The things that will break or fail in your FJ Cruiser, and how to modify your FJ Cruiser to fix these issues. I only mention the things that are specific to the FJ Cruiser. Things that are more common amongst all cars (or are failures that result in wear and tear) are not included. I hope this was helpful!

I had a 2008 FJ, bright yellow (we called it the short bus). Owned it 6 years never had anything break on it with 60,000 miles. I lived in Seattle and I would pick up my coworkers when the weather was bad. Now I own a 2007 FJ. I bought it in 2018 and it only had 50,000 miles on it. 6-speed manual. Not even a scratch on the skid plate. It's so reliable and fun to drive. Where I live now, every day is an offroad adventure.

Steering wheel chatter was built in the original FJ's so your wrists didn't get belted to pieces on gravel roads. The short wheel based cruisers of the 70's an 80's were the same. It makes them fun to drive

Don’t forget about the bearings and axle seals! I also recommend upgrading the exhaust. It bends easily off-roading. An additional comment on the windshield.... don’t use aftermarket glass and definitely replace the upper trim shield with the windshield. FJs rock!

For the 2010 - 2014 FJ's, the transfer case and transmission breathers were extended into the engine bay next to the battery. But they left the rear diff and e-locker breathers the same. The only troublesome part I've had on my 2012 TT is the MG/CLT relay, which I've had to replace twice. Another annoying thing is the drive shaft slip yoke. It has a tendency to stick. So when you come to a stop, when it lets go you get a feeling like you've been bumped from behind. The solution is to keep the slip yoke well greased.

2007 FJ. 310,000KM currently. Only owned it for 2 years. Failures: Alternator - died when backing into my driveway, pretty easy replacement done by myself in the driveway for a couple hundred $. Seized brake calipers - front and rear, at different times. Sway bar bushings. Transmission 'shudder' - partial flush on the trans fluid and added 'anti-shudder' additive. Passenger side CV boot torn, replaced both inner and outer boots myself with factory Toyota boots. Replaced (what appeared to be original) shocks with Bilstein 5100's - much better ride, and added a 1" lift while at it - shocks hadn't failed, but at 300,000+KM on them, it was time.

The Lean is normal when you lifted it you needed to add 1/4 spacer on drivers side strut tower. This takes the lean out. When ony the driver is in vehicle and the gas tank right under the driver you have more weight on that side. You can buy lift springs and the good ones will have 1 spring a little taller to compensate for the lean. I own a 2010 in iceburg white myself. Great rigs.

For "steering wheel chatter", there's a little plastic pin that keeps upper column true with lower column. The reason for the plastic pin is due to safety. In the event of a collision, this pin is sheared, and the steering column is designed to collapse in on itself. You might have inadvertently sheared it by turning the wheel without assist of power steering. I made this mistake on mine when working on the car. You can either replace the column, have yours spot welded, or live with it. 🙂

I've got ~210,000+ miles and I tow a full-sized trailer with mine. When I bought it, it came with the steering wheel fluid leaking. I fixed it the same week. Since then, the only thing that's "broken" is the headlamps and one of my battery fuses rusted and needed replacing. I did my brakes once in 2021. That's about it. Not a single rattle or squeak. I think my FJ is a starfish and repairs himself so as not to inconvenience me. 🥰 But also I regularly do full checks at the mechanic and tell them to fix anything they find broken. They get so excited but then never find anything. 😅 Happy travels!

The surprising one I ran in to is the wheel studs. They are super soft metal. I snapped one off hand tighting, then looked at the rest and several others were elongate. they can be replaced with modified lexus studs; but, strange to build such a great off-road machine and cheap-out on the studs.

