Frederico talks watches did a great video on this topic. I was surprised how common it is for grey dealers to sell watches on consignment. I've never watched any of Anthony Farrer's video's or his socials etc but I heard he had a 'blackout' a while back. Surely that was not just a red flag but a flashing red neon light that Anthony Farrer could not be trusted.

People are buying expensive watches believing they are investments that can be cashed in anytime you need money. If you are not a high net worth individual it is best to stay away from watches you cannot afford. Better to buy gold bullion.

Grey market dealers have been around long before the watch craze of the last few years. They have always worked on the principal of a profit margin either below or above market value depending on the market condition. That is not going to change because Rolex is making more watches available. The only benefit will be to buyers being able to spend less. But dealers will still get their profit. You either buy from a grey market dealer because you cannot get a piece from the AD or because the grey market dealer is selling the same piece for less. Either case is a win for the buyer who wants a specific piece. Personally I would much rather support grey market dealers then the ADs most of which continue to display a "do not care" attitude towards a normal buyer.
@mywatchjourney6579
@mywatchjourney6579 Год назад
Yes, dealing in grey goods have been happening for a long time. But I think some dealers lost their heads and assumed that they could keep flipping Rolex and the party would always continue. That was always going to end badly.
@velvetjones1856

You hit the nail on the head. Watch values are dropping and that negates the margins for these grey market watches. This is not unlike the auto industry where cars produced in volumes much lower than demand have always produced the additional dealer markups or sales as a "used" car at an even higher premium . Porsche GT3 & 4 cars going for$100k or more above sticker is common.

As a collector in his fifties, I always buy from trusted dealers, mainly local to where I live. These businesses I have dealt with over the years and built up a good relationship. Anyone with a brain cell could see that the prices on watches were inflated due to the Covid period, and like any product, a ceiling will be reached. For me, I buy to keep. Flipping to me is just distasteful, and it was inevitable that foolish dealers were going to get caught out. I did watch TPG, but only because it was like watching Car Crash TV. The guy had no idea, and it was very comical. Hopefully, the RU-vid flexers will disappear, and we can get back to the subject we all love, namely, the watches themselves.

This is NOT a Ponzi scheme, contrary to what people keep claiming. Anthony's example, to put it in the simplest terms possible, is a case of merchandise theft. He sold merchandise that was consigned to him, and spent the money on his lavish lifestyle, rather than paying the consignor.
@redredred1
@redredred1 Год назад
When a consignor requested their watch back and he didn't have it because it was long sold, he'd sell other peoples' watches in order to give them money instead. That's very Ponzi if you ask me. Take from new people to give to old people.
@jbb-cj1md
@jbb-cj1md Год назад
@@redredred1 True Ponzi schemes are destined to fail, because they are not trading on true assets, they only claim that they are. They are "trading" vapor. Once they run out of new money, they fail, just ask Bernie Madoff. Charles Ponzi claimed to be investing in international reply coupons, but there's no indication he bought or sold a single one, people just believed that he was. Anthony was actually buying and selling real assets (watches), and, assuming that he was legitimate, at least for awhile, he could have presumably still been in business, if he hadn't gotten greedy. If Anthony later became desperate and gave old customers new customers' money, that still doesn't make it a Ponzi scheme. Ponzi schemes are set up as Ponzi schemes at their very inception.

That, and the cynical collusion of his fellow grey market dealers on YT, whose unqualified and glowing endorsements (despite them most likely knowing just how questionable and unsustainable his business practices were) lent him a cloak of legitimacy which he used to lure even more greedy and gullible clients. And now that the whole sordid unfortunate affair is out in the open, all those other dealers are wringing their hands in pretend shock and horror. That’s not how it works lol dealers dont buy at retail and mark it up they buy it at wholesale and sell it at retail. You have to be very careful who you deal with in any business and Anthony definitely isn’t the only bad Apple, he’s the the one with the most attention. There are still great guys and gals out there in the grey market though that’s just a fact and always will be. People want to say the market is dead because prices are dropping but that’s great it’s a buyers market and they just dropped back to what they were before the pandemic. Back to business. It’s arguably stronger now because of it. Also zero grey market dealers have Anthony’s back or anyone alike.
