Things Pet Owners Do That Vets Love (Part 2) 

I am the "bad pet owner" when it comes to my own health but for my precious baby you best believe I am ORGANIZED and VIGILANT.

My daughter said something so funny regarding her dog's heath care. She said if a doctor told her she needed a procedure to save her life she'd have to go home and check her budget. But if the vet said that about her dog, she'd just start THROWING plastic at them. Not too far from true! 😅

I have one chameleon that is an absolute asshat. The vet nor the vet tech took me seriously when i said he hates all of humanity and only his size has stopped him from genociding us all. I warned them he bites, scratches, tailwhips and latches on and refuses to let go. They didnt believe me when i said treat him like a badly tenpered iguana not a chameleon. They regretted it instantly. Cant say they werent warned. And i brought chocolates so..... Most of my reptiles are absolutely docile and love the vet because they arent just coming in when they're sick and they know that the vet means hornworms. So 99% of the time, theyre there to get a bit of poking and prodding but nothing painful or invasive (especially since they can all but one open their mouth on command). But this one was a rescue in need of constant medical care for the rest of his life and whatever went on before me he hated all of humanity. He also let us know that frequently and with extreme prejudice.

Now I understand why the vet technician looked at me like I gave her solid gold when I handed over the Black Panther backpack that has a file folder with every piece of paper I've ever been given regarding my Bombay cat Daisy, all the way back to her shelter records, and the empty boxes of every medication and flea treatment I've ever used. She asked if she could copy everything for their records, and when I said, "of course" she took off like she was terrified I would change my mind. I also keep photos of the labels of what she's currently eating, including treats, on my phone to show the vet. Along with the label of the dander reducing dry shampoo I use. And lastly, I try my best to ensure she has all claws capped and bring her favorite treat to keep her calm. The vet usually remarks on how thorough she was able to examine her because of this, and now I know why. I always thought doing these things was basic sense when it came to owning a pet. It's the only thing you as a human can do to ensure they receive the best care, which is what you promised upon taking the animal into your home and your life.

Reading the discharge papers is how I know the vet lied to me about my dog not having a seizure 😡 She was on a TON of medication and a special diet to manage the seizures until we could operate. Vet authorised the ICU staff to feed normal recovery food and BAM. Seizure. Vet swore up and down when we collected the dog that nothing had happened. But lo and behold in the paperwork... a seizure. Thank you, ICU nurse, for tour record keeping.

😂 Well. I think I just figured out why my vet’s office can always find room for us on the schedule.

First time I took my dog to the new vet, she was like 8 months pregnant. The vet, not the dog. She was so great with him, that I made her a baby quilt. In two weeks. Fastest quilt I ever made. Does that count? I may have brought them some xmas baking as well.

We doctors also love when our human patients do every one of these things. And it IS rare 😂

I did give a big box of MoonPies to the surgeon and staff who helped out our cat MoonPie.

I clip my cat's nails before going to the vet. He does not tend t swipe, but they are very thankful.

LOL, my dog comes in pre-muzzeled and every piece of equipment on him to make sure he and the vets + techs are safe I am also the one that if they need me to be on the floor with my baby rocking and controlling him I am that person. I don't take his medications but I do type it out in a document that can be emailed, as well as scanned documents from every vet visit. The keeping medications and all the info about them helped my husband's doctor, so I do that with him too. When he got snipped the Dr. asked my husband, "since our last visit do you know what meds they put you on?" and me husband shrugged and I opened the app I keep his list on and gave him it to go through.

My 2 dobermans have never shown aggression to anyone, but i bring them in to the vet *already* muzzled. You just never know what could happen and its not worth the risk. Especially if they are sick or injured. Animals do not act like themselves when they are sick or hurt, so you just dont know. I also will do anything myself that the vet wants me to do. My husband and/or I will pick them up and put them on the table ourselves and anything else that needs to be done.

