In this week’s video, we cover: Top Tips for A Stress-Free Walk Without Lead Pulling
This is a multi-part series! This is Part 1!
When your dog pulls on lead, chases critters, sniffs anything and everything, it can be frustrating. One of the larger questions we can get asked with this very common struggle is: How do I even get started?
We are covering some top tips on how to STOP bad behaviour on your walks with some easy, implementable strategies that will help you and your dog achieve less stressful walks.
Before you even start your walk, what do you want your walk to look like?
Some top tips include more coaching on:
• Starting as you mean to go on
• Avoiding nagging your dog!
• Equipping yourself and your dog appropriately for their level of training
• What kind of energy should you have on your walk?
• What should you be aware of when you are on your walk?
• How do you respond to sudden changes in the environment?
• Reinforcement strategies aren’t always the same for every dog!
• Train the dog in front of you!
• What does your dog love? Make your walk bespoke to you and your dog.
• Deciding the purpose of your walk before you even start.
Training starts with looking at the dog in front of you and we explore this in today’s video. It’s all going to make sense once you dive in. Look out for Part 2 where we dive into off lead freedom!

I'd be great to see videos with a dog that is pulling and is excited and isn't interested in loose lead walking or you and then see how you approach that. Helpful tips but these dogs are very well behaved!

A big part of this training is training concepts ahead of time: they do plenty of games-based training ahead of time, adding distracting environments a little at a time. To be successful, don’t put a pulling dog in an exciting environment at first. They often talk about ditching the walk because the more an excitable dog practices pulling, the more stress it adds to the relationship, and the longer it takes to learn the right way. If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer and mentor!

My partner and I both sound this video super reassuring. Thank you! We’re struggling a bit with a very pully puppy and it does lead to stressful walks. As well as bringing the energy down and having the right tools, any tips on how to discourage eating things off the floor in those moments too?

Have something to distract them, perhaps some of their kibble or a toy 👍

I find it interesting that you think they "graduate" to collar. I find collars are a pain because the clip slides down to the bottom and lead gets tangled in legs! Harness is much more straightforward!

I have a 16 week old cattle dog pup, when we walk he is always sniffing the ground, he isn't being with me in that time what can I do to change this.

I honestly like the idea of there's a game for that and I was looking on your website before and from there found the RU-vid channel but I haven't seen one game or tips that would help me or my dogs. Can you tell me some games on your RU-vid channel that may convince me to buy any of your stuff? Me and my rescues are working on lots of things: reactivity, leash walking, living together and with my first dog I do some obedience and diabetes alert training (just for you to know what might be interesting to me).

Check out the sexier than a squirrel challenge- it’s only £27 and that’ll give you a good idea of how they train. They relaunched it on Monday so there’s also a 30 minute live a day where you can ask questions

Also: how many games have you tried playing in a home environment repeatedly with no pressure? This training style needs to build foundation before getting real-life results.

I'd love it if you could show you starting out a dog new to the leash, or naughty when on leash and what to do. I need help! I do walk in a neighborhood with loose dogs, dogs in fences, squirrels, etc and I walk with another person and his dog so if I keep kibble in my pocket she will drive me crazy. We also walk about 4 times a day as well. I may have to just tell him I can't do this anymore until I get Cooper under control. (I kept my daughter's dog that did very well on leash, so the neighbor is used to us walking)

I agree: walking that frequently without having a foundation may be hurting the learning curve. AD often talks about ditching the walk to practice proper walking manners, and then slowly adding distraction and choices.
