** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
A quite remarkable sudoku today from Filuta called Think Outside The Snake. Just 6 given digits and a quite extraordinary ruleset are enough to make this a solvable puzzle (although our testers had a devil of a time with it!). Can you work out how to crack it?!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In addition, draw a one-cell-wide snake (ie a non looping or branching string of orthogonally connected cells with two ends - head and tail) that may not touch itself orthogonally such that: the snake divides the rest of the grid into orthogonally connected regions, each of which sums to the same total and contains no repeated digits; and, all given digits belong to the snake and may not decrease when read along the snake from head to tail.
** PATREON REWARDS JUST OUT **
We've just released a brand new Sudoku Hunt from Joseph Nehme themed around Equal Sum Lines! With 13 puzzles in all, this is just a wonderful collection of puzzles. Do have a go if you can.

Hi Filuta. Just wanted to say…that was absolutely stunning. I mean, I was lost for words at how clever parts of the solve path were (so clever in fact that I thought I’d broken it twice before the truth dawned on me both times). That must have taken simply ages to set but the result was worth it. Many thanks and congrats on a quite brilliant construction which will live long in the memory (and regarding kind comments making your day, this sudoku definitely made mine). :)

At 59:29, the snake could also have dipped down and ended in R9C6, thus avoiding the 9 cell orange region. The reason R8C7 had to be orange, was due to it not being possible to put a 9 in the three cell region above it.

I absolutely love this puzzle. At first, it feels like bifurcation is the only way forward. But, through some experimentation, you realize there are tons of really weird geometric restrictions (like how do you connect the 1 to the 3s?). Slowly these “lessons” continue to stack up until you get this mind-blowing, holistic view of the snake, and suddenly there’s only 1 way to make it all work. I really felt like I was doing science during this puzzle-experimenting with different hypotheses and then making conclusions. There IS a fair, logical path through the puzzle, and discovering that was the real joy for me :) many thanks to filuta for setting this, and to Simon for letting us watch it unfold.
@joelstevens5670
@joelstevens5670 2 года назад
Well said Nordy, I totally agree. It’s the restriction in box 6 which I loved and how it forced where most of the snake went but finding the final section of the snake in box 3 was almost as good. It was just miraculous from start to finish.
@ericpraline1302
@ericpraline1302 2 года назад
I guess the question is when does experimentation become bifurcation? :)
@joelstevens5670
@joelstevens5670 2 года назад
@@ericpraline1302 I think the key comes down to how large a deduction is (are there many options) and the extent of the chain which follows. Most of the logic which Simon did involved a small deduction (can this cell be part of the snake) followed by a simple chain (if we take this cell, we can now no longer visit this box). The chain of deductions Simon made around box 2 would have also been much shorter had he noted the effect on box 5 (he’d already proved that there were at least 5 region cells in it, so adding 2 more would break the puzzle). Some more shading and pen notation would have been useful of course to show possible region cells and boundaries which couldn’t be crossed (to aid memory). It is worth noting as well that Simon’s approach is often to shade cells gradually as a way of being more careful (which makes sense) but it can make the logic feel more complicated than it actually is (if a snake has to enter a box and leave from that side, we can easily trace 4 cells in one step, rather than adding each cell individually and considering it as 4 steps). As Nordy said, experimenting with the geometry is part of understanding the puzzle and one way to apply that is to look at how the snake travels between digits and boxes. Anyway, I hope all of that makes sense. In general I think Mark uses longer chains, probably because he is able to keep track of them, whereas with Simon it is usually a case of missing the simple chain and then disproving the relatively short one after making things easier to see (and sometimes you just have to find a way, so long as it isn’t totally random guessing). :)

I have to brag a bit. This is the best solve I've had this month. 46:01. I think hardest part of the puzzle was completely disproving 2-cell regions. Once I found that 2-cell cages forced there to be a contradictory 6-cell region, everything went into turbo mode. This was sublime setting. It's crazy how Filuta fit interesting killer logic behind the snake part. I'm a bit shocked that this puzzle can even exist.

Small point: At the very end of the snake-building (59:30), Simon didn't appreciate that the snake could have taken R8C7 and then R9C6, which would have broken up the big orange region across the bottom. However, it still couldn't have worked because 3 3-cell regions in just 2 boxes+1 cell and there aren't enough high numbers to fill them.

I agree the logic used to say R8C7 is orange wasn't correct, however if it was blue then it would result in two 3 cell cages of orange that both need to be 589. 4 of those cells are in box 8, so it is broken, and R8C7 can't be blue.