I was a vet tech for a few years, and I've got a couple of stories of "don't warn the professionals about the animal's aggression" stories. 2 dogs. One small dog was in for a dental, and bit me right under the chin when I was getting him out of the kennel. When the owner was told about this, she casually mentioned that no groomers would see him, because of his history of kennel aggression. Which really would have been nice to know before I needed to go to the ER. Another small dog, I was doing the preliminary exam on, getting vitals. He had this little jersey on, and as I was going to put my stethoscope under it, because i couldn't hear correctly over it, he nails both of my hands at lightning speed. Then the owner is like, "oh, by the way, he can be a little nippy." A warning BEFORE he bit me would have been nice. Bonus injury story: we get this cat in who needs X-rays. He's been well-behaved enough up until that point, that all my coworkers told me to just handle him solo. He decides he doesn't like the restraint for the rads, reaches a paw up, and splits my nostril clean in two. The owner was pissed that the human hospital called animal control, because I needed my nose stitched back together, and they were legally required to. She blamed the clinic. I blame my coworkers for not helping me, even after I told them he was getting fractious

I did the first one for myself last time I went to the ER! The nurse who took down my information was very pleased, I just wasn't sure if my notes were up to date and I knew I was in too much pain to remember, so I threw all my pill bottles in a paper bag and took it with me 😅

My guinea pig was wiggly, but never once bit the vet. He rarely had issues, as he was a very healthy and happy boy. He had a broken nail once, and pink eye. But those were taken care of and he bounced back very quickly. His vet was blatantly sad when he diagnosed Kona with a benign tumor that was pushing on his bowels, leading to abnormal poops, and him being a 6 year old guinea pig, surgery wasn't the best option for him. When he passed, I brought his vet some cookies I made, saying thank you to him for taking such good care of my boy for these past few years. Miss that little man everyday.

Not a vet but a retired nurse and this applies across the board for all species 😂

Glad to know my warnings were appreciated. Even though she needed gabapentin to go to the vet I still warned the vet techs to count their fingers before and after attending my baby.

As a technician I appreciate so much when people are able to give me a budget to work with! We understand the vet is expensive!! So rather than have the dvm and me pull up an extensive full estimate with all the recommendations and then be told that "oh, we cant do any of that" I'd much rather be told honestly from the beginning what type of budget we can work with. And really the dvm and techs are much more likely to try and do work arounds if we have a number to work with rather than just being told its too expensive. Sure, I love the clients who are able to say that they dont care about the price and to just do anything, but thats not everyones situation!

Best thing Ive ever done for my vets: Properly socialized and trained my dogs and horses. It makes their job SO much easier.

You can bribe almost any customer serving person with snacks. They can always use some solidified happiness to counter all the BS they have to deal with. 😅

Before my girl passed on, I kept print outs of all her records in a file I stored in the pocket of her carrier, and all the lables of her medication in a ziplock baggie taped to the file. I'd keep notes in my weekly planner of her appointment dates and procedures, and a checklist of medications and corrusponding dates. I had her for 14 years before her asthma was untreatable and we had to make the descision to say goodbye while she still had a good last day in her. My kitten doesn't have asthma, but I've noticed concerning early symptoms of weight loss, so now she's on a weight gain diet and dewormer while I document everything before trying the vet. I'm amused and annoyed to report the issue seems to be she forgets to eat, and moving her dry food to her favorite play area has increased her appatite, and she is enjoying her added wet food breakfast and lunches, and is back up to a healthy weight

I always let the vet tech know that Bubba needs to be a purrito. He's the sweetest baby, but he can't help but be defensive when he's scared.

