Good comprehensive list. I have encountered many of the problems you describe. My greatest annoyances seem to be cab drivers everywhere and a variety AirBnB problems. I appreciate your comments on using local expat groups on Facebook. I have avoided any form of social media because of privacy concerns but the benefit of good local information may force me to at least get an anonymous FB account, if that is even possible anymore.

Excellent advice as usual amigos. As ronin traveler says, i almost always book a central hotel with nearby or in house restaurant and bar for 2 to 3 days, that way i know the taxi or uber will find it easily and i'll have a beer and a meal after a hard day of travel.

Hi dan and Qiang...great video as usual! One thing I think you sould mention is what is required when leaving a country. When I flew back to Brazil last summer the clerk at American Airlines did not know the regulations for getting back into Brazil. He kept insisting that I had to have a 72 hour PCR result when it clearly stated *in the fine print* that all I needed was my medical permission to travel (I had already had and recoverd from covid)... My point is that it is important to have your ducks in a row regarding departing as well as arriving. k

The clarity on numbers being conveyed is critical, and not just for prices. When I was in Coron (P.I), I wanted to go see the big CORON sign on a hill overlooking the city/harbor. I was told (verbally) that there were 70 steps, which was important, because it was 90F + that day. And, of course, there's actually a lot of difference between 70 and 700, which I learned, somewhat painfully.... but the view was great, and worth every step.....

I owned a taxi co for over 20 years always take a picture of the taxi before you get in! With the number showing clearly this will help if you dropped something. Keep your Google photos on auto upload and it will be there If something happens. Not wishing anything bad to happen to anyone. Dan great entertaining video!

Dan while I agree one can learn much from an expat page I have found there also is a "know it all" peanut gallery. What do I mean? Well while the majority are helpful, welcoming and encouraging there is often one or two negative people who speak dispairingly about for example- visas or they'll critzise a new comer for asking a question that was answered multiple times. So we need to our own research and know the source. I rarely talk about my visa on a couple of Bali fb pages because I see the "stay home, wait till covids past in 2022" Or, "Dont you know that no new visas are being given now" When I know that many are legally getting approved. Otherwise you are correct. Much can be learned from those fb pages. (Oh and I agree that this can often be avoided by using the search area on that site)

Your videos are always packed with good information. Being older than most trees and some rocks, the amount of paperwork, documents and requirements to move between countries these days is beyond me. 3 years ago my girlfriend and I went to Sri Lanka to get out of the high pollution season in north Thailand. That was the first time I applied for a visa in advance and booked rooms in advance after traveling since 1973. FYI in the U.S. you will want to rotate your credit cards, as some banks will automatically close a card due to lack of activity.

To avoid being scammed, I have learned to sometimes be more low key or not too friendly. Unfortunately, If you are overly friendly, it could lead people to think you are an easy target if they are looking to take advantage of you.

Funny thing about even listening to expats there. I was in Bacolod. Philippines and a guy said if I was there more than 30 days I'd be thrown in jail. Maybe fined for accidentally staying over but dought being put in jail.

The Philippines will just fine you when you leave. You would not go to jail for overstaying your visa in the Philippines.

So much useful information! One challenge re your 'just in time' accommodation strategy could be that all of the good places could be booked, depending on the time of year. It might be tough to get a block booking for an entire month as the place could already be booked, if even for only one or two random periods. Other than going there in the off season or 'shoulder' periods, curious re your thoughts here.

Hey GK Schick, thanks for the great (insightful) question. You are a natural-born adventurer. That is what I was thinking too when we first went from booking one month in advance to our just-in-time strategy. But so far so good. The worst result we have had is paying a few extra days over budget. But on the whole, it has saved us money. Why you are wondering? You already guessed it. We rarely go anywhere in high season. We go just before or in the offseason depending on weather and how expensive the place is in shoulder season. So everything is rarely all booked up. We just prefer not to be in places in high seasons so that means there is always a vacancy or two. Thanks for commenting. RU-vid shows our videos to more people when they get more comments. after playing tennis for a living and also livin in centrl america and doin many chicken bus visa runs ive learned all of your tips and then some.Thats the good news the bad news is im now looking for permanenat home and at the age of 59 i dont have the energy to go thu all of these things anymore.its a catch 2, I need to travel to find my permant home but dont wanna do it the hard way.I mostly been livin out of a suitcase for 40 years.Now wherever im at i wanna stay and pitch a tent

