Greetings and welcome to another installment in the series called TACKY TABLETS, a series in which I test various tablets and see if they are good or rather tacky and in this one I have a...thing?
I got a few of these at E-Waste for $10 each and half of them were locked down but some weren't and I was moving some stuff around the other day and decided to try them again and went "you know what, this deserves a review" and here we are.
It is hard to call this a tablet but it is rather a "kiosk" thing. But it's tablet in the sense that it looks like one. Just agree with me.
But how does it perform for $10? Well get yourself a drink and snack and listen to me waffle on about this thing for 45 minutes and show you all exactly what Rocky can do!

looks like it was probably used outside a meeting room. Showing room booking details etc. Red when room is in a booked state, Green when free. The off timer will be to turn off the display in office closed hours.

I second this! I have a similar device (made by a company called Visix) that is actually meant to mount inside of the wall. Just like this device, it also has RGB LEDs and the ability to be powered through the ethernet port using Power-over-Ethernet. My Visix device, however, uses a generic x86 single-board computer, so I just have Linux installed on it. I have it mounted in my hallway and use it to control my Home Assistant setup.

My guess was either this or if it was used for POS/order kiosks, the light ring would be used as a status indicator (i.e. green when open and ready for next in line, red if an attendant is needed)

That transformer module is for Power over Ethernet (PoE). Right where it connects to the motherboard you can see written "POE_IN" and "POE_OUT". For such an embedded device it would make sense. Many of these networked touch screens are used in conference rooms and having them powered and connected to the network over a single cable makes installation much simpler, since you don't need a mains run to the device. Others are saying that it's either a switching mode power supply to convert the input 12V to what the mainboard uses and others are saying it's the LED driver board. Both are wrong, since both of those low voltage circuits don't generally use such big transformers. Most of them use small surface mounted transformers.

ive already done something similar with a cheap android tablet. they also make flush wall mount kits for google hub max and echo show, i may do this down the road when my 50 dollar onn tablet dies

I've found it at Aliexpress, same exact specs, but claiming to have NFC, for £243. Was hoping for sub £100 because it would be perfect for Homeassistant. They sell it as a meeting room display.

I'd probably use it as a smart home dash. Link it up to home assistant or just have all my smart app widgets on the screen. You could control all the house lights, answer the doorbell camera and watch people break into the garden shed on the security cams. It would have to have tap to wake and be able to dim the RGB though.

Congrats mate, You definitely deserve 100K and well over! As far as the giveaway goes i think it's a good idea to do it but I'm not sure if everybody would enjoy such a tablet without a battery, there isn't really much of a market for these as far as your everyday person is concerned unless you want to use it like a Google home thing in your kitchen etc But again maybe i am wrong Anyway enjoy your break, can't wait for you to be back!

Wow, something like that might actually be useful as my nightstand security camera monitor/google voice phone, with the added benefit of doing a few other things in between like RU-vid and some games. It'd just need to be tethered to an outlet, but I think it might actually be possible to install a battery in that, if not powered via the DC input by a battery pack and boost converter. There's so much room in the interior that I totally think it could be done and made fully portable.

Hey there again bud! Just binging your vids with a couple of mates. A quickie tiny request/tip that you will already know about but as it's the perfect and usually preferred way to truly gauge how a device handles streaming content, please consider having the stats for nerds running during a YT vid (even if it's for like 15 seconds) to check for performance/amount of dropped frames esp when you're testing 4k/1090p. Right, I've had this thing paused for way too long and the audience is getting a little twitchy :P (funny that though as 2 of them were the ones that asked me to type this out! It was my idea first though ffs)... One more thing, when you attempted to launch Ark and it strained, stuttered and then failed, a couple of us noticed @ 29:29 that GTA SA was still running in background and using system resources. This may or may not contributed to the Ark fail, but always best to kill all apps (especially the chonky ones) or reboot a device to give it a fair chance/test (we're all geeky techies and love these funky devices like you too btw) :). I know this is kinda obvious advice and I didn't mean to be condescending but when reviewing tech like this and content creating, many of us has been there when watching a completed and uploaded vid and we kick ourselves later on wishing we did some obvious things that we should have (so you may possibly have also noticed GTA running yourself by now too) :P. Those things are surprisingly good, would not have assumed it could have done some decent emulation like that. I could easily see it used for some home assistant or a little gaming device for a kid to mess around with. $10 couldn't really get you anything much better, even if it's a thing you can really take on the go LMAO

I rather like this " tacky" tablet. I totally was thinking of using it as android auto. If I could purchase something like this that has been repurposed I would defo think uite seriously about it. Currently just using either phone or Amazon tablet through aux in car stereo system. ❤ Enjoy your holiday. I'm off to beautiful Scotland myself at the end of the month. That is a total score. I would load a security camra app and link it into WiFi cameras. I'm currently using my phone for that purpose. It's meant to be powered up non-stop so it would be perfect for use as a surveillance monitor.

I actually used one like this in 2019 for a school project,we were making a assistant (something like Alexa at home) which was supposed to work on a separate network, I me and my friends bought on like this from Ali express for around 20 usd (includes tax and shipping) it had 2 gb ram and ran android 9 and it was pretty decent for this, I don't remember the processor but our project out pretty good, we used ethernet and USB to create a smart home like system, which made us win 2nd place.

Hi Smoorez! (I'm getting myself some s'mores while watching this, yezz it's good) I think you definitely should do teardown and/or in depth review on some realme devices, and I'd say you could definitely do anything from realme C1 to realme 5i. These things are from 2018-2019, old enough, and deff cheapo for you to check them out :) May not be Welcome devices, but it'd be extremely interesting to work with older BBK phones (the company that manufactures oppo, vivo, OnePlus, realme, and more) and see if there are any dodgy/even more interesting stuff. That's not a tablet but a booking panel, it's not intended to have a battery because it's supposed to take energy from the POE on the Ethernet port. It's meant to be used with the original launcher so you have integration with specific apps that set-up usage on meeting rooms such as EMS or Appspace. Some of them allow you to use other apps and install 3rd party apps but most of them are quite restricted. The RGB lights are supposed to be paired with the room status, to signify if the room is free or reserved.

Would be great for my spotify stand alone player project as its display and control interface. Plenty of space inside to host a raspberry pi and a dac. The RGB lights can also be made to follow the music. Ps. That brown board with the high voltage transformer is for lcd backlight power because this display uses a rather old backlight system that requires some hundreds volts up to kvolts to operate depending on the device.

actual mcdonalds workers here: the kiosks and the POS systems all run on windows embedded. I know this because I helped install the OS back to them when they got messed up from a power surge. Fried some of the drives in the RAID array so we had to replace the ENTIRE server in the office