I've got a 3rd gen 4runner, but I love Toyotas; therefore, I subscribed! I just got some rebuilding the entire front-end! Newer version SPC UCA's, and Dobinsons IMS shocks and their tallest springs, because I plan to upgrade all the bumpers and ad new sliders. I replaced the lower ball joints 1st, then the LCA's bushings with Whiteline. I also replaced the steering rack, and sway bar bushing with Energy Suspension. After this I plan on rebuilding the rear-end suspension, but need some time... 2 days of non-stop work at it feels as if all 7 dwarves beat the shit out of me with clubs for hours! The LCA's bushings and fitting the washers really kicked my ass! It looks funny to as the front-end is up like a bro-dozer. Lol It will level out nicely when the rear lift is done. Your steering wheel chatter is a result of the needle bearings being worn out inside the front differential where the cv axles enter the front diff. There is a replacement kit from East Coast Gear Supply which replaces them with needle bearing replacement sleeves. Be sure to get the needle bearing removal tool and sleeve install tool. Info is on ECGS website. This would also be a great time to upgrade the cx axle inner boots with heavy duty ones. Can all be done in a day in the driveway.

Great vid! I hope I won’t have to doing a transfer case fix. Mine’s still working (knock on wood). Question: u mentioned there were multiple breathers. I of the ones in engine bay which are high enough for me not to worry about since if water is at that level, I’m already in trouble. I relocated my rear diff breather to the gas tank inlet. Am I missing any others? And are those at the same height as the other brothers in the engine bay? One thing that stopped working, and I can’t seem to find how to fix it is: the light on the dash that indicates that my headlights are on. Pls give me some direction. Second thing: the automatic shut off of my headlight doesn’t work anymore. Killed my battery becuz of it. Advice? Lastly, the automatic driver side window lowering switch lowers the window but doesn’t one touch anymore. Again, great content. Would love to head up your way sometime for an overlanding trip. I’m in SF ca.
@stokedtour
@stokedtour 3 года назад
Thanks! What year FJ do you have? And what transmission? For my 09 MT, there is a transfer case breather that is clipped via a rubber hose to the back of the engine block and another breather that is just on the surface of the transmission block (similar to how the rear diff breather is on the casing of the unit). I was able to unclip the transfer case breather and extend higher, but I couldn't do anything about the transmission breather since I had to stick my entire arm into the space between the firewall and engine block to find it with my fingers. The only way you can get at that one is if you took apart the transmission haha. As for the light on the dash, my FJ doesn't seem to have one that indicates that my low beam headlights are on...i only have a high beam indicator. Did they add this light on later models?? Also yes! I'm sure we will meet on the road someday!

Hey man. Nice video! Love the FJ content. I have an 07 FJ myself with 220k miles (about 354k km). Bought it used with 140k on the clock. So far it's been ridiculously reliable for me. I maintain it meticulously and do my own fluid/ oil changes and spark plugs. I've had a few things break/go bad for me. Including: power steering pump (twice), rear diff bearings, brakes (twice), wheel bearing, serpentine belt, windshield (three times 😬), aaaand my transfer case needed replacing. Honestly a pretty low maintenance rig given the maintenance. The transfer case replacement was unexpected, but I guess it got contaminated somehow? Hopefully the engine and transmission last a while with good maintenance. Trying to get this beast to 300k miles. And yeah, I'd love to see an in depth vid on the diff breathers. Been wanting to do that mod since moving to the pacific northwest. Cheers 🍻

I've had my 07 FJ for about 30K mi over the last 3 years. I've done the batter, breaks(all 4 caliper, rotor, pads), steering universal joint (stupid rust), tires and oil changes. The dealer had just replaced the rear axle gear set and locker. The cars reliability is just boring. I took it on a 600 mile trip with 150 miles of off roading and it never complained even a little. Although I was very over loaded and probably will need a set of wheel bearings a bit early in the back. But that's totally my fault.
@thomasmullins1783

The early autos have torque converter problems if you don't 1) follow transmission maintenance and 2) add a transmission cooler. For some reason Toyota didn't add an aux cooler and it allows the trans to overheat

I've got a 2012 FJ AT, and I am experiencing steering wheel jerking if I drive over rough terrain or dips in the road etc., the steering wheel will violently jerk in whatever direction the dip is. I don't have any lift or modification, and just 17" wheels with Bridgestone Dueler tires. I also notice serious skipping across the road at highway speeds if there is a bump across the road, I can feel the rear end go sideways. I've got new struts and shocks, did not solve that issue. I've asked mechanics about the steering wheel issues as well as the feeling of not being planted on the road, and they said everything looks fine..... I havent driven another FJ so I don't know whats normal and what's not. Any suggestions?