My Chow is a rescue. Nobody realized before I got him home that he'd been hit by a car while a stray. So with that backstory, I have a beloved dog with multiple unset broken bones from (now) 7 years ago. He had respiratory, eye, and ear infections. His eyes continue to tend to have issues. He has multiple broken teeth from the accident. He takes three meds plus supplements. I keep a file of his vet visits including X-rays and bring that with me. I read everything. He's more comfortable being handled if I'm with him, and I'll hold his head to make the vet more comfortable doing the exam. I remind where the injuries are to avoid a sensitive/bad reaction. I bring a muzzle, too, and he's accustomed to that. Here's what I appreciate: vets and techs who understand when I say I need to "introduce" them to my dog if they're going to take him away to do things. It creates as much trust as possible. Too often they're dismissive and expect that grabbing the leash and walking away is all that should be expected. Chows are a trust based relationship dog. He trusts me more than anyone, and he trusts me to keep him safe. When he doesn't know you, he's going to resist going with you. You're not dragging a 70 lb Chow against his will. I've seen him turn into an alligator, bucking and spinning, with animal control and I've seen him utterly shut down when being forced to move away from me. Why do this when it's only going to create a problem when you expect to draw blood or give injections? Vets admit they don't like dealing with Chows. But the most important part of dealing with a Chow is that they must have an owner who has gained their dog's trust and will advocate for their needs. And when they do, vets and techs must listen to the advocate. ❤

I rescued a feral kitten, and that thing was wild but nearly dead. Wasn't eating yet and freezing. Warmed it up and forced milk, etc, down. No vets near me, and it started getting better overnight. And then, after a couple of days, that thing was climbing me and scratching the hell out of me with attacks. Rang the vet for an appointment and explained everything. It took about a week to see them. Warned them about the Kitten, etc. So they were ready, and the darn thing purr and purr and rubbed itself against the vets hand. She looked at me and said, it's a friendly Feral. I rolled my eyes and held up my hands and arms to show them. That darn cat still wants to fight me and everything in its path, except the Vets.

#6 was me when the lump on my snake's neck tripled in size in a handful of months. The cheaper option was to try and get a biopsy from samples drawn with a needle, which wasn't even guaranteed to work. Instead, while I did have to wait a few months for the funds, I paid to have the entire lump surgically removed and sent to a lab. Good thing too, because it ended up being a tumor. Some people called me insane for spending that money, but he's my little guy and my responsibility.

How is this all NOT happening? I have two binders for my two pups. They contain all their medical records, sorted by date, tabbed by year. The binders also contain their adoption records, chip documentation, AKC registration info, diet and snack information (brand, flavor and frequency) as well as a photo of the front and back of the packages. And then, I have photos of their prescriptions and the actual medication (front and back) with the date the photos were taken. My vet has cared for my pups since I adopted them at 10 weeks old and they adore my pups! I trained my pups from the start to be comfortable with being touched, poked, prodded, etc, so my vet is always happy to see us. This vet also cared for my previous two dogs, so they know what to expect with me. I realize I’m a bit overboard, but I can’t believe people don’t do at least the things in this clip. 🤦‍♀️

My sweet precious baby girl, she's going to be 11 this month, my parents didn't ask ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT HER SURGERY!!!!! i had to make sure they brought home instructions to care for her after her surgery (she had a tumor) and texted my parents a list of questions and i'm genuinely happy to hear you don't mind being asked questions....

My mom did almost all of this for me going to doctors when I was growing up so she naturally also did it for our pets. (This was especially because we took in disabled cats that required specialized care.) She was shocked to find out no one else did this. I have continued that legacy since I know it makes the entire process easier when you’re caring for disabled kitties.

I noticed my cat was walking funny one time and i forgot to correlate it to the fact that id just given him his neds like not even 1hr prior to me witnessing his oddities. So i took him to the ER and told the nurse "hes a bit...spicy" and she glowed bc spicy tux cats are her fave. He came back as being dehydrated, lol but she told me "youre doing an excellent job in keeping up on his health! Most cat owners we see dont even do the bare minimum, ao thank you for your diligence! Whatever youre doing at home, keep it up bc (aside from his blatter condition) hes in excellent health!"

I have a very docile lovey-dovey huge black tom named Coal. These vets and vet techs saved his life, and he knows it. He is very flirty, he’ll purr and weave in their legs while we chat about him during his yearly checkup. He absolutely does NOT like getting his yearly shots. It makes him bitey! I always warn them. I also make the special request for the shots not be in his hips, and he behaves much better when it’s given in his scruff.

