Nice PC for the business users. Camera and mics are good. Display is good. Port selection is good although they should have put one of the USB-C ports on the other side. Battery life is good for the business user traveling on planes etc. Great review as always.
Would love to see you review the OLED iteration of the X1 Carbon Gen 11. Maybe even a side by side comparasion with the FHD+ display and battery hit caused by OLED. That would be awesome.
For a screen with this resolution the iris xe really doesn't cut it anymore. I'm waiting on a refresh on integrated graphics before buying a new machine. Thanks for the review Andrew.
I have gen 8 and still its an amazing laptop. The portability, battery life, screen, amazing keyboard and most importantly the build quality make this laptop a purchase for at least 5 years.
except in 3 years battery degrades much faster than my 2015 old macbook pro 13. With battery power mode in win-10 I now get around 3 hours of web browsing
I am struggling to decide between Dell XPS 15 and X1 Carbon (Gen 11). I would be primarily using for casual and learning purpose (cyber security, so running multiple Virtual machines, netork security, pen testing and for those stuff). and I would like to use for really long time like 5 Years. which laptop would you segest out of the two. Also, is easy to get used to the ctrl key as its differently placed from my work laptop. Thank you.
Another excellent laptop review from the one and only AMD! There is a lot to like regarding the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 for 2023, however not without it's negatives. What stands out for me is the great battery life, decent port selection, the crisp 1080p webcam and very clear internal mics. For a Windows laptop, the audio quality of the built-in speakers is pretty good but no comparison to the MacBook Pro. Aside from the negatives, this is a worthy product for the business professional which will get the job done at the end of the day. Brilliant review Andrew!! 👍😁
@@a.w2776Did you not see the video in it's entirety? It has soldered RAM, there is no 4K option this time, no higher refresh rate option, it throttles under heavy load and it collects fingerprints!
Just got my X1 Gen10 with Intel i7 1260p and 32GB of RAM. What a delicious machine… It works so well. I used to think Apple laptops where the “greatest” to the touch… well, they are great for sure, but the X1 is even better! I feel like touching a U2 Dragon Lady or a Lockheed SR71 XD It’s super light , but at the same time, it feels VERY premium, durable and robust. The keyboard is outstanding. We all know that. It never gets hot, no matter how many hours (not on heavy work) I use it. It stays mildly warm and that’s it. AMAZING machine… Just gotta keep it up to date and it will run like a fine Swiss watch. Thank you , Andrew..! You helped me to make the right choice (at least for my needs). I’m totally satisfied with this buy! Greetings from Chile, friend!
@@marvij200 Hi José! I friend of mine that works for Lenovo bought it for me. Please consider that we live in Chile… probably different market, different stock. When I decided to get my X1, the website said they had one or two in stock. Mine has a 1920x1200 (touch) IPS screen and I love it... It’s not “wow!” but it surely enough. I believe it’s going to take a few more months for us to see the Gen11 available to the public.
@@TDAmeritrader 1200p at 14-inches with good color accuracy is a good display. That is 162 pixel per inch (PPI). Similar PPI for a 4k 27-inch monitor from Dell or LG.
I agree! This laptop has the best feel in the hands. I have a gen 10 i5 with the 2.8k. Had a MacBook Pro 14 m1, also a very premium feel, but I think I prefer the soft touch of the Thinkpad. The Mac still has sharp edges when resting your wrist.
I have a gen 7. Some issues I had was the known "battery not detected" issue Lenovos have. I had to unplug the battery and plug it back in. Also the trackpad suddenly stopped working, and I had to press it down to solve the issue (also known lenovo issue). The laptop does run hot when plugged in (like most thin and light laptops). I like the lightweight, battery life, keyboard, and durability. I do not like the price for what you get (got mine from Costco for $1299 when lenovo had it $1600+), the built quality can be better, newer models are pretty much the same as the 7 gen. I do recommend this laptop if you can buy it at a good price. Don't think of it much as a "business" laptop. It is a laptop like the Dell xps and other thin and light laptops. It is not a workstation like the P series.
Excellent review Andrew, I really share your enthisiasm for this laptop series. Writing this on an X1C Gen 11, i7 1355U 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and 2.8K OLED. I must say I am getting nowhere near the battery life numbers you were getting in the test it is approaching I'd say half of what you acheieved. Do you think this difference is all mediated by the difference in our screen options alone? It must be as that is the only sig. difference between our units. I also find the top left hand corner of the laptop does run hot tith loud fans typically when plugged in and under load (I often switch to best energy effiency to stop this happen).
I have the gen 10 i5 with the 2.8k Oled, and battery life is pretty bad unless I’m doing light office work. But to me the better display is worth the trade off. I keep the power set to balanced or efficient and with all the latest bios and drivers updated It runs cool and quiet. Before the updates it ran pretty hot. Maybe they will update the bios soon for the gen 11
Can you compare battery life vs Gen 9 which was unanimously voted as one of the best battery life laptops in the Lenovo series ? Many reviews I read on Gen 11 is that not much improved vs Gen 10 and most day battery life for every day tasks is 7-8 hrs (not >10 hrs)
Very diligent and comprehensive review. I have to say, none of those speakers sound any better than the speakers in my Gen 5 Thinkpad. The same goes for the display; it is no better than the display on this Gen 5.