Here's an analogy I always think of when this comes up: Mark is a sprinter; Simon is a marathon runner. If you put a marathon runner in a sprint, they'll definitely finish the race, probably with a respectable time, but they won't win. But if you put a sprinter in a marathon, they might not even be able to finish. Look forward to a brilliant puzzle and solve as always (I will of course try it first but I enjoy the way you so often bring the logic out so beautifully in ways others can miss). Keep on cracking. :)

58:30 Small error in logic here. r8c7 could be blue, if the head of the snake were at r9c6, dividing the orange region in half. But, it would fail for another reason, as the two resulting three cell regions would have to both be 589, which would clash in box 8. :-D

This puzzle was an absolute masterpiece, and a brilliant and well explained solve by Simon. I found a couple of short cuts for determining the snake’s path and min-maxing the region sums/areas which made the solve a bit faster. Time = 56:28. I’m also considering submitting some of my own creations for consideration - would Logic Masters Germany be the best choice, or is there a way to upload them to the CTC website ? Once again, love the puzzles on the channel, particularly the “minimalist” (few, or no starting digits) ones 😎

When you do supposition tests and explorations put a mark on the spot that you are testing, then when you get to the end of that series of tests use the UNDO to clean all the mess up. It seems like almost every puzzle you have something like what you got at 28:25 happening and sometimes you even have spent a minute or 2 thinking about how some pencil mark got there.

1:03:17 I saw a cool logic thing! You considered what would happen if the 5-cell region had an 8 in it. I'd already been considering if it had a 9 in it. Clearly it could have one or the other, but not both. However, if there's an 8 in it, that would put the 9 in box 6 into column 7 and, since the 9 couldn't go in the 5-cell region along with the 8, it wouldn't have anywhere to go in box 3. So, 8 couldn't possibly be in the 5-cell region. I am very proud of myself for seeing this cool logic thing (I waited to post this comment until I got to where Simon figured out there was a 9 in the 5 cell region by similar, related, but not identical logic)

I think in order to solve this sort of puzzle with a chain of forward logical deductions, you'd need to prove a set of lemmas about snakes and orthogonally connected remaining regions first, and probably have a way of marking some statements you could deduce, such as that the snake must cross some line you draw.

At around 59:25, couldn't r8c7 still be blue if r9c6 was also blue to prevent the oversized region?

At 17:06, Simon uses some weird logic to explain why the snake has to visit every 3 by 3 region based on the fact the total in this region would be 45. It's look like there must be some deeply hidden secret behind this statement. I wish Simon had explained what he meant there. That's some favor he should do to his favorite people!

59:30 r8c7 being blue wouldn't necessarily create a big region, if the snake ended in r9c6. But it would create two 3 cell orange regions, one of which wouldn't be able to have a 9 in it, i think.
@MaximusLongus
@MaximusLongus 2 года назад
They'd both need to be 589 since 6 is ruled out by sudoku and since r7c6 and the left region share box 8 this breaks the puzzle.
@BookofAeons
@BookofAeons 2 года назад
59:20 that could have been blue. You could extend the snake to divide that "enormous" region into a 3 cell and a 5 cell. I'm not seeing at a glance what the problem with that is. edit: Ah, you'd have two 3-cell regions poking into box 8, neither of which could contain a 6.

@EdoTimmermans
@EdoTimmermans 2 года назад
Indeed and in addition to that with r9c6 being blue: because one of these 3-cell regions is inside box 8 completely, it is not possible for both of these 3-cell regions to be {5, 8, 9}.

63:37 for me. I’m not gonna lie, I’m still not sure how I got the shape of the snake to work. On the other hand, I loved the sudoku part of the puzzle. I’ll have to watch the video to fully appreciate the puzzle this time. Edit: Well, Simon path looks very similar to what I did. I guess it depends on what you consider bifurcation for this one.

I feel like there's quite a bit of dodgy logic at several points in this solve pertaining to snake building. For example, the way Simon completes the snake around the 1 hour mark neglects the option of r9c6 being the snake tip, which would create two 3-cell and a 5-cell region, i.e. not broken according to the logic applied.
@MaximusLongus
@MaximusLongus 2 года назад
While Simon doesn't mention it, this solution actually wouldn't be valid. Consider the two 3-cell regions. By Sudoku, the 6s in boxes 5 and 8 rule out that either could contain a 6. Therefore both would need to be 589 triplets to sum up to 22. The 3-cell region completely in box 8 therefore must contain all these three digits. This means, that r7c6 cannot contain either digit required to be in the upper right 3-cell region in question, breaking the puzzle.

59:25 "That [r8c7] can't be blue, this would create an enourmous orange region" - no, if r9c6 is blue, it would still work out, with two 3-cell and 5-cell regions. (It doesn't work out because the 3-cell region above it doesn't have space for a 9 anymore, so no harm done, but the logic was wrong at this point.)
