In this week’s video, we cover: The First 24 Hours with your Puppy
The first 24 hours with your puppy can be daunting. In fact, the first month with your puppy may feel like a roller coaster ride that makes you question whether getting a puppy was the right thing to do in the first place.
This is a common feeling. It is very normal amidst the chaos of toilet training, trying to develop a relationship and bond (while getting bitten and chewed on), and the sleep deprivation, to think: Will this ever get better?
Was I wrong to get a puppy? Will my puppy cry every single night?
Is a great night’s sleep never going to happen again?
Will my puppy ever stop toileting in the house?
It does get better! In fact, there are some things you can do in the first 24 hours with your puppy to set both you and your puppy up for success. Within today’s video, we dive into some tested and approved strategies that have worked for our puppy clients. Less stress and more fun will enhance the relationship with you and your puppy.

The youngest pup I've gotten was 6 months old and I can say I did most of these things instinctively (including "hurry up" - that was critical because I lived in the city on the 5th floor)! I can't say enough about vigilance and relationship banking. I didn't do ditch the bowl until dog number 4 who was an older rescue. I just knew he wanted to be busy and was uninterested in toys, chews, etc., and so I created games. Absolute dogs, a pandemic discovery for me, has been a fabulous way to have a clear framework for what I am doing with my new pup who is extremely prey driven. Thank you , thank you!

Such sensible advice - and I can tell you from my own experience, it absolutely works. Teaching your pup calmness is indeed so powerful and makes such a difference not only to their life but to yours too. Also remember to allow your pup to have enough rest... they should sleep 18-20 hours a day. Once we did this (along with the appropriate games) the mad zoomies stopped. Follow AbsoluteDogs and you can't really go wrong!

Like the one about only allowing dogs on the furniture when invited. Which game works for that please?

Hey Jane, are you still struggling with your dog wanting to be on the furniture? We love Boundary Games! By growing our dog's value in their bed/boundary we are actively showing them, that is the place to be! No punishment for the unwanted necessary. With investment into the boundary, we create this magnet effect! Here's a super video on Boundaries ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FMMEHdnqjnI.html and a free download on how you can grow it! game.absolute-dogs.com/boundary-games-ebook

We have just got a 6 month old Romanian rescue who is very nervous. Would the no bowl technique work or is it better to let her gain our trust a bit first? I wanted to put her food down for 5 mins then remove if she didn't eat it but she's not eating much at all so I leave it but she has got into the habit of eating it at night time! Any suggestions greatly appreciated :)

Hey S G! How are you and your Romanian rescue coming along? We love Ditching the Bowl for a great number of reasons! It doesn't always need to be from our hand or in training games, it can also be through a scatter feed in the garden, a snuffle mat, a stuffed kong, or other food puzzle/dispenser. We love doing it through training games as it grows the relationship through fun interactive experiences. Do you have any suggestions on how to ditch the bowl when feeding raw?
@Astrid66us
@Astrid66us 3 года назад
Protect your carpet or flooring with a towel or blanket and handfeed. Just like with feeding any food from your hand wash your hands afterwards. Or use raw food in different form, freeze dried, frozen bits, dehydrated or air dried.

Hey Ms Eggy, Great question! We love the squeeze tubes for raw feed from A-OK9 a-ok9.com/collections/accessories/products/wet-food-squeezer-2-pack?variant=41239815553223 We also have tons of ideas for raw in this free eBook absolutedog.s3.amazonaws.com/ebooks/eBook-DitchTheBowlRAW_08.pdf

How long do you ditch the bowl for? When do you start to phase this out?
@carodeutsch2024

You never phase it out. It is a life style instead of a training method 😉

Hey Becki! Great question! We love Ditching the Bowl for life! There is so much opportunity through using our dog's food to reward great choices they volunteer, through actively growing their behavior through training games, or growing Calmness with enrichment activities. Check out our Ditch the Bowl resource here for some great ideas! game.absolute-dogs.com/mc-ditch-the-bowl

My question is that won't they always expect a treat for anything they do? I have an older puppy. He was a pound puppy and is settling in well. So far our problems are anxiety when I go out to mow. Should I crate him? He jumped up on them love seat (which is a no no) and ate some of the mini blinds. I didn't punish him just made a note that him being in the house with my 90 year old mom that doesn't interact with him like me isn't smart. Lol He also pulls when walking so my neighbor loaned a me a prong collar. It works well but I'd rather teach him to control himself. I'm anticipating learning much from your videos.

I have three dogs, and two of them steal food from the others. I'm not sure what to do about that

We love "gated communities". When our dog's dont quite have the skills yet to disengage from others/items, we love taking some of the repsonsibility back on ourselves. This means setting them up for success, through using management practices like crates, gates, beds, pens, and putting them on lead. The appropriate management strategy will depend on your household and the individual dog😊

@@absoluteDogsofficial thank you. I actually started doing that to two of my dogs. Our little one is too fearful, but the other two don't mind
