Shae, you are so inspiring! I've started several etsy stores over the years and always knew they had potential but then lacked the confidence to put real effort into them after launching. I see now it takes dedication and daily effort. Ive just been giving up before even giving my stores a chance. Seeing your videos has inspired me to list several items every day this week. Hopefully I can repeat your success over the long term!

I just came to say that I'm really learning a lot from you and that I really appreciate your videos. I started a digital download Etsy shop in March and I am following along with your timeline and progress just at a couple months behind. So far I'm at 55 listings with what I think is a healthy number of sales. I was just starting to think about how to switch around my ads when this video came out. Perfect timing. Thank you so much for being so candid and clear with everything! Also, it's nice that you are just being you and are not like other obnoxious/aggressive clickbait-y Etsy seller RU-vidrs -- you create such trust and I feel safe listening to your opinions and methods in your videos! Thanks for everything :)

Oh my gosh thank you so much for this comment! Seriously my whole vibe is just being so honest and authentic (something that is definitely lacking among a lot of Etsy RU-vidrs) and I'm so glad that's coming across in the videos! I truly want to help other beginners and be just a few months ahead and lead the way. Your progress is amazing!! 55 listings is great and I'm glad you are getting sales!! Definitely keep going, my thoughts are if you can get 10 sales, why not 1,000, or 10,000!? That's at least what I tell myself hahaha. Anyways keep me posted on your progress, I'd love to hear how your shop continues to grow :)

Hello! Firstly, I'm so glad I found your channel and am really grateful for your content. Your approach is open and honest but without the waffle that some other videos have, ha! My question is about the number of listings you have so I'm really sorry if you've answered this before - can you tell us how many listings you opened your shop with, please? I know you've said you add 3 new ones a day, so have you done that every single day since opening? It would be really great if you could do a video/include your listings in your monthly recaps, like how many you added that month and how many you removed that weren't working etc. I'm in the process of opening (aren't we all!) and was wondering if it's a good idea to prep 5-10 (digital products) listings before 'launching' the store? I remember seeing in one of your other videos or shorts that Etsy doesn't like it when you add a load of new listings at once and they could shut you down, so would you recommend just getting 1 live on there and then adding daily? Soo many questions lol, apologies!! Once again, love your channel and can't wait to see the video saying you've hit 6 figures!
@whatshaesells
@whatshaesells Год назад
Hi Emily, so sorry I didn’t see your comment until now!! That’s a good point about number of listings… I wish Etsy tracked how much you’ve listed/removed but all I can see is the total active listings! I am around 300 at this point. I added 3 per day nearly every day for my first 3 months, now I am at 1 per day but I think I might try to ramp back up to 3 per day to keep the momentum going. I’ve removed maybe a dozen listings so far? I think listing just 1 on the first day is great! I think I actually did just 1 a day for the first couple of days but then by the end of the week I was up to 3 a day. Building up 10 listings at the beginning is great because you have a backlog of items you can list now and then you’re not scrambling every day to create listings from scratch!

Hi, I watched your video and started new ads and the first sale appeared after 30 minutes! My shop is new (3 weeks) I tried Etsy ads with a budget of $1-$2 I had 2 sales and turned them off. Today I set a budget of $10 and I hope it will increase the traffic to the store, even if the cost equals the revenue I think it's a good move. Thanks for this inspiration and congratulations on the results!

HI! That's great! Yep as long as you are driving ad money to listings that have already sold, I think you are good. Eventually I will make a video in depth about my ads and how I make decisions around that, but keep a close eye on your ROAs for your advertised listings. Eventually you will notice some items will suck up the ad budget and hardly sell, then eventually you will want to toggle off ads for that item. Also you can go into your ads and toggle off keywords that have nothing to do with your listing so you can better refine the ads

I have an Etsy shop that's 2.5 years old but I've never tried ads because I heard they aren't worth it. May be I should give it a try. Although I'm convinced running ads is so much easier when you sell a digital product; you have no product costs and you spend the same amount of time making your products whether you sell 10 or 1000. My profit margin is 35% so I don't think I'll make any money from ads but maybe the indirect benefits are worth it.
@whatshaesells
@whatshaesells Год назад
You could start by just running ads to your top products and see how it goes. Sometimes ads are harder on digital products because the price is so low. I don't run ads on any listing that's priced below like $5-$7 for this reason. So I definitely thikk it could be worth it if you have a higher priced product!
@financialchimes4546
@financialchimes4546 Год назад
@@whatshaesells Etsy uses a bidding system to determine which ads get shown. Your bid is based on the chance of converting for those keywords multiplied by the price of your item (the costs of Etsy fees are deducted from the price of your item as well, if I remember correctly). This means that on average the maximum bid will equal the revenue minus Etsy fees you're expected to make from the ad each time. You won't spend the maximum bid every time so theoretically you're able to make money from ads if the other maximum bids are lower than yours. But this means that for physical products were you also have product costs you'll certainly lose money from ads and it's only really possible to make profit from Etsy ads if you sell digital downloads or have huge profit margins. You can also see this in your ads results. You're making about as much from ads as you're spending on ads. This is also reflected in Hannah Gardner video since she says you should run as much ads as possible up to the point where you become no longer profitable. Or in other words, when you sell physical products the Etsy ads are losing you money and it's the profit you get from organic traffic that means you should overall be slightly profitable. This is a strategy that works for digital products or POD or if you have your products made in a factory. But if you actually handmake your products yourself this strategy is not viable since you'll spend so much time handmaking products for almost no profit. Note that Hannah doesn't handmake the products herself but has them manufactured for her, so I get that this strategy works for her but for handmade sellers this isn't a viable strategy.

