Well, our broken Cessna 210 is now fixed! What was the problem? What was the fix? How much did the repair cost? It is a major issue that is so simple to fix. We fly the plane for the first time since the repair and head to Monterey for car week! We feature the Quail 2023 car show toward the end of this video. This simple little $2 part nearly caused our engine to blow up and would have caused an emergency if in the air. If you have a spin on oil filter adapter be sure to inspect it and possible swap to the ST07 gasket.

Might suggest next time you have a post maintenance flight after a near catastrophic failure that you orbit above the airport for 30-45 min (in case there is another failure), and then land, decowl, and re-inspect.
@JRAviation

We will sometimes do that, but in this case we just took off normally knowing we had two good airports in the immediate forward gliding range if something went wrong.

@@JRAviationwith the utmost respect, I urge you in the strongest possible terms to reassess the judgment that allowed you to make this decision. Please at least seek the input of some very experienced pilots who have seen in flight emergencies before, not the young guys you have working for you.

As an A&P for 30 years the most dangerous flight you will ever make is the one right after maintenance. Bad things happen after time spent in the shop and even the best mechanic can screw up. I did a maintenance flight on my own aircraft after a panel upgrade and a fuel system overhaul. took off and everything was great no issues so I flew over the town to wing wag at my parents house and the engine quit stone cold with no warning. did the engine failure checks and nothing. I was trying to find a field or road to set down on when I went through the checks one more time only this time switching the fuel selector to off first and the engine came back to life. Found out I had put the selector 180 degrees out. I never ever left the pattern on a maintenance flight again.

Thanks for the info about the copper washers, because this is what we installed to Correct the AD. The original failure happened to me midair on maintenance flight above the airport for a separate issue. We dumped 6 qts on 10 min flight around the pattern and was notified by people on the ground that we were trailing smoke which gave a few minutes advance notice before the oil pressure died.

Honestly I'm just plain shocked that you didn't learn anything from a near engine failure. You seriously head out on a long cross country immediately after this incident and repair? And not only that, but you're in a rush and trying to get somewhere on a tight timeline. I just can't believe it. You're running a company and you are responsible for the safety of your people. Even if they are contractors and are PIC and are legally responsible for the safety of the flight. It's time to grow up and start acting like the leader of an organization that holds people's lives in the balance. I too ran a company at a young age, so I understand there's a learning curve, but honestly you just have to do better. The vast majority of people will defer to you as the leader on safety decisions. There are very few people who will refuse to do something obviously unsafe. It's weird but true. I've seen it many times and was the only person saying "hey guys let's not do this".

A lot of people who don’t aren’t certified pilots would probably agree, however most pilots are not usually hesitant to fly in an aircraft after a maintenance issue especially if maintenance has resolved the issue and signed off on it. There are very rigorous standards that aircraft have to meet to be considered airworthy and maintenance will usually run the engine through rpm and prop cycles to ensure they have properly solved the issue prior to releasing it. There were 8 airports within 15-20 miles of their departure airport they could use for a suitable landing in the event of additional engine roughness. Although I can’t say everything he did was the best decision, I don’t necessarily disagree with his go decision for the flight. There is a huge chance you have been on an aircraft which has had a major repair in its lifetime and you’ve most likely not been aware of it.
@danielreuter2565
@danielreuter2565 9 месяцев назад
@@rileysmith6113 if you knew much about maintenance induced failures in general aviation, I doubt you would say this. A huge portion of engine failures are immediately preceded by maintenance. If they had at least performed an acceptance flight prior to the cross country, and taken time to verify that the leak had stopped, I would not feel so strongly that this was a reckless thing to do. Without the acceptance flight, this is just careless. It's also a very bad example for the audience, many of whom probably would like to emulate their business success.

Yes and it all started with the Pebble Beach Race and Concours back in about 1950. I was lucky enough to have met Phil Hill about 20 years ago at a WAJ track day at Laguna Seca. My first Pebble Concours was back in 1984 which I found by "accident" and I've been going ever since. In 1984 you could get a motel room in Carmel on the Friday of the event for $20. My number 2 son has never missed a Pebble Concours and "now" Monterey Car week since birth. That's right his first Pebble was in 1993 at age two months!!! He has been going ever since. He has taken over my published automotive column the Road Beat which allowed me to have some incredible automotive and motorcycle experiences. In that time I have been lucky to have driven and owned some fabulous cars, trucks and motorcycles and meet and interview some significant people. My favorite event is the Monterey Historic Races. And yes, my mode of transportation to get to Monterey is by the plane I owned at the time, Either a Cessna T210, Beech Baron 58TC and V35B. But I flew into MRY not Palo Alto (PAO) although I used to fly my Baron into PAO many times. If you think its short for a 210, try it in a Baron 58TC. Although with a stabilized approach and good airspeeds, it is actually a piece of cake and plenty of runway. I am also lucky to have experience thousand of laps at Laguna Seca and other race tracks mostly in the Western U.S. in and on many fabulous cars and motorcycles.

