Thanks for an interesting and well-researched piece. I've looked at the Think Tank incest but never how it connects with outside organisations (so all of the Cross-pollination of staff and transferring funds from big Think Tanks to smaller ones, often internationally). The ADF ("Alliance Defending Freedom"), a US Christian Nationalist Think Tank that employed the current US House Speaker and contributor to the "Legal Challenge" attempt to overthrow the 2020 Election, for example spends millions in Africa and Europe on anti-Gay, anti-Trans, anti-Abortion Right wing fundamentalists. So now I have a whole *other* side of it that I want to understand. You can't understate just how awful these groups are, and people like you raising awareness like this is genuinely awesome!

I still maintain that the chinless wonder from the IEA (Littlewood or Littlecock to his mates) is a Paul Whitehouse tribute act. James O'Brien loves think tanks. I think he was threatened with libel based on comments about their opaque funding.

Sheldon Whitehouse has a video series called The Scheme, which covers how 401(c) charity organizations do the same thing in the USA.

Think Tanks also allow the presenting of idea on talk shows etc without a government having to chuck in a minister. If a minister came out with some of this stuff it would be jumped on. A think tank however can say it, judge the reaction etc.

There's one of these in Australia, the IPA (Institute of Public Affairs). Sounds virtually identical, pushing all the worst things in the country. To put the icing on the cake , it was started by Rupert Murdoch's father.

What about Chatham House? They are often held up as the pinnacle of think tanks. And there's even speaking engagement customs called "Chatham House Rules." Im curious where they fit into this.

Couldn’t agree more mate. These think tanks just think in one way - and that should not be the purpose of such a group. To me a ‘think tank’ is a place where ALL thoughts and ideas are produced, examined and judged on their merits - not just to reinforce pre-ordained concepts.

Not sexy, but it is extremely important. Your average punter needs to understand these guys. If they did, I think they’d trust politicians a lot less.

What is a think tank? Basically, it's a lobby group with a reference list and occasionally an appendix.

The bottom line is that the Charities Commission is set up to regulate cat shelters and orphanages, not politically powerful groups funding by almost limitless pots of wealth. The Think Tanks simply have more power than the regulator. There needs to be a separate regulator to prevent this stuff, and a robust system of laws and regulations that prevent Think Tanks for acting in the way they do. This is unlikely to happen because the current situation is financially beneficial to politicians. It's like residential rental reform being unlikely because of how many MPs are landlords.

I knew a guy who worked for a popular right wing think tank. Loved the work, the people etc. When he couldn't get into his university of choice they dropped him. He went completely insane and joined a cult. Correlation doesn't to causation and everything, but yeah, i think's their main cliente is the easily impressionable.

My proposal would be to ban all non party think tanks and integrate existing think tanks into political party economic regulations

3:28 I personally think if ALL economic activity is subject to possible taxation, then the Government NEEDS to pay attention to How Things Work In Practice and not Blue Sky theories. Asking for the government to Not Be Involved with the economic activity within their borders is asking that people over a certain income should be fully exempt from all rules so long as They're Smart-ish About It. Or pay someone smarter than them to cover their tracks. No gods or kings. That includes the executive class, too.
