She's a perfect example of why we think most are uneducated. Not in a speaking English sense, but the understanding.

Understand what? She explains dating perfectly, at least here in the Philippines. "dating" in the Philippines does not mean you're in a relationship. It's just a cultural difference. "She say's "direct" mean "straightforward"

Thanks for the interesting video. Two things come to mind. 1. Language: the confusion is about the definition and/or the experience associated with the word. She is confused about the meaning of dates and going on a date. So it's about clear communication. With her friends, she can ask, 'have you spent any time with Jack?' The answer would be, 'yes, we once went out for dinner.' There is no relationship implication. 'Did you have a relationship with Jack?' That is a different question. 2. When dealing with employees and fellow workers, it is important to be direct and honest. Providing honest, constructive feedback with the intent on helping the employee be better and more efficient at their job is key. You are not attacking the person. The key is in the delivery of the information. The boss who throws things makes his behaviour the issue, not the message. If you quietly explain what the employee is doing and make constructive suggestions, the employee will be grateful rather than resentful or hurt. You want to elevate their energy, not depress it.

anytime someone says 'all' or 'most' when referring to a group of people (foreigners, women, Asians, etc.) I start to tune out a bit. ONe thing about a number of Filipinos that I don't care for is that there seems to be a tendency to tell them what they want to hear. I recall contacting a massage spa and asking for two male masseurs. They said yes. I followed up--do you have any MALE massage therapists. FINally after some hemming and hawing, they admitted all their therapists were female. Wasted my time. Turned me off of the place. Foreigners might be TOO direct at times, but Filipinos can also be obtuse and extremely vague.

What a sweetie! I will be happy to bring her to Chicago in January. That will explain away a lot of her concerns. Demandingly direct! Everything rushed! Sloppy snow! Intensely cold wind! She'll be dreaming of home after only three days.

When we (USA) learn, say French, and think we speak it well, we go to France and find they think we speak terribly. English is not your language. We mean it as a compliment when we say you speak it well. Most of our youth can't speak English properly. I'm not even sure if it qualifies as English anymore.

She’s very self opinionated. Just because she doesn’t think it’s a compliment, she’s not speaking for most Filipinos. I’ve been involved with the phils since 2005 met many Filipinos and heard different abilities in speaking English, whenever I’ve complicated them on their English ability they’ve been very happy and good about themselves.

There is a difference between dating and courting I believe but a lot of it will depend on who you talk to. Foreigners tend to date casual where Filipina's generally want exclusivity right from the beginning. What I have found is most foreigners don't have 'the talk' with the filipina they are seeing and so a lot of it is left ambigious instread of asking what the desired perameters of the 'relationship' are. Since dating in the west and dating in the Philippines is so different, it really is the responsibility of the foreigner to be clear on where SHE is at with what is going on. As for education, I have a lot to say about the Philippine education system and not a lot of it is very good. I have experienced the system from Grade 2 up to College and what I have found is much of it is abysmal. Teachers are not respected at all, students (and parents in meetins and events) are talking while trying to teach, on their phones, not paying attention, just complete disrespect. Also the teachers then just pass everyone without really taking the time to really dig into who may need help and who does not. I have seen students just copy copy everything from their classmates and then graduate with high marks yet still know next to nothing about their courses. It makes me sad what I have seen in this regard as education is so essential to growth and understanding. Granted, much of this was experienced in the provience and so I have no experience in the cities. A real shame is the lack of understanding of how rice effects the body. So much rice is consumed and this attributes to so much unhealthyness in the Filippines. Too much rice just adds weight to a person because of how the body processes rice. It is one thing to have a cup of rice with your meal but when meals consist of 5 cups of rice and then a small portion of meat, it is really not healthy.

I noticed there is a certain arrogance in these comments about their English in relation to the Filipinos. Their English is fully realized. It is a different dialect of English than what many of us speak here in the US. It would be equally valid for Filipinos to criticize American's comprehension and use of English. Consider that Londoner could just as self-righteously look down on us for mangling their language because it does not conform to their own.

She gotta understand that she speak two languages. I can only speak one barely. She gotta get over that. When someone says , “ you speak english”, they may be happy to have someone to communicate with. They may not be gauging her intelligence level. And lastly we come here for a change from the norm , cheaper prices and the beaches. Lol

She claims that she has gone to a university, maybe it was just a visit, ha ha. When she says that foreigners to Filipinos: Oh, You speak English very good, proper programmer, would’ve been for a foreigner to say: Oh, you speak English well. I doubt you went to college, and I disagree with a lot of things that she commented on, especially when she says most foreigners.