Only thing that has worn out so far was my steering kingpin shaft thing, FJ only had 45k KM on it. I've owned it since new (2014) and that was only thing that failed, I'm at 98k KM now and nothing else has been changed other then Oils and a new set of tires 3 months ago. Bonus is I haven't lost a penny on it yet value and mechanically wise.

My FJ kinda has that steering clunk/clatter shit and when going over bumps it gets knocked around. Kinda like a bad tie rod but my tie rods are fine. I ordered the upper and lower intermediate steering shaft parts which should be the fix. I would look at those.

Have a question, I have a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser two wheel drive automatic and the ABS and the differential light came on when driving on freeway and won't turn off back wheel skids when I turn under 10 miles, I changed the ABS speed sensors and the wire for the speed sensors on the back nothing ABS lights are still on I did run into some heavy mud-puddles when it was raining. Any ideas?😢

I bought my 2011 FJ from a private dealer at 96k miles and i’m at 120k now, it looks like the guy had some aftermarket old man emu shocks installed but idk how much the vehicle is lifted. Upper and lower control arm ball joints as well as outer tie rod ball joints do i need to replace my upper control arms with more length?

I got an fj, got this annoying shaking sound that I can figure out where it’s coming from and it happens when I pass a spear bump or sometimes when I’m above 80km/hr… and I also got an oil pressure alert light on after servicing the car… ( I changed the oil filter again and it went off after a while

I changed my driver side wheel bearing after it had gone bad. I hear it's common failure on all large vehicles especially if you go with larger tires.

Got my 07 with 200,000 kms on it. Ive now got it up to 345 xxx. Mechanics were shocked when they saw how good of condition it is in. Only downside ,, frame rust -_-. Had to replace my exhaust, both front and rear brakes, ac compressor and lifted the front 2.5 inch attached a 3/4 inch disc on top of the driver side puck and it leveled that driver side dip.
@stokedtour
@stokedtour 3 года назад
Yeah frame rust is a big issue on these things if you live in the salt belt. A lot of the ones i looked at in Canada were pretty full of rust, I'm lucky with my find!
@noobasdfjkl

Steering wheel chatter is probably caused by worn tie rods, steering shaft coupler, or the steering u-joint. Any one of these three are likely causing your issue.

Love the content tho, and I just ran into the thing about A-trac + Diff Lock - why the hell did they just omit the button? Dirty bastards.

Snapped CV axles 3 times, inner + outter tie rods 2 times, on my 4th front wheel bearing due to water crossings, throwout bearing squeak on manual transmission, gas tank straps, rear e locker malfunction (bad limit switch) + everything you stated. 2007, 288000km, no engine problems, oil changes every 10000km with the cheapest offbrand synthetic oil lol

@stokedtour 3 года назад
I hope it is! When you do check it out, take off the crush bumper completely and drive around the street to see if the noise is still there. That's how I figured out it was the bumper. The funny thing is that nothing feels loose when you first inspect it. I think I remember reading on FJC forums saying that they fixed it by adding a few shims or washers in between.

As a 50 year mechanic I would wager it's simply a universal joint! Sometimes they can be hard to diagnose if you can't easily get to them to apply torque left, and right to see "slack/movement" there should be none!

My control arm ball joints are making a lot of noise after getting a 3in lift about 2 years ago. Should also look into that CV issue but didnt notice any leaks.
@stokedtour
@stokedtour 3 года назад
I had a ball joint squeak for the longest time after the lift, and to try fix the squeak, i replaced my UCAs, cleaned and greased my sway bushings, and greased and cleaned my LCA bushings. The noise was still there. I was dumbfounded until the LCA ball joints got replaced. Noise was finally gone 🙌 Of course it took me replacing and cleaning every single suspension part before i find the source of the noise LOL

My rear skid plate came off after 11 years. The front end came off first and was hanging and grinding against the drive shaft making a terrible nose. Despite buying the dealer weather proof package the plate became rusted and the bolts could no longer hold it up. The dealership said it's ok to drive without it so I didn't replace it.
