Not fully confident about this guide! But let me know what you think. More on the slide stuff coming soon. **I'd say the main point of this video (and what your goals as a rider should be), is getting comfortable in the slide positions, and getting comfortable carving in them.

I think the lack of confidence shows how much care and thought you put into these videos. This is SUPER helpful! So few people manage to break things down into manageable goals and progression. I just came back from a session on foot braking - will leave a comment on that vid.

I have a slight mental block for toe side because I had a scary highside once some time ago. Fortunately the weather was cooler then so I was very well padded up and didn’t get injured. A glove even flew off that time, no idea how. But yeah that’s the next thing I’ll be working on, now that I’ve finally made it down a 1 km hill using only heel side slides.

@downhill254skate 3 года назад
Sounds gnarly man. Good to hear you've been able to make it down hills with heelsides alone. For toeside stuff, as long as you got your weight in the right spots, you don't need to worry about highsiding ... also, I think highsiding is less likely on lower angle trucks (?) might be worth messing around with 43* plates :)

For folks who want tips on mobility, I suggest checking out GMB Fitness (a youtube channel). Great tips generally, and some specific to lower body (ankle/hip/squats, etc). The teacher, Ryan, lives in Japan and has a background in Jap martial arts and BJJ. Although he's a westerner, his tips seem to help westerners reach mobility comparable to asians (genetics n squat toilets = stronger+flexible knee/ankles).

I really appreciate your mention of hip mobility, as that is what prevented me from doing quality hillside slides for well over a year. I was able to overcome the issue by doing the exact body weight squat you recommended.

Thank you for these videos! I'm trying to get comfortable alternating hand dragging (e.g. 9:59), but I'm finding it difficult to manage my foot positions such that I can comfortably turn both directions. Once my speed is up, I'm pretty committed to my foot positions, but I sometimes find myself with very little authority in one direction or the other. Do you have any tips for this specific case? Thanks again!
@downhill254skate
@downhill254skate 2 года назад
You don't feel comfortable shfiting your feet at slightly higher speeds? This is gonna require just a bunch of practice. Also don't be afriad to take some tme setting up, before doing the hand drag carve. Taking your time is allowed
@colindupee
@colindupee 2 года назад
@@downhill254skate I found a position for my back foot that allowed me to comfortably hand drag on either side. It allowed me to feel secure on a much scarier hill... but I think it's a dead end. When I was attempting to Coleman from this position, I lost the board, and rode my back ankle to a stop on the hill. Once my high tops get here (and my scabs heal), I will try not to make that mistake again! >_< I am not able to shift my feet while I'm crouched down yet, but I will practice, or I will only descend into a crouch once my feet are where I'm going to need them.

I don't know how to foot brake but I do front side speed checks on my tugboat. I don't have the balls to do long slides though.
@seniorgranpolladeenergia2145
Hey i dont know if you'll see this but I have problems with my flexibility when crouched. what stretches would be useful to better my control and flexibility? i think my ankles might be whats wrong since i cant stay flat footed when reaching the floor. Thanks in advance:)

Hey man are there any wheels in particular that you recommend? Just want to be pointed in the right direction, my wheels are Road Rider 72mm, 78a and after a while of use me and my mate crashed in each other at a high speed (we are fine) and i noticed a bit of the front wheel actually came off. Any wheels I should consider buying?

Go fo the 72mm Krimes wheel. Or Supreme Hawgs. But if your road riders still roll, then all good tbh

is it normal that it feels weird having the knee of your back foot leg going in front of your front foot leg knee or is it way more comfortable as soon as I ride at actual speeds - haven't properly tried heelside out because of that problem, toeside seems to come kind of natural to me. (goofy, experienced snowboarder trying to get into longboarding without getting heavily injoured)
@spacekadebt1641
@spacekadebt1641 3 года назад
As a regular footed guy with limited experience, I find that it is most comfortable to put my back knee almost touching my inside front ankle while in a toeslide. If I'm going faster i may flare out the back knee a touch to the outside. I've yet to master heelsides, and have only gotten up to maybe 35 mph in a toeside. So take this with a grain of salt. In the end, it's all what's comfortable to your body. Muscle pain is okay. Joint pain is usually never a good sign. If you feel a pain in your kneecaps, above or below them, you may want to make adjustments to your position. We are all built slightly different. I've seen some guys flare out the back knee to the side in a slide. (And they seem to do it better and faster than I can) Hope this helps some.

@Jon Doe I've never heard of that back truck lock out thing to prevent wobbles. Sounds interesting. I'll take your word for it. The idea of little to no mobility for maneuvering at 30+ sounds terrifying to me. Lol Happy trails, John. Send the next one dh for me!
@spacekadebt1641
@spacekadebt1641 3 года назад
@Jon Doe Thanks for the gems, John! I do have some harder duro bushings. Think I'll give it a shot. I recently moved to Colorado Springs from Texas and quite frankly, I'm kinda unsure of how to progress. I'd kick myself if I never took the chance to get better and enjoy this awesome opportunity to bomb new hills. Good stuff, man.
@spacekadebt1641
@spacekadebt1641 3 года назад
@Jon Doe and yeah there's a few tiny hills, 50 mph hills in Austin, Texas. But I was mostly a garage skating kinda guy. Lol You can hit 30 plus in a parking garage.
@downhill254skate
@downhill254skate 3 года назад
yes it's normal that it feels weird. It's not a must for your back knee to go like that btw. But yeah just practice, it will feel more natural and normal over time

Thats wild that you are more comfortable with toeside slides than you are heelsides. Im not gonna lie. I get going faster than 45 mph and i get terrified take a left turn ...btw im goofy footed. Iv had a few incidents where my footing was off and I didnt realize it and went to toeside slide or carve and iv gone highside and flew several feet and landed on my back. Plus i have way less control during my slide if its a toeside. If im doing a heelside slide iv got way more control on how long i slide, where I go in my slide, everything. My re-grip is safer feeling and if I do fall i dont go flying and land on my back or my side....i just fall backwards on my ass and burn whatever I have in my back pockets and usually rip the ass out of my shorts ....lol. Iv destroyed several phones , wallets.....u name it. Iv probably burned it or destroyed it from heel side slides ....lmao. Any tips on why I sometimes come out of a toeside slide if im going under 30 mph in switch. I cant ride good in switch and I have a problem with toesides leaving me riding switch when I re-grip. Any tips
@downhill254skate
@downhill254skate 2 года назад
You gotta practice more hands down toeside stuff. I swear, just carving and feeling it out at low speeds can help you get dialed. But yeah I feel you, seems you've gone worn through a lot of stuff. RIP all those shorts haha