Nice to have it fixed easily and cheap! Unless the change of gaskets requires a test flight, the almost engine failure makes no difference for a test flight or not. As with all aircraft, both single- and multi-engined, a single engine failure is something to always consider, it just has different consequences where and when it happens.

2:25 I use arch oil for my diesel truck, about the first truck I used to for and I found that it's been a great additive to use. You might find a lot of car collectors use it because hold up to harsh conditions, ie intermittent use which would be considered extreme duty when it comes to combustion engines. Something to pass on to the younger generation when it comes to duty wear on our transportation. Not just cars and trucks. There are people who own trains just like airplanes and they too need care. ☺️

Very informative. Seems strange to have so much trouble sealing an oil filter. You have 50 cars and I bet none of them dump oil out the filter. I have never had a filter leak in 50 years. Planes should be just a little more reliable and yet this company is killing people with a leaky seal. Unbelievable.

It’s not the oil filter that was leaking. It’s the oil filter ADAPTER that is leaking where it mounts to the oil pump on the engine case. Many of these engines never had a full flow, screw-on oil filter. Instead, a simple coarse screen was all that between the sump and oil pump gears. This product that is the subject of the AD was a solution to allow people to use oil filters on their Continental engines. The problem was this fiber gasket between the adapter and the engine case. This most recent solution of replacing the lower gasket with the Teflon (PTFE)-stainless steel washer should be the permeant fix these owners need. This explains what the issue is: aeroaccessories.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Stratus-SB-001_Rev-C.pdf

That's a layered stainless steel with Delrin that is infused with Teflon. Stainless steel is for structural integrity. The Delran is for a crushable element probably somewhere in the vicinity of about 20 to 25 ft lb of applied force. And the Teflon is to keep it heat resistant. I would have thought that the copper would have worked however when I see those copper crushable gaskets, they are not an ideal design. They should be flattened with more contact surface, and the surface should be ridged so as to create a seal much like the banjo bolt on a caliper on your car that has copper gaskets that work wonderfully.

@Stepclimb
@Stepclimb 9 месяцев назад
That sounds like a terrible idea. Deviation from the instructions found in the AD and the Service Bulletin the AD references would mean deliberate non compliance. Torque values for the fasteners are very carefully calculated to provide adequate preload and clamping forces on the gaskets. These torque values are based on using engine oil and only engine oil on the threads and surfaces called for. The new lower gasket here is stainless steel with an impregnated, Teflon (PTFE) surface. It’s friction characteristics have already been considered when the torque values were calculated. When you add another lubricant to a surface not designed for it, the torque applied to the fastener will often over-compress the gasket(s), causing them to leak or fail. Again, please do not encourage or advocate for maintenance providers to deviate from specific instructions found in maintenance documents, especially those referenced in an AD.

Fun to watch but I’m not really into cars. I’m an airplane guy. Fun to watch though.

It’s a bad design, just remove the aftermarket oil adapter and go back to factory stock. 😊

Why would you load a problematic plane with 3 souls for testing out the effectiveness of a repair? Not smart.

Its going to leak again. You should re torque that adapter after a few hours of flying. Or just take it off and put a screen back in it. That adapter is terrible design

Tempest now says not to re-torque after five hours according to my research.

Love the overall Click Bait. That’s how we monetize. So great work. But do you like aviation.??Do you even understand CAM Guard ? Do the guys who make the motor say yes to CAM Guard? What about the oil? If you like GA…sometimes I wonder. GA is not healthy. Promote GA. Buying a/c in stupid mode does not do that. Then complaining about the costs. My guess is that you are not stupid. But act like it for your viewers because it gets views ….LIKE ME. And helps you be a star. But there are a number of Tubers of late who wanted to be stars and are now not around. Use caution and keep the entertainment coming.
