Episode 404 is our last Things We Said Today for 2023, and it’s a long one - and something different. Catching up with the news of the last few weeks, Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren Devivo pay tribute to the late Denny Laine [04:00-33:00], followed by plenty more news [33:00-50:00], But for the main part of the show [at 50:00] we welcome the faculty of the RPM School - Walter Everett, author of the extraordinary “The Beatles As Musicians” two-volume set, Jack Petruzzelli, the multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter who many listeners will know as a member of the Fab Faux, and Cameron Greider, also a multi-instrumentalist and producer, who has worked with Sean Lennon and many others - who will give us a preview of their online course on the “White Album,” which starts on January 8.
Information about the RPM School can be found at www.rpm-school.... More information about the White Album course is here: www.rpm-school....
Also check out our previous conversation with Walter Everett on show 264: • Things We Said Today #... . And in one of the news items, Ken mentioned Gary Burr, who we spoke with on Episode 383: • Things We Said Today #...

Wow, that was a great listening experience. About Paul, I agree with Jack, but I was thinking Mozart, but I’ll have Bach. Enjoyable, thank you.

In 2013 I had the opportunity to have a chat with Tom Doyle at the launch of his Man On The Run book in London and Denny wasn't very co-operative with him either, Alan! Maybe Denny was burned by the Geoffrey Guilliano experience and his trashy Blackbird book, plus the UK Sun newspaper articles that had him complaining about his time with Wings and supposedly taken out of context. On a more postive note Wings wouldn't have been the same without him and his contributions, expecially the vocal harmonies that gave Wings their sound.

I'm enjoying this, but am speechless ( which is why I'm typing ) at Walter Everett's assertion that George Harrison was "denied a microphone" in their stage act by Lennon and McCartney. Is there any evidence of this? It was apparent to my 11 year old self in 1964 that Harrison's coming in to sing with McCartney or Lennon was pure stagecraft, nothing else, and great stagecraft, at that. It was particularly thrilling to all of the girls when that would happen. It was immediately obvious to fans as it had been to George Martin that George Harrison was not lead singer material, but his coming forward to harmonize with Lennon or McCartney was always, as I said, a rather electrifying thing: just listen to the girls' reactions. It was also a subtly unpretentious thing that Harrison didn't have his own microphone. Yet, when Harrison had his lead role, whether in Roll Over, Beethoven or Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby, the other two had no reluctance in letting him have "his own microphone." Showmanship. Just like the low, perfectly timed bows at the end of their shows.

George Harrison sang some of his and cover songs very good, his very good early 1965 song I Need You was very good and his voice sounded very good too etc.

It's called professionalism in the early-mid 1960's for rock n roll bands to get very good professional jobs, they had to wear matching suits, ties and similar hair styles too such as the early Rolling Stones,Eric Burdon and The Animals, even The Moody Blues until 1967 a year after The Beatles stopped, by the late 1960's no rock bands had to do this anymore to get very good professional jobs because everybody were hippies now. and in a January 1964 black and white video of The Beach Boys playing live wearing shirts with big matching stripes with teen girls screaming through most of the concert,as they did with the early Rolling Stones and even the early Who.

"Denied a microphone" is a strange observation. Three microphones on stands on a stage would have created unnecessary cluttering. He was the lead guitarist, and that was his main responsibility. Joining Paul on his mic on harmonies and backing vocals, plus accessing a microphone when singing one or two lead vocals, was enough. All four Beatles had access to and used microphones when playing live. It seems like a suggestion that George was "denied a voice", which clearly wasn't the case, but became one of George's many sources of discontent over the years, even when his perceptions were clearly in defiance of fact. Until the latter years of the '60s, George simply didn't have enough good songs. It ought not to be forgotten that George all but gave up the guitar for two years in favour of the sitar, hence Paul having to provide lead guitar on many Beatles recordings from 1965 onwards. The trope of "Poor, underappreciated George" is a tiresome one, generally put forward by George himself and George's devotees. In the 1970s, it shouldn't be forgotten that George's distinctive slide guitar style, while excellent and melodic, became extremely overused. Slide playing is a nice skill to draw upon, but not to the exclusion of everything else in a guitarist's repertoire.

I always thought that Wingspan was a lesser project for leaving Denny out. He'd have had a lot to contribute to that documentary, which ended up being a Paul and Linda story type thing instead of a proper Wings doc.

There's the possibility that Denny declined to be interviewed and thus made it difficult to be represented more in the film. Also, it was in 1983, I believe, that Denny went to Britain's most reviled tabloid, The Sun, and trashed Paul for financial gain. Fortunately, it appears that the rift was healed several years before Denny died, but I doubt most people would be very forgiving of a friend who publicly criticised them. Paul had already had John Lennon taking pot-shots at him in the media from 1970 onwards, so I doubt he would have looked favourably on another friend and collaborator doing much the same thing.

Interesting breakdown of the songs though I still don’t think Piggies was about John and Paul but who knows. I’ve never heard George talk about it and I don’t think he alludes to that in the I Me Mine book. And one thing we know about George is he wasn’t shy, especially post breakup, about voicing his criticisms about the band and his position in it when he wanted to. I don’t think he would have had any qualms about saying yeah Piggies was about John and Paul. One question, and maybe I missed it, but have you done an episode on the new red and blue mixes? I would like to hear you guys talk about it. Especially after Allan’s I Am The Walrus comment at the end. 🙂

Disbanding Wings was, unfortunately, a big mistake of Paul's. With the Back to the Egg line up, Wings could have developed and changed in the 1980s much as other '70s acts did. Wings, of course, never released back to back albums which sounded the same, but the musicians were in place in 1979/80 to grow and develop further. Instead, Paul sacrificed that for short-term personal success which peaked in 1982 and 1983, then petered out. With the diversity of input from a proper band, Paul could have continued to be both experimental and commercially successful.

Regarding the lyrical “analysis”of PIGGIES…I don’t think it’s directly about Lennon- McCartney! Thats really taking a leap beyond evidence in my mind. It always sounded to me like Harrisons satirical cynical view of upper middle and Upper class BRITISH society rather than about his bandmates. Not at all..i don’t agree with your self admitted speculation. As far as the harpsichord…it may have been a SUGGESTION by Chris Thomas after hearing the melody..they always wanted to expand their sonic pallette!

I agree. George wrote several songs complaining about Lennon & McCartney, but he'd never have stooped as low as to refer to them as pigs. The assertion is laughable and disingenuous. The discussion about Piggies also goes on far too long for what is an enjoyable but mostly undistinguished song in the Beatles catalogue. A musicologist's job is to dissect and explain musical techniques, not to expound whimsical theories based on vague lyrics, especially when there is absolutely no evidence George had his bandmates in mind.