Most of these commenters are the opposite of Karens. We need more of you!

When we switched vets, I brought all of the vet's previous notes and medical records of my dog, and she looked so grateful and happy. 😆

God I love the video concept of people telling me the things I’m doing RIGHT. I just realized I need so much more of this. I have intense chronic anxiety and my brain is always telling me I’m doing any and everything wrong. “Here’s what you’re doing wrong” lists don’t tell a body what TO do, so thank you for this!

I weigh my pets every month (more often if there are any concerns) and my vet really appreciated me bringing it in. She said seeing the normal range of her weight and the patterns helped narrow down what was wrong, and it was easier to measure than “I think she’s eating a little less than normal”

everyday i’m glad my cat is pretty chill at the vet. well i mean he’s terrified but he’s never tried to whack or bite anyone. he did try to hide once but we got him

My mom warned the vet tech numerous times not to touch her dog without him having a muzzle on first or letting her help, because the dog has anxiety and nips. The vet tech ignored her and got nipped. The dog was put in isolation and assessed for rabies and aggression. He got cleared after a few weeks. But it was more stress and BS for everyone. I'm glad the vet in this vid actually appreciates getting helpful information from pet owners.

I started as a vet assistant intern only a month ago and I'm loving it!! I totally agree on all of this lol. We had a lady bring in COPIES of the paperwork too for us to keep so we didn't have to scan it, and emailed DIGITAL COPIES and we did her dog's nail trim and ear cleaning for free haha

Now I understand why my vets always seem so enthusiastic to see my mother and I. Over time we have had 2 dogs and 3 cats, and we've kept all their files, read over everything, warned them about potential aggressiveness and especially where they don't like to be touched, and basically the whole video. We also have never had more than 2 pets at once so we agree who is in charge of which pet that day if both are going in (luckily not had both go in at the same time for injury, if they're both there it's for check up and booster vaccinations) so I think they appreciate us being organised too.

Because of this video, I arrived at my rabbbit's last veterinary appointment with a huge tray of seasonal cookies for the staff. I really appreciate them and it was nice knowing something that could make their day better.

As medical doctor, do that for humans too! (Although not the muzzle part, we're sadly not legally allowed, but trust me, we wish we could sometimes 😂).

Every Christmas I make candies and cookies and always make up a box for my vet. They deserve it.

I once took a picture of the vomiting and recorded a video of how the cat behaved strangely. I decided that it was easier to show than to try to describe it. At the clinic, the veterinarian thanked me very much and looked at me as if she was going to hug me😅

Pro Tip - hospital staff like treats too! Im a frequent flyer in our city hospital and i like to give treats to my nurses.

My moms cat is very fractious with me and the vets, i always warn them. My cat is a goodboy but has feline hyperesthesia so i warn them that he's never harmed anyone but because of the nature of his condition lets get a towel and make a purrito and tell them where is most common pain is. Both my mom's and my service dogs are muzzle trained. Its a simple thing to do but it makes life easier for you, the vet and your animal to communicate, read instructions and ask questions.

Set up my cat’s annual appt yesterday and the tech got so excited that I said I’d bring the stool sample even though she told me most people opt out of testing it if it’s an indoor cat. Peace of mind is always worth it to me and it was cute hearing her excitement too 😂

That last item is why we waited an entire year before we adopted another pet. I want to make medical decisions for my pet based on what they need, not on what I can afford.

Our grumpy old cat (RIP Ted) used to sulk and growl, though he never actually swiped. Our current little one loves to Explore Everything In Detail and gets too distracted to be angry 😂

Our vet gave us a 5 yay review. It was in our paper work. But we got the review for following her diet and feeding advise. Our cat went from overweight to perfect weight. Oh sure he acts like he's always hungry but that's cause he went from always having dry food in his dish to 4 meals of wet food a day.

