Active noise cancellation might help knock down some of the engine noise. Pretty much put a mic near the driver's ears, feed that signal into an audio amp which drives a speaker, but swap the polarity of the wires going to the speaker. If that works a bit, you can make it fancier by gutting a pair of active noise cancelling headphones and using the output to the ear cup speakers to drive the audio amp & speaker.

We wish researchers and workers in the technology and engineering department to find plans for the new car industry Because new cars should be flying saucers in the sky and These flying saucers must have three perks 1 / The flying saucers must be self-driving so that everyone can use them 2 / The autonomous driving of flying saucers must be based on artificial intelligence programs 3/Artificial intelligence must rely on the new Google Maps in order to direct the launch of flying saucers to the desired places . Send these three basic demands to the technicians and engineers in the mechanics and technology department in order to make flying saucers

Nice to see honest opinions from someone about there own build. Its too easy to just pretend what you did is all spot on and perfect. 4JJ1 would be a good choice in the Diesel world but i reckon a Barra with around 380 RWKW would be tough to beat and the 25 odd grand of fuel you could buy with the savings would go a long way.

And quite rightly so! The vehicle was engineered for a given mass for a wide array of reasons. Brakes, suspension, chassis and so on could all be inadequate. As much as I am not a fond a large US pickup trucks, if people are going to tow 3500kg and heavier caravans around, they are likely a far better option.

Readily available here, cheap, strong straight 6 3.0l common rail. Very similar to the OM606. There is an English company that sell stand alone cracked ecu’s for not much so would make a great swap that other ozzys could copy as engines are available here. I think they run the same ZF auto as the Barra and adapters for these to patrol cases are available off the shelf so again, nothing too fancy. So cheap smooth revy power with modern common rail and matching auto. Wining combo maybe? Keep it up lads 👍

Always good to hear Al talk about the engineering that goes into these projects. Watching a youtube video, you don't really get a feel of the cost of such conversions.. I mean, if there is all that custom fabrication, then it will get expensive if you are not doing the work yourself. And we also need to bear in mind, these things take time as well. It's not something that can get done in a week.. Probably takes months. The one take away from this is there is no BS coming from Al's mouth... well except for the part about Dodge Gearboxes not being good. LOL. I've heard about Cummins powered Ram 2500s getting over 500,000 kms with no issues. It all depends on the maintenance...

love the ep. very calm and straight forward and most of all informative. i'm more of a GO FASTER person than a bush basher but i still really enjoy all the builds regardless of what they are. every build i learn things and that's is one the the greatest reasons i keep coming back. when i finally get my project underway, i hope i remember one particular piece of advice from al's words of wisdom. use ya brain! i love the sound of a GM 8V92. would that fit in the next one? lol.

If you had the room for it, compounds quiet the motor down and reduce EGTs. Probably the best option for a single turbo would be a Super 9 hybrid from PDD, but they are not inexpensive (they build those themselves). Use all OEM mounts if you can, they quiet the engine down a lot. I did a swap of a OM617 into a car, it was incredibly loud until I found out that the transmission mount was contacting the frame. The noise dropped a tremendous amount after I made clearance for that mount.

Hey Al here in the states commercial trucks use what is called a Jake Brake which use's engine compression to slow down Semi's here in the state's I am 69 years old and used to drive big Rigs back in the 70's and 80's and in a lot of high mountain driving so we always had Jake brake's on our trucks.

big difference in a 50 ton big rig and a three ton 4wd also i believe his talking about low range off roading where the general idea is to put the transmission in first or second gear with the transfer case in low range and just let the engine idle down a steep tricky decent at walking pace

I don't really like VGTs, but they have the added benefit of exhaust braking functionality. If you don't end up swapping to a VGT it's for sure worth installing an exhaust brake, especially if you doing any towing. Love the build 👌🏼 Perfect rig! I'm def biased tho have a 15L Cummins in my Kenworth

I too was thinking om606, cause they do go quite well, but I can’t for the life of me find one, the common rail 613’s are much more available, but I don’t know what the ability to tune them are. The other option is the M57 or N57, I know nothing about these but I feel like aftermarket support in Australia might be a little more available. Once again I have no idea, but that’s what I’ve been toying with

After watching the build series and some deboss garage stuff, I thought about an Italian/eu version of those swaps. Here we have a few big diesel engine and those aren't cheap by any means, talking about vw v10 o v12 tdi or Mercedes v8. Like the Cummins we have some iveco engines out of light duty trucks, iveco tector 5.9 and 4.5 (6 and 4 cylinder) turbodiesel with common rail

Enjoyed the "debrief" video. Personally, I wouldn't use a Cummins in anything unless the vehicle is being used for towing or hauling. For an off-roader, I'd lean toward LS-something. But this was a fun project to watch and I'm glad we got to see it unfold. Methinks Al will be selling this Patrol to its next victim before too long.