This seems a good portable portion of a more powerful desktop solution. With external monitors, blue-toothed peripherals (Logitech MX keys keyboard and MX Master 3 mouse) and a CalDigit TS3 thunderbolt dock, I am wondering if an eGPU might make this a viable option for occasional desktop video editing and multiplexing. Does this sound like a rational approach - and if so, do you have a suggested eGPU?
I know you have the Carbon g11 and yoga g8. Which is the more unique upgrade from last year as I get the new models every year to showcase my clients. Currently I have the carbon g10 but unsure between the 2 of these as the more unique upgrade from 2022.
Hi Andrew I'm Zandro from the Phlippines, have been watching your unboxing and review videos and they are all awesome. I hope you can do a review or unboxing of MSI Titan GT77HX 13V. I'm currently scouting for a mobile desktop machine. Thanks in advance and more power.
For the "love of whatever" I wish Lenovo would continue to offer a 4K screen on the 14" X1. I know they think it isn't necessary and opt for a lighter laptop vs a higher resolution screen. But I travel frequently and I much prefer a high resolution screen. I've always had a 4K screen 3840 x 2160 . Please, please, please!!
Based on this reviewer’s reported numbers, my main takeaways here are that this is a very expensive thin and light notebook with bottom tier performance, second tier battery life, high fan noise, and with thermals somewhere between lava and the surface of the sun. Pretty disappointing.
i have the same model and I do agree. Just dont feel like its worth what I paid for it. I have x1 titanium which is just as good but with less ports, gets hotter, and touchpad sucks for half the price.
Would love to see a head to head comparison with the new Asus B9404 OLED ExpertBook vs the X1 Carbon, both of which are catering to the business sector.
5:20 Hmmm.. Is this the case in the US/north Amercan region? Because in the scandinavian/Nordic region of the EU, it's not. 32 gm ram is the maximum. And you only have 16 or 32 gb as options, and only if you go with a i7 processor (and not the cheapest one, nor of course, if you go with the i5 processor option. Then you only get the 16 gb ram option)
I just got one of these and it has heat issues when plugged in. It is common to this model so please do more research than just this video. I'm likely going to return it with the 14-day satisfaction guarantee.
I am wondering about the same aspect. this laptop can be configured with Intel® Core™ i7-1370P vPro®-processor. With P processor how will the thermal look like?
Not really, Lenovo has often great sales (got a x1 gen10 with 1260P 32GB 1TB and 5G for 1600CHF) compared to the new MacBook which starts at 1200CHF for students the price to value ratio is extremely good for thinkapds (if you want a business and no gaming laptop)
I’d agree that it’s expensive, but I wouldn’t consider it overpriced when compared to other premium built thin-and-lights. As someone who uses both MacBooks and Thinkpads, I’m in the market for a 14”-15”, sub-1.5kg laptop. I’ve specced my X1 Carbon with an i7, 32gb ram, 1400p IPS, 5-year warranty, and 5G WWAN. With the current promotion Lenovo is running, it’s $200 cheaper than the new MacBook Air 15 while being comparable in performance, and you get double the ram, 2 more years of warranty, and 5G. And if I wait for a sale or a coupon to drop, I could widen that price gap even further. Again, not cheap. It’s a premium laptop. But I wouldn’t call it crazy expensive, considering what you get. There’s nothing else with the same build quality, keyboard quality, and weight-to-performance ratio at that price. The only other competition in the PC space that comes close are the LG Gram, Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro and HP Elite series, but those are even more expensive than the X1 when you spec them with 13th gen i7 and 32gb ram. And all of them have worse keyboards and no 5G options.
@@yarakharam5343 sucks unfortunately, with Linux I get ~4-5 hours. Had way better experience with my XPS 9370. The cooling is also pretty bad. Otherwise it's a perfect laptop.
Hi Andrew - Do you you think the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is a higher quality laptop compared to ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 (2023)? Which device is more premium? I am looking to purchase a laptop for a school child is aged 15. What do you reommend out of these laptops?
Hello! I understand that oled screens have problems, so do some macbook models and apple recognized the problem. In search of better battery performance, I think I'd go for the screen: "14" WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%sRGB, 400 nits, 60Hz, Low Power, LED Backlight ". I also like that display "14" 2.2K (2240 x 1400), IPS, anti-glare, non-touch, 100% sRGB, 300 nits, 60Hz" but I have a doubt if 300 NITS is very low brightness, maybe someone can guide me. very grateful for the help.
Is this really worth the price? I just bought the Lenovo Slim 7i with 13th gen Intel Core i7-1360P, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2.8K 400nit 120Hz display for $1050 USD all in. Hopefully you have this newer Slim 7i model coming in for your review soon.