In reverse, I love when veterinaries pet my dog, tells him he is a good dog, a good boy, and laughs at him when he is being goofy because of the praise 🥰

I recently had to take my ginger cat, Hallie, to the vet. She wasn't eating, lethargic, not drinking water, or going to the litterbox. Before they even got her out of the carrier, I forewarned them that she could and would use her claws, on all four paws. She grows extra feet with me when I try to cut her nails or try to exam her myself. Damn if she didn't behave herself like a little lady with them. 😂❤

As a vet assistant studying to become a vet tech I definitely agree with everything he said

I call my Vet all the time about medication instructions.. And calls me guardedly when he is getting ready suggest a expensive test.. But i fricking pay because seriously Dogs are fricking awesome..

My pets are both very mouthy creatures (I have a cat and a dog) so whenever the vet tries to give my pets an oral exam, I volunteer to open my pets' mouths for them to look at whatever they need for however long because I can tell they're worried about getting bit, even if my animals have been on their best behavior up to that point. (and also I've taught my animals to be okay with me messing with them to brush their teeth and give them meds whenever it's needed.)

I had a bestie and neighbor who had a high string part Persian dumpster rescue. I would take it to the vet for her, she would hype out worse than the cat. I would bring my heavy winter coat and lined split leather gloves and would dress up. Even with three doses of sedative it would still be a nightmare. I wasn’t afraid to help, the vet tech in past the elbow gauntlets and a full leather apron and I could manage 8 pounds of cat for the vet. Even scruffing her was dangerous… and they didn’t have head bubbles which is what that poor kitty needed.

the vet's phone!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I read all the paperwork and view my boys records on their vet's app. and they all know my cat's reputation.... I keep all their records too!

I’m definitely the type that brings more information than you likely actually want 😂 Pro tip: go online and print out a picture of your animal’s food/treat bags and the nutrition labels for them, plus ingredient lists for any cleaner or air freshener you use in the house if you think it’s relevant.

I brought all meds with my pet, and I bring all mine including over the counter when I see a doctor for myself. It is possible they do not have the newest ones if I went to an ER, or urgent care.

My cats aren’t defensive or aggressive at all at the vet, but they do show a lot of fear, so I always reassure the vets handling them they won’t lash out. It’s nice to be able to work and not be worried about scratches and bites, you know?

my boy is 100lbs and VERY nervous at the vet. i call ahead of time and get them to organize some mild sedatives for me to pick up prior to the appointment. i also make him wear a basket muzzle, which he hates, but the vet’s safety is priority when i bring my boy in.

The warning cat parent was me at the emergency vet 😆 They put his name on the door's whiteboard, and then I wrote "spicy" underneath. Anytime anyone approached his carrier, I was like, "Fair warning, I can't guarantee he won't try and bite you." He's a snuggle bug with me, but I have no illusions about how he's like with strangers.

As a human healthcare worker I would appreciate all these too, including that biting part 😂

I probably could have done better about paperwork over the years... but it's good to know what vets want/expect! I appreciate these videos!

I am TERRIBLE when it comes to my own health, but that’s cause I know my limits and what my body will put up with before it gives me the middle finger (I have a couple different chronic health conditions that I’m very well-versed in dealing with lol) but when it comes to my cat, I am hypervigilant cause I know he can’t verbalize what’s going on and I’m all he’s got so he gets the gold star treatment while I’m ignoring my medications and aids cause I can do this myself dammit 😅

We take our dogs in every six months for check ups and get a complete blood panel done yearly. New vets to the practice try to tell us we don’t need the expensive full panels, but we keep a file at home on each dog and we research when certain values change. We trust our vets fully, but they are human and super busy and could miss something we might catch early. We had a pup diagnosed with Addison disease, the techs would forget so I would always remind them to use the “tiger tube” to check his thyroid. It saved everyone time. He lived for 17 years with all of us working together. When he passes, they sent us a card with all their personal comments. I have all their cards from all our babies passing.

I thought I was being annoying when I bother the vet with questions after...

Aw, this is the best type of pet owner to be.

My vets office is in love with my boy for one big reason…he has been trained to go sit on the scale and wait (I can’t take credit for that sadly, he’s a guide dog). I’ve seen them wrangle dogs on and off that thing and my guy just hops on and sits down, waiting for his treat.

