An exciting and scenic hike and solo rock climb up the 3rd Flatiron in Boulder, Colorado, after recent snows. A thrilling down climb on Winkywoo 5.6 completed the adventure! Huge icicles on the rock face definitely warranted additional awareness and caution. Right before I started climbing a big one broke off and came exploding down the face. I was grateful for the warning and luckily did not see any more of that during the climb though I still positioned my self very carefully.

Grew up in Boulder back in the 50's and 60s, we lived a few blocks from the foot of Flagstaff Mt. just to the north. Running wild on both mountains was part of our childhood, I never did climb the 3rd, so I enjoyed this. It was a special little town back then, the change is so complete that almost hurts to visit it, although the same thing is true everywhere...Thanks for posting.

Great background story sir! Yes the Flatirons were a constant part of my rock climbing skill development. Yes it can be almost unbearably crowded on a constant basis, that's of course true for the entire front range today 😞. But we're all in it together, making the best of it ...

Just incredible, my man! What an amazing climb fit for the skilled and brave at heart. For the rest of us - thrilling entertainment.

Thanks Randy, this is the climb I would take you on roped up, not free solo, but, on a slightly easier/different route, no snow or ice and a rappel off, not a down climb. That top part, the first climb sequence in the video is the toughest part you'd do (I down climbed it, can't be that bad), it has smaller edges and foot smearing, (friction moves on low angle rock)) to get up it but honestly, I am quite sure it is in your skill set if you have interest. I took my dad when he was over 65. He's 83 now! One thing I will say, too much bravery without a rope will get you hurt. I don't do solo climbs that take much bravery on my part, it has to be skill and confidence, fear can keep you safe by telling you when it's time to back off, which I did in my next video! It was epic anyway! Any timeline on our trip videos?

@@KarlDeckerPresents Thanks for thinking of me! Yeah, looking at 4 more videos from the trip I did with Julie in June. Maybe a Christmas upload and then our CO stuff. So, thinking early-mid January? Can't wait to get started on those edits!

I have been rock climbing for 35 years, quite aggressively for 20. I think it is like walking next to a highway, one slip and. . . But people don’t usually think twice about that. I very rarely rely on just one hold in case a hold fails and I test every suspicious hold. I have also gym climb weekly for the last 10 years and that is great training. I can clamp on to and hang from tiny holds and have learned how to use core tension to literally hold onto the rock with my feet alone. Although it does not appear so on the surface, rock climbing can be very complex and often counter intuitive. Experience confidence and knowing your limits are all crucial too. The little bear traverse was a true test of my personal confidence, very intimidating yet rewarding.

Heck yes brother! This was a great training run for one Fat Gnarly adventure I just did up Kelso Ridge, major snowy icy battle that came out pretty darn sweet! Thanks for your support!

super cool video, love all the drone shots and music... funny thing I was going to ask you if you wanted to climb the flatirons together. that 5.6 downhill looks tough is that the only option down?

We could just bring rope, there are some overhanging sections and it is kind of a head game

It's holding the camera, AND icicles were occasionally raining down from above as they melted. I was nervous as hell after seeing a big one explode down the face as I was putting on my climbing shoes. Here's a funny story. The first climbing clip ascending the top of the 3rd, that is actually video played in reverse of me down climbing from the top! I was so freaked out by the falling ice I decided against messing with the camera at all on the way up and just stay focused on a route protected from ice fall! Mostly I do no wear a helmet but more and more as many climbers are above me these days, anyone drops anything or knocks off a rock, I could be toast. . . I have a way better chance of surviving with the helmet on . . .
