In episode 395 of Things We Said Today, Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren Devivo choose their favorite and least favorite tracks from each of the Beatles British albums. It was harder than we expected, particularly selecting “least favorite” tracks, since let’s face it, the Beatles were the zenith of Western Civ and there are no actual bad tracks. (Hey…I heard that. No. There aren’t.)

Lads, Mark Lewisohn said about "Beatles For Sale," that for many years of the Beatles early L.P.'s it was the one he played the least. But then he rediscovered it and now he likes and play's it just as much as the other 3 early Beatles releases. And I have to agree with him. Cheers, Chris Perry.

While I disagree with Allan Kozzin's opinion that Spector's mix of Across the Universe sounds like a pig's dinner, I do love the phrase, It was a very funny way to say "uh, Spector ruined it". That version was the very first one I heard (I was 7), and that and Long and Winding Road moved me to tears. Very beautiful, both. I also enjoy the unadorned versions of both songs. They're just very strong songs, within strings and choirs or without them.

Loved the conversation. It was hard to press pause at my bedtime and stayed up later than I wanted. A lot of your picks were worth quibbling with, but the one that surprised me most was that nobody picked Why Don't We Do It In The Road for least favorite from the White Album. If Wild Honey Pie "goes nowhere," doesn't "Road" go nowhere by a less interesting route? I love those bendy-sounding guitars and the dopey drum riff. To me, it's just a fun half minute of madness that helps set the tone for a diverse album. But for no one to pick "Road," or to place it above Cry Baby Cry, really beggars belief. The only other strong feeling I had was about Maxwell, which I'm glad Ken picked, but I've never understood its likeability. Even as a child, I knew something was off about that song. It's the only Beatles track that has no joy --- a jaunty track about a guy who smashes people's skulls with a hammer? I agree with Ian McDonald when he called it a "ghastly miscalculation" and a "lapse of taste."

Thanks guys. interesting show- and some very interesting stuff came up. The one comment I just thought I would add is far from important but just a bit of support for Allan when he made a comment about how he never liked the sound of the electric piano. That makes two of us in the world.

Interesting observation on the "Cold Intro" songs that the Ken made at the beginning of the videocast. I counted 31 songs from the 12 UK studio albums that had the vocal first in the intro in the song. This is of course not county 45 singles not on albums. Good listen!

The story I heard about "Love You To" was that it was originally called "Love To You", which makes a lot of sense, since it is in the lyrics. How the last two words became inverted wasn't part of the story, but it could have been a publishing error or it might have been a deliberate tweak by the band.

I really like "Love Me Do". I lived in that time, and there is something about the spaces in between the words sung, the music, and the stops in the song that leaves a glimpse of the period, what was happening musically and otherwise in the world, and sort of an announcement of what is about to happen. The song juxtaposed against the old world it is replacing. "Pay attention, everyone. Something's about to happen". That sort of thing. It's just a feeling of "hush" that was in the air when the storm was coming. I mean, for Americans no one knew what they were about to see on Ed Sullivan that fateful night. Most of us, anyway.

My theory about the title Love You To is that it’s a reference to The Beatles talking with Murray The K at The Plaza Hotel (as documented in the Maysles Brothers film), where Murray refers to the song Love Me Do as Love You Do, and John snickers at him.

I have noted several instances that I can’t think of right now, but there are also broader cultural references. To us, “it’s time for tea and meet the wife” works okay on it’s plain meaning, and a lot of us don’t know that for Lennon, and Brits generally, it was a reference to a TV show. There’s something like it (but a radio show, Sound of Five) in Another Day. “If it’s not too dear.” It’s not like we don’t know what it means, and I think it was used here three or four generations ago, but it’s not common parlance now, so it sounds a little quaint. I love keeping track of those cultural-social things. There are similar things that clarify what Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky, etc. we’re up to in works that are accessible enough on the surface, but more interesting if you know what their references are - folk things, particular dance forms etc. But I digress…. I often compare Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite to Corporal Clegg on Pink Floyd's Saucerful of Secets. They're both slam-dunk closers of the first sides of their respective albums. You didn't expect the side to close out in such an in-your-face way.

No one who calls himself a Beatles fan could possibly say that Yesterday was a boring song. May as well apply that label to all of their other acoustic classics ( Julia, I Will, Mother Nature's Son, You've Got to Hide You're Love Away, Blackbird, etc.)

