Hi Wisconsin girl here, love watching you cook etc. we have so much in common I cook the old fashion way since I am 74 years old. My hubby and I are married 54 years and always have a huge garden which our daughter loved to help me can every year. We cooked together until she went away to college. My daughter is now President of the Chamber of Commerce in a beautiful city in Minnesota and her husband is executive Chef.

I had a goat one time. One goat, a boar, normally used in Africa for meat. He was a big fellow. We bought him when he was six weeks old to be a companion to my orphaned baby walking horse. We named him Buddy. He lived with us for about two years. I wish I had the space to relate what a great companion he was and how much he added to our farm. We have many Buddy stories, but the one you brought to mind was him crossing a highway to eat my neighbors rose bushes. He absolutely loved rose bushes, so after he had eaten all of mine, he went wondering. He was huge and thought he was human. After finishing with the rose bushes he went to visit the children playing in the yard. They were terrified! He only wanted to play, but that adventure got him into trouble. Point is goats make great pets. If you ever get a chance to fall in love with one, by all means do it!

Love your channel Mrs. Lori. About 8 years ago I discovered the secret for keeping all kinds of greens and lettuces fresh for at least 1 or 2 weeks depending! Costs nothing because you have them on your counter. I take the store wrapping off... iceberg, kale, spinach, carrots or what ever it is and wrap it in some paper towels, place it in a plastic zip bag but leave it open to breathe and pop it in the fridge. I change the paper towel as it dampens. Works like a charm, and I live in humid Florida! Give this a try and let me know how it works for you please.

I've been binge-watching since i found your channel.. You are living the life that i WISH I was living.. I know exactly what you are talking about when you described your little store.. there was one just like it in my family's home town in Louisiana... it was right at the mouth of the inner "island" of the oxbow lake at home. The lake had been a loop of the adjacent Mississippi river, which had changed it's course and silted in , becoming a lake.. There is ( or was) a sunken paddle-wheel boat at one end of the lake that was discovered many years ago during a drought... The little lake store had groceries, fish tackle and bait, a lunch meat counter, and small short-order grill, cold drinks, candy and gas.. It had wide-plank wood floors that creaked when you walked..The family that owned it during my earliest memories of it, lived in the back of the store.. We used to wait for the school bus from there every morning.. It eventually sold and then, years later burned down... To me, it was what a country store SHOULD be.. the only thing it didn't carry was livestock feed and vegetable starts.. Thanks for reminding me of sweet memories!

Hi from Michigan. I watched one of your videos, and now I can't stop. Your so down to earth, and I love your southern accent. I could listen to you all day. You have some great gardening tips, and I love that you cook from scratch. Watching how you can your food is very educational, for me. My Mom, who passed away, would can food, but I never took the time, I wish I had, to learn that from her. I regret that now that she's gone. Do you know how to make cha cha ? Some call it chow chow, but my Grandmother and Mom called it cha cha. They used green tomatoes, pickling spice, sugar... not sure what else goes into it, but they would grind all of the vegetables up, cook it in a big pot and can a bunch of jars of it. We would eat it with greens and beans. I was wondering if you ever made any, and if so, do you have a video of that recipe? I've been craving it and want to make some. Thank you for taking the time, to make and share these videos. As a new subscriber haven't seen them all, but plan on watching a lot of them. 😊