Before doing the ls3 and 6l80 swap in my Landcruiser I talked to a few guys that had done ls1 and ls2 swaps in there cars, they wanted more power and said the swap wasn’t that much better than the stock 4.5 petrol cruiser engine. I’m happy I went the ls3 and 6l80 but even doing all the work myself like Al also drawing on a number of other conversions it’s still expensive and takes hundreds of hours to do it right. I think these days in Australia the only semi budget friendly option would be a Barra turbo.
@moabman6803
@moabman6803 2 года назад
A ls1 and ls2 is leaps and bounds more powerful over the 4.5. The ls3 just has good cylinder heads and the camshaft comes on later in the rpm range to make impressive sounding peak numbers. The power curve overall is what's important.

Awesome build summary! For a larger SUV like a Patrol I'd do a Ford 7.3L gas V8 if I could, pretty small and lightweight (for the capacity) with output of 430hp (320kw)/475lb-ft (645nm) on the crate engine. I drive the commercial variant of it in my work truck which is only 350hp/470lb-ft, it's fantastic for pulling around a 15-20,000lb (7-9,000kg) vehicle, has a load of low-end torque and gets decent fuel economy for what it is.
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 3 года назад
Figure torque is 2x the horsepower on any I6 diesel. I'd think an HX-35 would be fine, maybe an HX 35/40 hybrid. VP injection pump would go a long way towards tuning. No idea how prevalent that pump is over there though. I know guys praise the P7100 pump, but for tuning its like changing springs and weights in a distributor, then jets in the carburetor. Yeah it can be dialed in... but it takes a lot of trial and error. VP equipped engine can crank out 400hp no problem and not sacrifice bottom end response as long as the turbo is matched for the desired RPM range.

Noise? Daily drove an 04 Dodge for years, loved the sound it makes. As for what I'd swap, BMW N57. Not sure about in the Patrol (we don't get those over here) in terms of weight, but nice and light for a smaller off roader build.
@abpsd73
@abpsd73 3 года назад
Glad you touched on torque vs HP, most people hear low HP numbers for a diesel and think it is gutless, when the reality is it is far more powerful since it's torque output is far higher and usually at about half the RPM.
@gunderd
@gunderd 3 года назад
Gearboxes can convert high rpm + low torque into low rpm + high torque, and vice versa. It's still ultimately the horsepower (torque * rpm) at the engine that matters.
@theskidfactory
@theskidfactory 3 года назад
Until you add external load to the vehicle via towing and your high power 8 speed auto 2l twin turbo diesel suddenly isn't the same. Gearing cannot replace engine torque.
@gunderd
@gunderd 3 года назад
There's definitely a question of comfort. A small engine screaming along at 8000rpm and a bar of boost producing 300hp is going to be a lot less comfortable to drive compared to a huge loping diesel making the same horsepower at 3000rpm, but at the end of the day they'll still both be capable of doing the same amount of work and making the same output torque @ rpm with appropriate gearing. And yes, I accept that the pocket rocket will no doubt overheat and live a short life due to the relative stress it would be under. Anyway, it's a dumb pedantic argument so sorry for clogging up the comments. Great content btw..

My truck is a 2001 single cab Mitsibushi Canter 4x4 that's been converted into a motorhome. It's way too underpowered as it is but it would definitely be cheaper for me to do a conversion rather than a complete rebuild!

I think a few people give up on the ZD's a little early, a lot of the problems stem from Nissan making them actually comply with Euro emissions standards with the re-circulation of gasses and theres a problem there when it essentially begins with one little thing, buggering up another little thing which in turn leads to the over-pressure from the turbo, clogged MAF, overfueling on some cylinders, leaning out in others, cats and dogs living together and explosions. So I completely understand if people throw them away! Actually fixing the ZD30 is possible, but its also requiring some diesel boys on the tools that know their stuff and a not inexpensive amount of big ticket items into the engine bay. Is that cheaper than a full engine swap? Yes, is it worth it to know you're more or less running it with a lot of aftermarket parts that need specialist techs to fix? That's really up to you as the owner and what you use the vehicle for and your access to those guys during the higher level servicing or go with the full swap to something with known reliability that can be fixed by lesser mortals.

Couple quick questions about transmissions… Did you consider a G56 6 speed manual from a Ram truck or a 5 speed manual? The second would be did you consider an Allison? They make adapter plates for the Cummins. However, they still have to be built if you are increasing the power levels a whole lot. I do agree that a modern common rail 5.9L is quieter than a 24V or 12V P-Pump. I have a soft spot for the older mechanical fuel pump engines though. The “diesel clatter” just reminds me of farm tractors. You can tune a common rail to sound like a mechanical fuel pump engine.