Nice conversation there - as usual. But as for “Mr Moonlight” - I have never understood the dislike this track attracts. The great vocal is the cherry on top but it is obvious the boys are having fun and are fully aware of the song’s corniness. Which is where the organ break comes in: it is a clever and comic bit of throw back to all those songs where the organ turned them into a roller rink soundtrack. So - for me - a corny sendup with a great vocal and a lot of sheer fun.
@fastcakes
@fastcakes Год назад
I agree, to me it is a exclusively English reference - the cheesy organ brings to mind Northern Working Men's Clubs, and music hall - the former is solely an English cultural phenomenon with which the Beatles will have been familiar with.

The UK albums is the official Beatles albums. The American albums was something Capitol records put together with no input from the Beatles. The only time it really worked was with "Magical mystery tour" "Meet the Beatles" was a good idea as well. But other than that i`m not a big fan of the American Beatles records. I love the fact that Paul is still touring. His Glastonbury gig of last year was simply fantastic.

@@allankozinn192 For someone who grew up in the 1990`s it was weird to learn that they released different versions of the albums, and that some of the original albums were not even released in the U.S. at all in the 1960s . The first version i had of "Revolver" was the U.S. version. It was much cooler to get the real UK version with more songs later. The fact that they held back songs like "Drive my car" and "Nowhere man" from the American version of "Rubber soul" was sad. "Magical mystery tour" was the only time Capitol records got it really right.

With you 100% on the first 7 albums, and with Abbey Road and the "Prudence" pick, though for me, Revolution 9 is the centerpiece of the White Album, even if not the best track --- it was a landmark for the Beatles to tackle "musique concrete," I'm glad they did it, and did it well.

re: "I Saw Her Standing There" bass playing - I think Paul nicked that nimble bass part from Arthur Alexander's "A Shot Of Rhythm. & Blues" which came out in 1962, and the Beatles themselves played on BBC radio.

No, it's Chuck Berry's "I'm Talking About You," which the Beatles also played on the BBC. I believe Paul has admitted this.

Great video guys!! I’m glad Darren said it but his “Let it Be” chose for most favorite was a bit of a head scratcher considering how that song is one of the most overplayed song from them. Yes, it’s a great song but it suffers serious fatigue factor for me I will say that as it relates to “Dig a Pony”, the lyrics are weird while still containing a cool factor. Lennon had a knack for making his gobbledygook lyrics maintain coolness. Sometimes with Paul, his weird/gobbledygook lyrics come off as a little lame in comparison

Everyone, not just you lads, seems to have a problem with Run For Your Life but not Maxwell and his silver hammer? This seems not logical. One song threatens, the other actually kills.
@kenmichaelsradio748
@kenmichaelsradio748 Год назад
I don't have a problem with either one.
@thingswesaidtoday-abeatles9321
It is logical really. In Run for Your Life, John is singing (again, in a line lifted complete from Elvis's Baby Let's Play House) "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man." It rings a lot of bells for people who find it objectionable, particularly a guy threatening violence against a woman, and the context is the presumption that it's describing what's supposed to be a real relationship, even if it's fictional -- the song treats the relationship as real, not fanciful. Maxwell's Silver Hammer, while the imagery is violent - and, one could argue, more specifically violent (we know the weapon, the attack is described), the song is clearly a fictional, fanciful and even silly tale of a guy who is painted as clearly a bit off. Rather than being a first-person jealousy song with an implied threat (implied because he doesn't say he'll kill her, just that he'd rather see her dead), it's a third-person fantasy about someone who's clearly a sociopath (if not a psychopath). It's the difference between saying "I, personally, would rather see you dead" and "That guy over there killed someone." Does that help? -- Allan
@michaelriches9982
@michaelriches9982 Год назад
Your reply, Allan, makes perfect sense. The broader question, I suppose, is how did a song about a guy smashing people's heads with a hammer not become everyone's least favorite from the album? Is the hammer's fancy color the mitigating factor? Would "Maxwell's Murderous Mercedes" about a guy running over people at crosswalks be just as fun to listen to? Don't mean to focus on this point too much --- this was one of your best videos. I just have a visceral hatred of this song, mostly because everything else the band did, including whatever might be the next-worst song to this, has at least some element of genius and joy within it.
@FoxoChaca
@FoxoChaca Год назад
Thanks for thoughtful reply, Alan. You make a good case, I can't disagree. And I agree also with Michael's statement. Maxwell is my least favorite Beatles tune. Beautiful, ugly and unsettling all at the same time. Do love Mal's anvil, though.)

Abbey Road has a handful of tracks that could be the best or favorite for anybody. That said, they're all valid choices. I would love to hear Allan try to convince the world of Revolution 9's brilliance, maybe in light of some White Album-themed show.
