Say you get around £800 pm: that is what you can pay for a single room with shared toilet and kitchen. You can go to the outskirts and pay around £ 200 less, but you better find work there, as you will fall £ 100 short if you need a monthly tube pass from area 5 to 1-2, or you can just have enough for bus but then spend all the money in rent+transport and improvise if you fancy eating every day. Of course you can be friggin rich and just dont't care, but in that case you better start thinking about doing real work as not many workin class can afford rent and I don't see shops and restaurants getting staffed (they are, but there is a shortage)..... or just go to live anywhere else in England and have rents, food costs and transportation below what you'll get in your salary so life is feasible.

Before 1961, the Metropolitan Line went as far as Aylesbury, but was only electrified up to Rickmansworth. The electric locomotive was changed to a steam one there in a few minutes. The carriages were slam door with compartments. The line from Amersham to Aylesbury is now part of the national rail network, and Chiltern Railways run trains from London Marylebone. Uniquely, these trains use Underground track and signalling from Harrow on the Hill to Amersham.

Shortest metro line in the world by number of stations? I’m guessing you don’t count the Tünel in Istanbul or the 42nd Street Shuttle in NYC. Both of those have two stations
@ajkleipass
@ajkleipass 4 года назад
I think he meant the shortest complete system. The 42nd Street shuttle is a segment of the first subway in New York City, as such it is connected to 4/5/6 lines on the Grand Central Terminal end and the 1/2/3 lines on the Times Square end. Whereas the line he was showing is totally isolated and needs to rely on a train hoist to move equipment on and off the route.

This is so cool. The Tube has a rather uncommon electrification system, fourth rail (as opposed to third rail) with 660 volts total, 440 volts on the side "third rail", 220 at NEGATIVE POLARITY in the middle "fourth rail." This was originally done to prevent stray current from causing damage, especially to the original tube tunnels. Only one company originally did this (there were several different railways), the "Yerkes Group", but they acquired most of the other tube lines, as well as what's now the District line, hence the standardized electric system. Well, the Metropolitan wanted to use overhead lines (you mentioned them), but since they shared the Circle with the District, one system had to be chosen, went to arbitration, 4-rail won. The "subsurface" lines, though, may soon have the voltage raised to 750 volts, to allow for faster speeds. Another thing that sets the London Underground apart from most "metro" systems, with the exception of some in Japan.....you have lines where "underground" and "mainline" trains share trackage! Parts of the District, Bakerloo, and Metropolitan lines. But I told you about the 4-rail? In the shared sections, the third rail has the total voltage, and the fourth rail isn't insulated like normal but bonded to the running rails, so both 3rd and 4th rail trains can use it. But there are special detectors on the Bakerloo Line just north of Queen's Park to ensure that an Overground 3rd rail train won't accidentally go into the LU platforms, OR WORSE, the tube tunnels. You mentioned a "winch" when describing the Waterloo and City line. Well, until the early 90's, there was an Armstrong lift, a special hoist for taking the cars (they use the American term for underground trains, rather than "carriage"), one at a time, between the surface and that line, but it had to be removed for the (now gone) Eurostar terminal. Hence they switched to a crane. Until 1993 the Waterloo and City line used 3rd rail, but, one full year before it stopped being owned by British Rail, they switched to the LU system of electrification, and bought the same type of train that was bought for the Central Line. But until the massive overhaul in 2006, the trains had their "Network Southeast" paintscheme, and the signals were holdouts from British Rail.

Toycat, flooded stations are very bad, especially when it's salt water. If you've not seen it, look up photos of the South Ferry subway station after Superstorm Sandy hit NYC in October 2012. The flooding from that storm is still playing havoc with Amtrak's Hudson River tunnels, and every other flooded space that hasn't been renovated yet. The saltwater, from sitting there so long, is causing structural issues to the concrete tunnel lining.

Great video. However, I would love to see a lapel mic or some other source of better audio. I thought the same thing a while back on one of the foreign country videos.

The metro system in Vancouver (Canada) is mostly above ground, and it's called the Sky Train. The oldest portion was built for the 1986 Expo, and is thus called the Expo Line. It goes from Waterfront in Vancouver out to Surrey. It used to stop at Scott Road just barely into Surrey, but when they started preparing to expand the system they brought it much further into Surrey to King George station. They added the Millennium line (guess when) when I was a teenager, and about a decade later they added a the Canada line for the 2010 Olympics, which has a section directly into Vancouver International Airport. I haven't lived there in over 7 years now, so I'm not sure which line they're working on now, but it's expanding again. I always wished they would extend it to Langley, where I grew up, so I wouldn't have to bus to a train station.

Hi, I found out the other day on the Ons website, that the UK population is die to reach 72.9 million by the late 2030s. From about 63million, at the last census. I don't think the general population have an idea what a huge change is going on. So I find infrastructure videos like this fascinating.. I don't think Imkst realise the mamooty change we're undergoing Love the vids Toycat

The specific distance between Leicester Square and Covent Garden is 0.16 miles. Only the DLR has shorter distances between stations. The furthest flung parts of the Underground is actually in Buckinghamshire, not even in Greater London. Chesham station is the furthest flung station away from London city centre