I recently had to take my (otherwise very healthy) doggo to the vet. I gave them a detailed summary and timeline, didn't mind waiting an extra half an hour, went with their recommendations for what's actually best for my dog and then reminded them to charge me correctly (which they didn't end up doing). Lets make these things more common place - vets are having one of the hardest jobs as it is, we can do a little that goes a long way. (I'm also totally gonna bake for his next dental, thanks for the tip!)

#3 the problem is sometimes even when you do give them warning the techs dont listen. We had a rottie who was very kennel protective and we told them DO NOT put her in a cage. Put her in a room. She'll go in fine but she will not come out. Sure enough, they put her in a cage and reached in to take the lead and buddy nearly lost a finger. They had to call us back to let her out of the cage because she wouldnt leave and wouldnt let anyone touch her. From then on, if she had to be left at the vet, they kept her in a room, no cage.

Man my vets must love me, because I have all of Sadie’s records on hand at all times just in case, I always give gifts to the staff, I always have her list of meds on hand, and we never have to worry about nipping since she LOVES the vet (no, seriously, so love them! She gets so much attention and she’s a total social butterfly). My 14 year old baby is a sweet spoiled Cocker Spaniel. Edit: there was one time even the doctors where giving me the choice of changing meds for her issue or getting a blood test. I did the blood test, and good thing I did, she needed to be hospitalized for 24 hours on drip meds. Luckily it was caught quick enough that it was only 24 hours and not the 3 days they though it was going to be. I will do ANYTHING to make sure my baby is safe and happy!

This makes me so happy! I always ask the vet what they would do if it were their pet and go with their recommendation, and I always felt like I was being annoying lol. So glad it is appreciated on your side because I know that I am not an expert so it is definitely appreciated on my side!

My rabbit had to stay in ICU for 3 days a couple months ago and they went through all the things he needed and the charges that came with them and as soon as they said $2,300 I said *do it. Please save him.* I would never spend that much money on myself but you can't put a price on my baby boy.

Honestly, I didn't think about having a record of everything my pet has gone through medically - I should start doing that

One of my cats gets really aggressive when being handled in any way he doesn't like, but he does a lot better if we are holding him instead of the vet tech or him being on the table. Vets that let us hold him during certain parts of the exam are the best, so we don't have to risk (and afford) fully sedating him!!!

I took a couple dozen donuts to the vet next to where I work one time. The day before 2 techs helped me push my car to a gas pump after someone siphoned my gas. I’d just filled up that morning on my way in. Everyone loves snacks.

Haha regular doctors would love patients who did this stuff as well 😂😂😂

My cat had started coughing pretty badly so I made an appointment with my vet. During the two weeks before they could see him I started recording every fit he had. Time of day, length, severity, pollen levels outside, humidity inside and out, temperature, how many he’d had that day, sound, everything I could think of. My vet looked at me like she wanted to marry me.

I'm a hand (cleaning the place and keeping an eye animals) We definitely appreciate snacks... and the occasional pizza... yes someone bought us pizza ... there appointment was same said as pizza too... we all were shocked and drooling (at the pizza I mean 😅)

I always do most of these, especially the last one. My cats have excellent insurance, i may as well use it. I suck at keeping printed copies of medical records, though. Lucky we have had the same vet for 20 years.

The fact that people need to learn these lessons of basic civility and common sense makes me so sad.

I once had an owner come in with a TYPED list of medications. It was like Christmas had come early. An owner with medical records? That's like seeing a flying pig.

Oof. The one about warning about aggression. I took my mom’s feral cat to the vet once for a geriatric panel. I warned the tech multiple times that she wasn’t friendly but she kept reassuring me that it was fine. The vet came in and as they were turning the cat she lashed out and left a sizable gash in the tech’s arm. The vet ended the visit there. Which I completely understand! The tech’s health and safety come first. But she did take responsibility for ignoring my warnings. Sigh… still need that panel, at some point.