Hey Dan, have you ever thought about offering tour packages for rich travelers? You already have the resources (eBooks and travel videos) and the credentials/credibility to show people. You’ve been traveling and reporting on world-wide locations for years. You could really offer a valuable service ongoing and make an excellent additional income. You already know the hotels to stay, things to see and do, and restaurants that are good. The two of you together would be an ideal team! Just food for thought.

@@VagabondAwake Great tips especially use credit cards not debit cards linked to personal account. I was defrauded with $53000.00 worth of bogus charges in Costa Rica on my Chase Credit Card the bank had to eat it. I was not personally liable. Not so with debit cards.

Important for travelers go to your bank to activate your bankcard so that you can use it anywhere in the world, in Europe your bankcard does not work outside Europe you need to activate it in your home country Dont forget that , verry important

Right...you mentioned legality and local connections for VISA. I looked at the SRRV Classic for Philippines... 10,000 in a bank (hopefully with interest) with around 2K plus per month income. This is while everybody else isn't allowed? 🤔. I've been travelling for 12 years now. Looking for long term lately. I tell them "Better deal on the best place, the longer I stay". Always works out nicely for everyone involved quickly...or I walk. The prices in front of the eyes or I'm gone, as you said, in words. Sometimes the gouge is the there, two menus, but if I'm hungry ...sign me up for some chow. That's how I quit vegan. Hunger and games. Catch a cab like a thief in the night from >departures gate< after someone is getting out at taxi drop offs. Have that "we're waiting for someone" look...then like the cheetah at the antelope..."start the box (meter) and I'll get in" Tell them where you're going and which route to take. Correct pronunciation and "poof" 20 % the price of the arrivals gate. 😄

Next time when you book a BnB, make sure to ask more information about the environment. Are there a ot of dogs, cats and birds? Cats meow a lot in the middle of the night as they would call out for hours for inviting a mate.

The way I am reading it each 30 day extension costs about 65 USD? So if one wants to stay a year in the Philippines it would cost 780 USD in visa fees? That's a bit crazy.

It is 20 USD per month per person (normal instead of express), plus a tourist card is like $50 USD which you buy once. 20 326 months times 20 USD plus $50. These are just rough numbers per person.

one thing that I haven't heard you cover is what essentials to bring, I have found that the lighter you travel the better. No sense in bringing more than you really need. Like you, I am vegan, (sometimes hard to find) so I like to cook. Do you actually haul around pots and pans with you. And like you, I will make something easy such as oat meal. So, how much luggage do you haul around?

I took a cab in Bogota. I thought the driver said 4000, but he was actually saying 400. I tried to give him the 4000 but he insisted on giving me my 3600 change! On the other hand, I know local Colombians who won't pick a cab up on the street for fear of kidnapping. A truly extreme place.

Voluntary food restrictions make traveling quite challenging. I've traveled with a vegan, which was a burden for me and restaurant staff. I've also traveled with someone with life threatening allergies, which I am glad to accomodate...it's a disability, not just a preference.

I see. The reason I like prefer having 2 different ATM cards from two different banks, is to avoid the situation where 1 ATM card goes missing and I have no remaining ATM cards. Which happened to me before. So I had to wait for my single bank to express mail another ATM card to me in a foreign country. Dealing with Immigration becomes tiresome. Fast travel, changing countries ever few weeks, or days, is hard work. Finding affordable, good accommodation can be a challenge. Now I prefer slow travel😎

I don’t feel safe to use ATM outside a bank. When I need to change the dollars to foreign currency, I rather pay more to get the foreign currency exchange inside a bank. I did that when I was in Sydney. At an ATM, a criminal might notice you walking out of ATM and follow you.

Yes, I prefer using banks and ATMs inside malls and inside bank entry ways. The once out in public get hacked more easily too.
