, Rhyl, Flint. Llandudno and Bangor is probably one of the best places for a tourist to stay as it's in a good location, for those who want a more disclosed, private place to go maybe Betws Y Coed in Snowdonia National Park, Very nice in the summer with the river you can swim in. You can go to Aberfalls as well. Llamberis is the perfect place for a family, The lake is safe to swim in and is a kayaking lake as well with loads of activities in summer, also they have a kayak hire shop. If you want to be more North go to Rhosneigr Beach in Anglesey £5 entrance fee in summer cause it gets very busy. You can also go to Plas Menai which has loads of activities with accommodation and stuff. You can go to the Ski slopes in Llandudno, You can go on the Fastest Zip line in the world above Snowdon national park in Bethesda, or Even go to a trampoline park underground in a cave. or maybe go on the brand new Forest Coaster near Betws Y Coed. Looking for beautiful views? Go to North West Wales with beautiful holiday parks and ocean views. Feeling adventurous? Walk up Snowdon the tallest mountain in England and Wales, go Paintballing near Llamberis. Go on the fastest Rib ride in the world at Menai Bridge trust me it's fast I been on it. Also Menai bridge has spectacular views on the straights. Also was the place the brand new Robert Downey Film Dolittel was filmed. If you like flying? Go to Dinas Dinlle airport and fly on a helicopter above Snowdon national park, or you can even hire a one of those gyrocopter if that's what they call it things. Trust me you can't get bored in North Wales, you can only judge until you come.

This from a girl whose own town is a western outcrop nowhere near any sort of built up area and still hasn't fully worked out double glazing whilst I live in an area of 250,000 people 15 miles from the capital even if there does happen to be mountains around us. Years ago I had a job which entailed liaising with the police in London. I once made an enquiry to a police station, to find that the sergeant at the other end of the phone was a fellow South Walian - he was from Swansea, but I'm not. We chatted briefly about the old country before getting down to the business end of things. He asked me to hold while he got some paperwork from a filing cabinet and, as he was doing so, I overheard his conversation in the distance: "Found another ex-pat, sarge?", asked a voice - "Yeah", he replied, "from Neath. Sheep-shagging country". He returned and we continued our conversation, but before we said our goodbyes, I said, "Oh, and by the way, sergeant, I'd much rather be a sheep-shagger than a Swansea Jack". He was very apologetic, but I really didn't mind, and we both had a bloody good laugh about it.

When I got married (that was a mistake) my ex-wife and I took each other’s names and combined her Thomas with my Jones and became Thomas-Jones. When we went on honeymoon; the American lady on reception in our hotel said “You must be Welsh. Your surname is Tom Jones.” I laughed because I hadn’t realised that until they’d pointed it out. When I was a kid, I was in America and got talking to this guy that was sat on the table next to my family at a restaurant. We talked about being from Wales, and it came up that Catherine Zeta-Jones is also from Wales. We lived in Merthyr and Catherine was from Swansea which are about 30ish miles apart; he then told his partner that we were close neighbours with Catherine Zeta Jones! lol I realised he comes from a part of the world where 30 miles distance makes you next door neighbours; but for us - half our country’s population live in that space lol