Thanks for your insights! I've watched Hannah's video about the Etsy ads too, but not following it. I'm afraid to increase my ad budget. I'm also advertising my new listings to get them some traction. I guess I need to try out this approach because my monthly revenue is constant at $500-$600 for 2 months, and it's my 5th month now on Etsy. I want to achieve $1k per month too.
@whatshaesells
@whatshaesells Год назад
Hi! The great thing is you have so much data already about what's selling and what's not selling. What you could do if you are hesitant to raise ad spend, is to cut back dramatically on what items are on ads. So just spend on your top performers and try it out for a few weeks or a month and see if your revenue starts to grow! Then you can increase your budget from there. I basically do my 15 top performers and then I do a few new listings that I think will do well. I don't do every new listing (I am listing so many that this dilutes my ad spend too much). Then once a listing starts performing organically, I will add it to ads

Hi! Good question. I list the same exact product but I test out 3 different first photo variations. So it doesn't really look like another product since it's the same product, but the first photo varies slightly. Like I might try a different mockup or styles of first listing photo. For instance if I was selling a bundle of Instagram post templates, I might try a first listing photo with the posts mocked up on a phone, and another listing with the first listing photo with the post templates not mocked up on a phone and just displayed. Do you have to answer a lot of emails from people who order from you, with questions such as how to access their download link, how to use their digital item, etc.? Do you have any rough stats on how many orders typically results in you having to answer a customer email/provide customer service? My concern with this business is that it could result in having to invest large amounts of time answering a lot of customer emails. Thank you :) It depends on the item. It's all over the place. I still have some items with ZERO views which is just wild! But usually if it's a good item that's going to end up selling pretty well, it will start getting views in the first couple of days (sometimes just 1-3 views a day), and then grow from there as it gets more views, favorites, and sales. Sometimes though, an item will be completely quiet for a week or two and then start getting traction. Oh are you talking about Hannah's vid? She does allude to that but at the same time she says to not run ads at all on listings that aren't optimized. My personal opinion is that as a beginner, you don't necessarily fully know how to "optimize" listings and a bit is trial and error. So my opinion is to get organic sales/favorites from listings and THEN advertise. But then use Hannah's strategy with pulling the ones that don't do as well. I would not advertise everything just for the sake of testing it... it will dilute the ad spend way too much when you are listing so many items like myself! If you have physical products and less listings, definitely a different story.

Hi! So glad my videos have helped :) No you cannot do that legally, unless you have the rights to do so or it is open source/expired copyright. Some older things are open source, so it's worth doing research and checking! Etsy does eventually crack down on shops with copyright issues. Hi Shae! Loving these videos, I also started an Etsy store this year. I wanted to ask (and sorry if you’ve mentioned in another video before) but did you quit your job to do this? Was there a “screw it” moment where you wanted to go full in on this? Im currently working a full time job and it’s very hard to upload consistent listings, I’m getting sales and could possibly take this full time to go hard on it but obviously there’s a risk. What’s your personal experience with this, are you currently working and have a back up or are you just living off savings now and going hard on the Etsy store knowing you’ll eventually make a full income? Thanks so much x
@whatshaesells
@whatshaesells Год назад
Hey!! So I’m fortunate in that my full time job is actually another online biz (eBay store selling physical products) so it’s flexible enough that I can still do that and the Etsy. I will admit there were many days where I am working basically until I fall asleep at night 😬 but I am finally figuring out a work/life balance and actually putting in slightly less time into Etsy each day just because I feel so burnt out otherwise. I did have a “screw it” moment a couple years ago when I quit my 9-5 and went full time with my eBay biz. I was only making about $3000/mo from ebay at the time but I knew that it was super scalable and that I wouldn’t be able to scale without quitting my job. Also I did have a lot of savings so I knew I could survive while I was building up the income! So I totally can understand what you are feeling!! My advice is to make sure you are in a good savings position (like 6-12 months of living expenses in savings), and maybe give Etsy a few more months so you can confirm the consistency of the income. I also am a big fan of having multiple streams of income, you could even transition into a more flexible job that would allow you to spend more time on Etsy as you grow your shop. I’m so excited for you, keep me posted on how things go!!

Hi! Yes seasonality might have something to do with it. My first probably 20 sales back in January were mostly for the same product (that product doesn't even hardly sell at all now which is weird).