@@DonnieChoi Returned it. It's a very good laptop for the price (paid $1050 all-in) but I realized I needed a convertible and lighter laptop. Ports are great but wish it also had a Micro SD card slot.
Fujitsu U94A More "Business Laptop" Rather Than This 😂. They Had Full Hdmi and Lan Port, micro sd slot, 64 Wh battery, 5G Option, Intel 13 Gen P Series, and weight only 900 gram.
I’m in the market for a thinkpad x1c do you think I should go with the deals of the 11th gen or go with the 12th gen not sure if the upgrade is substantial
The X1 Carbon gen 11 is lighter, better battery life, better sound system, more ports, and less expensive on the base model. The Dell Latitude 9440 has a better base model display at 1600p and better heat management. I'd give the latest X1 Carbon the win if the heat management isn't a deal breaker.
I have heard that the max ram for x1 nano gen 3 is only 16 gb instead of gen 2s 32 gb , I don't know why Lenovo did this but this is not enough in 2023
They are always tinkering on what could possibly be better or even be the best....either they doing all this on purpose or they are seriously fools... Fooling us with their innovations but bad build quality inside like thermal issues, etc ..then again its all about business, making money quickly but never even bothering to understand the customers complaints seriously... Truly sad..
I'm trying to choose between the 5G and the 4G/LTE modem. If I go with the 5G modem for the Gen11 and I find myself in a 4G coverage area of a city, will I still be able to surf the web and do things as usual with only 4G signal strength? This may sound silly but I'm assuming the 5G option will, in addition to 5G, will do exactly what the 4G will do. The 4G on the other hand is limited to just 4G or below. Thanks in advance for the response.
Hi Andrew, What laptop should I choose from Dell XPS 13 plus and Lenovo Thinkpad X1carbon 11th gen? Main utilisation will be for MS Excel, multimedia. Colour accuracy is a must. Any other option that should be put into consideration will be highly appreciated.
I just got the OLED variant of Gen 11 with i5-1335u 2 weeks back, its absolutely beautiful with resolution of 2.8K. Its my 2nd thinkpad after a very long time and I dont regeret my decision even though it cost me almost 3000 USD here in India. But do note that battery life will be shorter by at atleast couple of hours compared to the IPS panel. Also the screen tends to dim slightly after exactly 5 minutes when watching any video- youtube, netflix, amazon prime etc. Unable to figure out why as tried to play around with all the possible settings. Go with the OLED if you can manage with about 6 hours battery life doing normal stuff.
@@ackyash Hello! I understand that the oled contrast problem, some macbook models also have it and apple recognized the problem. @@C3s4rLuc0 300 nits is too low. Go for the 400 nits or if you can afford get the 500 nits screen. Other than the OLED, the 500 nits is the best option.
I had a gen 7, and it has the same flaws as this one. The headphone jack has to be on the other side, otherwise is a struggle when you an external mouse. The fan exhaust/intake cannot be on the bottom, because you cannot keep the laptop on your legs otherwise. The mousepad is still atrocious, with the two buttons, which make it so outdated. The support for Linux has to be verified, but probably sucks. Two things used to be, and still are, great: keyboard and weight. Overall build construction is very good, but I won't buy it.
Using Thinkpad gen 9 and they looking the same nothing changed only the cpu, i have the most premium model 32gb ram with carbon fiber on the back, and i have to say this laptop is very expensive and not worth it, very poor battery life and the trackpad is just a horrible, and get hot so easy, i really regret selling my Huawei matebook x pro fantastic battery almost triple what i get now and the trackpad was very much better and bigger even the build quality was premium than Thinkpad, a honest advice don't buy this laptop look for other options much cheaper.
What a shame. Everything is soldered, keyboard has smaller travelling distance. Remove trackpoint and ports, and you'll get a generic laptop with Thinkpad shield. Lenovo killed the brand literally.
2.2k IPS Screen ?.WTF!. NOT EVEN 1440P ?. Even my Gen3 has 1440p IPS but just not as bright. Great indoors, not so much outdoors, not that anyone uses this in the park or some where like that!
Lenovo sticking with Intel for these thin and mobile machines is borderline idiotic. As a Lenovo aficionado, I realize time and time again how retrograde this company is.
I have gen 5 with max 16gb at that time and its still going good five years on. Whats disappointing is that nothing has changed in 5 years from levovo innovation perspective. You get the cpu and audio etc from oem components buy otherwise not much change. I was hoping at the least they do away with audio jack and add another usbc and bring the weight down by a notch.
Still can't hold a candle to the LG gram lineup unfortunately, in terms of performance, portability AND value. Those machines are just amazing aren't they?!
This guy is a lier or he is not doing his review well. This keyboard is not the typical X1, it reminds me a lot to the ugly mac keyboard which was released and discontinued a few years ago. Not a pleasure typing on it.
