The Biggest issue I have with Tenkara sales is that the way the rods are rated for castability. The 8/2 for me is better than a 7/3 the Tenkara rod loading is different best the ROD does the work NOT A FLY LINE. Good Video and thanks. NOTE: These rods are used to catch CARP which are heavy strong pulling fish. When we trout Tenakara rod fish, we just snatch little fish out of the water. These rods are more than sufficient for fish up to 3 lbs. Most of us are overly influenced by sales hype, I was catching fish on cheap traditional style fly rods and reels and the other fishermen on the stream catching nothing with a thousand dollar rod reel, waders, set up. Learn to fish that is the only thing, just go fishing.

Awesome review. That Goture rod was my first of its kind some time ago. And, you’re right, it’s an okay budget-starter rod. That said, there’s a Tenkara-style fishing experience for everyone.

lol! I've tried the cheapos as well. I agree with your assessment! I am always amazed at those who would use traditional fly gear on small streams like this. Nothing better than tenkara when you are only casting a few feet!

It's interesting how we get spoiled with fishing gear. Some of the biggest fish I've caught is through the ice on hand lines. There's nothing more thrilling than playing a large fish by hand. To me that's as real as it gets. I get you though. A high quality rod feels so good, like a living extension of your self. 🌲🌲🌲

Guess I have not left start when it comes to Goture rod. It has not failed, the tip has not broken and I catch fish. Action strange at first but that is true with any new rod.

This rod is for the “micro fishing” crowd in Japan. Not made for casting Kebari, used with very small hooks and baits.

I have a few higher end tenkara rods and before I got them I bought a ten dollar el cheapo Amazon rod. I caught several trout with it. Yes not as good but yes it will catch fish. But I have also caught trout with a cut branch and a fly.

I wanna start off with saying thanks for all your consistent, great content! I've followed you for awhile now and get excited to view each upload. Love the review, and I thank you for it. I enjoy exploring all styles of fishing and trying out a tenkara rod has been at the top of the list for some time. I have been wanting to fish some pretty small streams along the Wasatch front, and I think tenkara is the perfect fit for it. I've been planning on buying a rod for years, but for unclear reasons I put it on the backburner. As soon as I saw this review(and knowing your experience), I knew it was to good of a offer to let it pass up. For the price($11 on ali express after using a coupon) and knowing it's not completely terrible, I'll be using it more as a tool to get me to finally try it out and that should mentally get me more into it. Thank you for looking at a cheap model. I want to start with this style due to ending up in smaller streams often. I don’t want to go dirt cheap but cannot justify higher end just yet. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing the color and style of flys that you use. Randy

Great video Tristan! I've also purchased a handful of Chinese cheapo's. There still fun and as u said perfect for kids or throwing in the glove box, but nothing compared to a sensitive full graphite name brand tenkara rod. Happy new year and thank you for sharing! Steve at Black Fly

For me I go out with this rod just to see if I even want to do this kind of fishing. If I enjoy this style of fishing and I probably would, I would not feel bad about retiring this and just give it to some kid to try. Then I crank it up to a better rod. I will go this rout and give this style fishing a go and this is the rout im going to go.

I have a similar geocher rod. A ten foot one. I would say it is good for a cheap throw away for a beginner who wants to start in the hobby.

i have caught 20 inch rainbows on the goture redfox i had the 24ft and the 12ft both were ok but easy to break on large fish. thanks for doing what you do if you look at my channel go back to when i started doing tenkara/keiryu videos big fish all over

Hello Tristan, I own some cheap "Tenkara" rods and some of them are not bad at all. My 4 rods from Goture also make a good impression on me. Of course these are not real tenkara rods, but they are not that much worse than various branded rods. FYI - It's about $25 now on Amazon, but I found it for under $10 on the Temu app a few days after receiving the one I ordered from Amazon. So far it's fine, I have 3 of the cheap ones, but have a Dragontail on the way.

I bought a $20 goture rod off Amazon and it broke in 2 places the second fishing trip I used it. I won't buy another, its true you get what you pay for.

I think you’re quite right about these low cost rods: they represent an acceptable and workable starting point. But you can learn the basics of tenkara casting (getting the fly to land first!) with these, and that’s a real plus. Oh, and once again, you found a totally neat stream! Thanks for sharing!

caught a 16 inch brown bullhead in florida off one of these with a san juan worm and four pound mono and held up fine

We use those for shrimping.

Interestingly, these rods have a bit of a cult following among amateur radio operators! Their lightness and portability are good for elevating simple wire antennas in the field.

I have premium rods and use these cheapy ones as sacrificial rods. I have landed a massive channel cat with one but the sections got stuck and I had to walk backwards and beach the fish to land it

It's much more like a Keiryu rod rather than a Tenkara. Either way both are very viable ways to fish.

I ordered it on ali express but i hot scammed... After i paid fo the product they asked me 12$ more for this product as sayin shipin charge... They say give the payment or cancel it like it was so easy fo them... Coz of bank comission policy i already paid more if i add a our bank card comiision policy & from deller i got that.... A Bad experience fo me .. so bad 😔😒😔

Do you ever have an Urge to Build your own ultimate Rod? I am going to build my own to start and then see what the high end rods are about. Have built rods since I was 10 .

I have three Goture rods -- two Red Foxes, one something else. I got them for largemouth fishing from a pontoon boat. I would just as soon not break a good rod fooling around with bass. The 18 footer is pretty damn heavy after a while. 15 and 12 foot versions are fine for the purpose. This is not subtle fishing. I also recommended the Red Fox 12 foot for some friends whose young boys wanted to try. One lost interest but the other took to it immediately, and I have allowed him to try some other rods, fixed-line and Western fly. I wouldn't recommend these as an initial fixed-line experience for an adult. That honor I would give to a slightly more expensive but decidedly more "Tenkara"-ish rod like those from Maxcatch. But if you're looking for a beater, a loaner, something for bass, something you can tie two Wooly Buggers and a piece of split shot and not care...these things are pretty good.

Thanks for the excellent review. Question. For me to experience "tenkara" i have 'converted' a standard good quality 9' TKO 5 wt fly rod to a fixed line/reel-less system, by attaching a standard floating fly line to the last guide in the tip section, then four or so feet of tippet to give me about a 20' casting range. It seems to work, but would this $20 Goture rod give me a better sense of the tenkara experience?

Looks like a keiryu style fishing rod

those are Chinese rough fishing rod for perch, carp, crappie and like. normally used for float fishing. the Japanese also use them for esa-tsuri (bait fishing with worm for trout and small sea fish) with line markers. i have personally caught more than 300fish with rods like this. everything from double hooking 2lbs perch to 5pound pike and sm bass. here is a guy that caught a 3pound pike with one of those rods: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zv8lnN2e_Bs.html

You do realize a large portion of Amazon reviews are fake, right? You can literally tell when they are ridiculously over praising a product just like the review you referenced. We all know that even the highest quality $19 rod cannot be made to the quality of a $120+ rod. I mean think about that review, they basically said that rod did everything including paying your mortgage for you lol. Only a foreign bot farm writes a fake review like that brudda