I remember going to Yellville one year with my husbands parents, their other two kids and their spouses, the grandkids and a couple of aunts. We rode in 3 cars with walkie talkies to keep together. No cell phones back then. We stayed at a campground and went exploring to the place where grandpa had lived when he was 10-13 years old. It was still there and the grandsons were 10 & 13 yo and were amazed and loved it so much. They saw the waterfall behind the old house that provided water from a trough to the kitchen. They explored the cave under the waterfall that grandpa never had the nerve to go into - but the boys were going to and then backed out, also. We saw the barn that Papa had worked out of and it was the trip of a lifetime. Afterwards, my husband and I drove home separately since the family was going on to Tennessee and we had to get back to work. We did take every back road possible and at one point we drove off the pavement and over a dry creek bed. That road ended at the Strawberry River that you mentioned in this video. The road department signs had routed us over the old bridge since the new one had gotten so old they were replacing it. Honest. We stared at the old wooden bridge we were about to go over and decided to wait for a car to come and go over first before we actually rode over ourselves. It was one lane and the boards rattled as we drove over it - as fast as we dared. We could see the river below through the slats between the wood planks we were driving over. I held my breath the whole way. When we got to the other side, we stopped the car and took pictures as no one was going to believe we actually drove over that old bridge. I have never forgotten the name of that river and now I'm 73. Thanks for a beautiful but scary 40 year old memory.

I love your massage method of dressing a salad. I would think you'd waste a lot less dressing that way. Y'all sure have had a varied career over the years. It was wonderful to hear about it. I really appreciate your review of the linen bread bags. I have Tupperware bread keepers, and they do keep homemade bread fresh and soft, but they only work for regular loaves of bread. I suppose a Tupperware bowl would work on the round loaves, but I don't have any and they're so darned expensive now. What I do have is a lot of vintage high-quality Irish linen that I can't seem to stop buying at the garage sales and flea markets. Don't see why I can't cut up the ones with flaws and make bread bags. And, maybe if I make some beeswax wrappers to use instead of wax paper, it would keep the bread softer? What do you think? I have a bunch of beeswax, too. Loved the vlog!

Those linen bread bags look lovely! Although I can see how bread could dry out after a few days. Here's a thought: wrap the loaves in waxed fabric, then put in the bread bag. The waxed fabric will hold in moisture like a plastic bag, but it's washable and re-usable. "2leelou Creates" has a video about making them yourself (which means you can chose your own fabric pattern!). I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising. Next time pineapple goes on sale I'm going to can some! Thanks for your inspiring and educational videos. :)

I live in zone 6a close to St Louis. I tried winter gardening for the first time last winter. I grew broccoli, cabbage, kale, swiss chard, Asian greens, lettuce, and onions. It did great! Winter gardening is way easier than summer. I bought 12 gauge wire to build hoops over the produce. Just enough height for clearance. Agribon 30 row cover fabric. Rocks to hold the fabric down. I'd uncover the garden when it was above freezing. Cover it up when it got below freezing. And used a double layer when it got really cold. I had fresh greens and onions all winter. I easily recouped the cost of the wire and fabric that winter with my savings on the grocery budget. Anyway, you mentioned loving being able to get fresh produce out of the garden and this is super easy to do. No bugs, no weed pressure, no disease, the deer left it alone, no watering. The only work was uncovering and recovering the plants, and occasionally removing damaged leaves.

Cook from scratch what you eat. I have seven grandchildren and they can grow their food , but not a clue on how to preserve it.

Thank you so much for the kale and lettuce storing tip! I hate to waste anything. I can't see well enough to drive anymore so I like to buy produce and store it for a few days. I will try that fresh paper. I'm learning so much watching your videos. And I enjoy your stories. It's crazy hot here.

I had a moth problem several years ago. I learned that you have to find the nursery. I had to go through everything in my pantry. I finally found the nursery in a bag of flour or grits or something like that. When I threw it out, that solved my moth problem. Now I store dry goods in tightly sealed bags or containers. Also I don't think they like pasta.

Lord! I love you! SERENE! THAT is what is reflected on your lovely face, Lori! You don’t regret your life and it SHOWS! What a JOY you are! You know, you’re just 4 yrs older than my oldest daughters daughter, Holly. I’m old... 73. But thanks to the miracle of medicine I still here! 4 weeks ago they weren’t sure I would be! The good Lord just wasn’t ready for me. And I’m taking advantage of that! Got more cooking to do and more recipes to try! Lol 🌹
